Lesson 6 of 11 on the Ten Commandments. This sermon on the fifth commandment was presented August 21, 2011, at Palm Desert Church of Christ, by Dale Wells.
4. 5th Command is 1st Rule of Justice Exodus 20:12 NIV Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 16:20 NIV Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the LORD your God is giving you.
6. Amos 2:6-7 NIV This is what the LORD says: "For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. They sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name.
7. Micah 6:6-8 NIV With what shall I come before the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8. Micah 6:6-8 NIV He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
14. Deuteronomy 21:18-21 NIV If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard."
15. Deuteronomy 21:18-21 NIV Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
18. Psalms 78:5-7 NIV He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
19. We honor our parents when we heed their instruction
20. Colossians 3:20-21 NIV Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
21. Ephesians 6:1-4 NIV Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise-- "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
23. 1 Timothy 5:3-4 NIV Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.
24. Proverbs 19:26 NIV He who robs his father and drives out his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace.
25. Mark 7:9-13 NIV And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'
26. Mark 7:9-13 NIV But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."
28. Deuteronomy 6:4-7 NIV Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Much talk today about child abuse. It is rampant. It is tragic.Equally tragic, but not talked about as much, is elder abuse. This year, 8 million parents will be abused physically.18% of children will physically assault their parents.Abuse physical, mental, economic.Culture dishonors age & idolizes youth.Message: No Country for Old Folks, stay young. When old, society thinks you have nothing to say or contribute. Force you to retire & barely pay you enough to live.
Breakdown of the ten commandments.First four deal with our responsibility to GodLast five deal with our responsibility to our fellow-manFifth command is pivotal. How we treat our parents reflects how we honor God and how we treat our fellow-man.
The ten commands are not the oldest code of law, but they are the most revolutionary of ancient laws.Older codes put land at the center. Capital punishment inflicted on those who committed crimes against property.Ten commands put people at the center.
Fifth command (Exo 20:12) sounds like Deu 16:20. Both end with a promise of long life in the land. Honor father & mother is the first rule of justice.
God's judgment on injustice is a theme of the prophets, because God's imperative is justice.
God started justice in the home. Your father and mother must have justice.
Heb. term for "honor" means “give weight to".Parents have a right to respect from their children.Respect is not something they earn. They are entitled to it.Bible never says parents must earn respect. We honor athletes, politicians, public figures, etc., for what they've done. They've earned our respect. Not so with our parents. They are entitled to our respect without having to earn it.
Blood. A scoundrel can be a parent. The Bible doesn't say we respect our parents because they brought us into the world.
Maturity.Parents ought to be more mature than children. Some are more mature than others. That is not a biblical reason for respect.
Gratitude. Children ought to be grateful, but that is not a biblical reason for respect. Some parents can give more than others, but they are not worthy of more respect.
The Biblical reason for respect is that the parents have the role of propagating faith.God's design is for children to respect their parents. If we do not, then we show no respect for God's design. This is not a private, but a social matter. Parents are easily offended by anyone talking about their children.
This doesn't stop at age 18, 28, 38, 48, or even 58.No scripture commands us to love our parents, because love is natural. But the scriptures do command us to respect our parents. That is a moral choice.Children choose to respect their parents because they fill a God-given role - that of spokesmen for God, tellers of God's story, teachers of God's law.
Psalms 78:5-7 NBLH Porque El estableció un testimonio en Jacob, Y puso una ley en Israel, La cual ordenó a nuestros padres Que enseñaran a sus hijos, (6) Para que la generación venidera lo supiera, aun los hijos que habían de nacer, Y éstos se levantaran y lo contaran a sus hijos, (7) Para que ellos pusieran su confianza en Dios, Y no se olvidaran de las obras de Dios Sino que guardaran Sus mandamientos;
The family is the child's school of faith.Especially true today when the world does not allow teachers to teach matters of faith in public schools.Parents never should have abdicated their roles as teachers of faith to public entities, or even to the church, in the first place.
The family, not Washington DC, or Sacramento, or Riverside County, is God's institution to provide for human needs.Parents take care of children when they are young. Children take care of parents when they are old. Our disgrace is that we try to abdicate our responsibility to the state.
I cannot tell you how frequently I see children abusing their parents economically. There is no more holy ministry than devoting one's life to caring for his or her parents. When Jesus was questioned about the Sabbath tradition, he became livid at the way the Jews dishonored their parents and violated God's law.
Some of the younger generation do not honor their parents because their parents have not been honorable.Parents have stopped being teachers of God's law, and have thus dishonored God.Our society teaches us to raise our children in a moral & spiritual vacuum & let them make decisions of faith as adults. That is disastrous & unbiblical. The job of parents is to teach & initiate faith.
I learned faith from parents & grandparents. There was no question about whether we would attend church. We just did it.I helped my Dad study his sermons as far back as I can remember.Parents, we teach our children not only by word, but by example. Do they see us in study? In the assembly? In devotion? In prayer? If this is uncomfortable, take heart. I'm condemning myself as well as you.
Have those with living parents stand. Prayer: Help us honor our parents. Thanks for giving them as our teachers. Help them know every day that we love, respect & honor them. Help us as parents to raise our children to respect you, to be a blessing to society, and to pass on our faith to the next generation. If any here is not a child of God, help that person to respect you by being immersed into Christ today. Help each of us to heed the faith and live.
