                                              Modeling

Modeling allows for a mode of inquiry to be developed pertaining to the area in which it is being

used. By bringing together the logical, mathematical and physical characteristics that a

phenomenon possess, a model allows for an in-depth analysis which gives a birds-eye view of

the scenario and allows for the detection of sinks where resources are being over used or under

used. In general terms, a model presents the conceptual staging of a phenomenon that is already

present in real life. It is the conceptual reincarnation of an occurrence or a frequent series of

occurrences that exist in the real world. The most common example of a model is a map (Powell

& Baker, 2008). A map presents the very core of concepts that establish the foundations of

modeling. It allows for a quantitative representation of numerous qualitative aspects that exist in

the real world.

A model relevant to a scenario is designed by bringing empirical data pertaining to that scenario.

It is necessary for the data to be of a nature that allows the generation and observation of the data

to be repeated. If the model is found to be inconsistent with the data, it is mandatory that the

model is either redesigned or modified.

The manner adopted to design the model and the approach that is given to the foundation of the

model is more than often reliant upon the requirements of the end user. However, when

analyzing a model, it is necessary to understand that every model has a number of assumptions

that justify the validity of that model. Modeling can be used and is brought into use in almost all

developed areas of daily life. An example can be found in the US Postal Service that exercises
Modeling 3

numerous models to ensure efficiency in its operational framework. One of the most frequently

used of these models is the Transportation Model the US Postal Service uses in order to reduce

transportation costs (ILOG, 2008). This model has been generated by combining a number of

networks together and has been made possible by collaboration between USPS and IBM.

The reason because of which organizations are opting to developing and implementing models is

because a model allows for the establishment for better understanding of a system that would

otherwise enter into a spiral that would lead to an increase in the degree of complexity as time

goes by. It is for the same reason that more than one model alone is often used by organizations

to develop a better understanding of the interaction between the internal and external elements

that influence the functioning of the organization (Brooks, 2001).

Factors that hold relevance when a scientific model is being designed or studied include

simulation, structure and visualization. However, the numbers of types of models that are

brought into use in the modern day world of modeling are equivalent to the number of

applications that models are used for. It is for the same reason that models are used to study

phenomenon ranging from ecological to economical to behavioral. This also explains why

models are relatable to almost every platform that their area of application requires them to be

related to.

The platforms that are used to design and study models can range from mental to visual to

mathematical to spreadsheet. We can conclude from this brief analysis of models and their

relevance that models allow for a thorough understanding of the subject scenario to be developed

which in turn allows for the identification of problems and their eradication to increase

efficiency.
