Deployment in a Virtualized Environment VM1 C D C VM2 Service Console TSM FastBack Server ESX Server D E ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Can Also deploy TSM FastBack Server in a Virtual Machine Virtualization techniques like VMWare place extra burden upon individual applications and fileservers. These servers can ill-afford additional workloads introduced by backup. Block-level incremental addresses this by virtually eliminating the backup window and load on the CPU. This makes TSM FastBack a great solution for virtual system data protection in the General Business Market FastBack Client FastBack Client

Licensing Examples In this example, only the 3 protected servers would require a TSM FastBack license. The TSM FastBack Repository would be included in the pricing for the Three servers. Exchange SQL File & Print FastBack Repository & BMR TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange Protected Servers Branch Office
Licensing Examples (cont.) Adding in Disaster Recovery, the 3 protected servers would require a TSM FastBack license. The TSM FastBack Repository would also need a license. The DR-hub would not need a license. DR Site FastBack DR-hub Exchange SQL File & Print FastBack Repository & BMR TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange Protected Servers Branch Office
Licensing Examples (cont.) Single File & Print Server FastBack Repository & BMR TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange Protected Server Branch Office For best protection, a single file server in a branch office would be protected with a local TSM FastBack Repository With DR enabled back to a DR site. This price would then Reflect 2 protected servers; the file server & the TSM FastBack Server. DR Site Fastback DR-hub
Licensing Examples (cont.) Single File & Print Server FastBack Repository TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange Protected Server Branch Office However, some customers may feel the expense of the extra Server hardware is prohibitive. It is possible to run TSM FastBack on the existing server. This would then be priced with a Single server license. This would limit BMR capabilities at the Branch office site as there would be no TSM FastBack server to provide the backup snapshot. BMR could be done from the DR site. DR Site FastBack DR-hub
Pricing with Passport Advantage ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Product Price Metric TSM FastBack $55 Per 10 PVU TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange $35 Per 10 PVU TSM FastBack for Bare Machine Recovery $30 Per 10 PVU TSM FastBack Center $2880 Per Server (eight processor cores or less)

Business Impact of Xpress Restore and XRDR Optimal Performance = Huge $$$ Savings Comparisons between traditional tape backup and FastBack: Measurements taken by a real customer in their environment Description Tape FastBack Comments Backup File/Print Server 16 hours 3 minutes Increased frequency from 1/wk to 6/day Backup E-Mail Server 46 hours 2 minutes Increased frequency from 1/wk to 8/day Recover SQL Table/Record Impossible 5 minutes Recover Individual E-Mail Impossible 5 minutes Same for calendars, contacts, tasks, etc. Restore a File Server Volume 10-16 hrs. 6-10 min. Restore SQL Server Volume 20-30 hrs. 6-10 min.
Solving the Data Recovery Problem What can go wrong? Current response Response with Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Office staff forgets to run the backup, or does it wrong Pray nothing fails until the next night (or whenever the next backup gets run successfully) Automated, non-disruptive backup occurs during normal business hours in the background Accidental or malicious deletion of critical files Call tape vendor’s support desk and have them walk you through loading the right sequence of tapes, and hope you don’t over-write any of today’s data Open the FastBack Restore browser and drag & drop the needed files back to where you need them You discover that a critical database server has been corrupted (maybe by a virus) for the past couple of weeks Good luck; you’re going to need to fly in an expert, and you’ll be down for days Pick the point-in-time that you want to recover from and initiate a Virtual Restore operation; the entire database will be made available within seconds
Solving the Data Recovery Problem What can go wrong? Current response Response with Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Your boss has lost an important contact or message in his Microsoft Outlook e-mail and needs it now Tell the boss it can’t be done, and start looking for another job Initiate FastBack for Microsoft Exchange and drag-and-drop whatever e-mail objects you need or send them to a new mailbox The disk in your SQL Server crashes Tell customers to wait for a few hours or days while you try to restore from tape Virtual Restore will have you up and running within seconds of putting a new disk on-line The office is hit by a <insert your favorite disaster here> Restart operations from scratch whenever you can get into a (new) facility; suffer lost customers, revenue Use FastBack for Bare Machine Recovery to reconstitute the office’s workload in another location, within an hour

  • 29. Licensing Examples (cont.) Adding in Disaster Recovery, the 3 protected servers would require a TSM FastBack license. The TSM FastBack Repository would also need a license. • 30.

