Summary • The year of Jubilee was every 49 years probably following a sabbatical year • It was a year for men to return to their lands and servants to their families • It taught the Israelites: – Not to oppress their brethren – That the land they occupied was God’s – That they were God’s – strangers and pilgrims – and that future inheritance was a matter of hope when the promises to the fathers would be fulfilled

- These two tables show the offset between sacred and civil years. There are, however, one or two problems – at least so it seems to me. This shows the jubilee as being in the 50th sacred year – problem - trumpets in 7th month sacred year – Lev 25:9. This idea shows jubilee beginning in 1st month sacred year. Possible solution – trumpets blown in middle of year. However, seems unlikely as trumpet declared jubilee and freedom for slaves and people return to possessions – could not do this until middle of year if this suggestion is correct. Other problem is its overlap with 50th civil year and sowing of crops – Lev 25:22. Crops would need to be sown very late to avoid sowing during jubilee as this would end halfway through civil and well after crops should have been planted. One thing this idea does do is take account of the 50th year mentioned in v10-2. As I said I would be interested to hear any comments about this suggestion.

- V9 – trumpet = rams horn – shophar. Jubilee usually yobel – strong 3104 – means rams horn. Here it comes from “teruwah” meaning clamour and can refer to an acclamation of joy or a battle cry. Usually blown in 1st day of 7th month – Num 29:1-2. Trumpet here same orig. as in Lev 25:9. Special arrangement once every 49 years for it to be blown on the 10th day. - So, my dear bre and sis, we, as the Israel of God look forward with great anticipation to the time when these things shall come to the earth. We have been drawn to the Truth - we do understand the word of God – we know that we have no continuing city but seek one to come. Now there awaits us a marvellous promise – release from the burden of mortal sinful flesh – that glorious day of liberty.
