6. Languages and Ethnic group Sub-Saharan Africa displays more diversity than anywhere in the world. The region speaks 1000 languages, which is 1/6 of the world's total. The distribution of the Afro-Asiatic languages within Africa is principally concentrated in North Africa and Horn of Africa.

Religion In terms of religion, North Africa is mostly Muslim (shown in green), while Sub-Saharan Africa, with the exception of the Horn of Africa,Sudan, the Swahili coast, and the Sahel, is mostly Christian (shown in red). Throughout much of the continent, there are also traditional African religions.

States and Markets Three of the top ten reformers in business in 2007-2008 are Sub-Saharan countries Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Botswana Mauritius, the Sub-Saharan African country with the most favourable business regulations, is among the top 25 countries as measured by the doing Business “ease of doing business” measure.
