Charles M. Duke Jr. was an astronaut who was born in 1935 in Charlotte, North Carolina and grew up interested in the air force. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and had a career as an astronaut for 13 years, including training for and participating in the Apollo 16 mission to the moon. Charles Duke passed away at the age of 76 after having a distinguished career as a NASA astronaut.