  1. In smaller and mid-sized companies, where there may not be significant staffing in IT support and there may be a lack of sophisticated data management processes, critical data may not be as well protected as it should be. Relying on non-IT people to perform backup and recovery operations can only lead to errors, and often results in proper backups not being done at all. The bottom line is that if the data doesn’t get backed up – correctly – it can’t be recovered when something goes wrong.
  2. Objective of Slide Outline how IBM can leverage its strength in TSM to participate in the emerging customer opportunities Speaking points TSM is strong today as a legacy backup tool for data center environments Moving upward to CDP is about providing a disruptive technology – e.g. disk-based, faster recovery times, business continuity by minimizing data loss, application awareness, etc. Moving Left to Right is about consolidating to a single enterprise-wide tool for DC and ROBOs and about Automating tasks in ROBOs that don’t have the skills or processes to execute a disciplined data governance strategy for the growing amount of data and regulations customers are facing FilesX extends the capabilities of TSM. FilesX enhances and simplifies the capabilities we now have and makes for an easier inroad to the Mid-Market.
  3. This could be thought of as a quick elevator value proposition. It’s designed to tell the quick hit values of FilesX in 15-30 seconds.
  4. Abstract: Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack introduces many new recovery capabilities to existing Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) customers running Microsoft Windows and Windows applications in the datacenter. This paper briefly describes specific ways in which TSM FastBack can solve business and operational problems in a customer’s existing Tivoli Storage Manager datacenter. Positioning TSM FastBack within the TSM datacenter Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack is the perfect standalone solution for protecting Windows servers in small to medium sized businesses. FastBack may also be sold effectively to existing TSM customers needing a superior recovery solution for remote offices. However, don’t overlook the opportunity to sell licenses of TSM FastBack to your existing TSM customer, for use in their datacenter. This is an excellent opportunity to “seed and grow” TSM FastBack into your TSM accounts to solve some of your customer’s more difficult recovery needs. When positioning Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack (FastBack) with existing Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) customers, it is important to remember that TSM will typically remain the primary backup and recovery solution for the datacenter. TSM has the broad platform support and superior scalability which makes it the solution of choice for hundreds or thousands of servers and terabytes or petabytes of data. Due to its block-level, progressive incremental design, TSM FastBack can supplement TSM in the datacenter in very significant ways. Listen carefully to your TSM customers as they describe their backup environment and the challenges they face. They may complain about inadequate performance when backing up Microsoft Windows servers, or the need for more granular application recovery options than are currently available with TSM. FastBack may provide the perfect solution for your customer’s business needs, while defending the TSM install base from competitive attack. Solutions for common recovery needs in the datacenter are described below. Large Microsoft Windows Filesystems As customers grow their MS Windows servers to millions and millions of files (in a single filesystem), traditional backup methods become cumbersome. Customers will often complain that backups of such filesystems (even with a progressive incremental product like TSM) often exceed the existing backup window. This is due to the enormous number of files which TSM must scan prior to the backup of changed files. Even if the amount of changed data is relatively small, TSM may be unable to complete the backup process in a timely manner, due to the sheer number of objects which must be processed. Recovery of these filesystems is equally challenging and time consuming. Most volume-level backups do not allow for file-level recovery, and recovery of all the individual files may take too long. TSM FastBack does not perform a filesystem scan as part of its backup operations. Therefore, FastBack may be used tactically on these Windows servers to provide block-level, incremental backup of these massive filesystems, while still allowing the administrator to perform file level recovery. The backup process will typically be performed in minutes (as opposed to hours with TSM), and the amount of data moved to the FastBack repository server will be even less than TSM’s file-level backup. On the recovery side, the story gets even better. Instant recovery (described below) allows the administrator to make the fileserver immediately available to the users, while allowing the data to be recovered in the background. And individual files may be recovered by mounting a snapshot of the filesystem, and dragging/dropping required files over to their recovery point. Customers may then protect the FastBack repository server by installing a TSM client on this machine, and periodically moving this data to the TSM server for longer-term archive and offsite storage. Microsoft SQL, Oracle, DB2 databases (and other applications) Many Windows-centric customers use Microsoft SQL, Oracle or IBM’s DB2 as the data repository for custom applications. While TSM for Databases provides adequate full and/or full + incremental backup and recovery of these applications, the size of these applications presents specific challenges to the backup administrator. First, it may be undesirable to perform incremental backups of the database, since the recovery path requires the administrator to restore the full backup first, and then restore the incrementals up to the desired recovery point. This process is tedious and lengthy. As a result, most administrators will perform nightly full backups of these databases. While having the advantage of a single-step backup and recovery, full database backups are sometimes impossible given the short backup windows available. In addition, full backups can consume an enormous amount of space on disk or tape… especially if at least 3 or 4 backups are regularly kept available for short-term recovery. Once again, TSM FastBack’s block-level design will eliminate the need to perform regular full backups, while providing full database recovery. In addition, and more importantly… customers (especially those performing nightly backups) are no longer limited to a recovery point of up to 24 hours ago. FastBack may be configured to capture block-level changes in MS SQL, Oracle or DB2 as often as the customer wishes: hourly, several times an hour or even continuously. The administrator retains the ability to perform a single-step restore, and may choose their recovery from any “point in time” available on the FastBack server. Combined with the Instant Restore feature, FastBack delivers superior recovery points (RPO) and recovery times (RTO). FastBack also enables the recovery of individual database objects directly from a mounted snapshot, whereas TSM for Databases must recover the entire database or volume. This technique may be extended to other applications such as Microsoft SharePoint, Lotus Domino, FileNet, etc. As in the previous example, the FastBack server repository is then protected by TSM for longer-term archive and storage of these database backups. Instant Restore in the TSM Datacenter The ability of TSM FastBack to mount a recovery snapshot directly from the repository server to a customer’s application or file server are well documented. This provides superior recovery time to a fileserver or application server, without having to wait for the physical recovery of the data to be completed. This software-based snapshot (while designed for somewhat smaller applications) represents a lower cost option than hardware-based solutions supported by TSM and competitors. For larger environments, TSM for Copy Services (in combination with TSM for Mail or TSM for Databases) is still the preferred solution where hardware copy services (i.e. IBM FlashCopy) are available. Instant Restore may be used with almost any application including databases, email, etc. Again, TSM datacenter customers wishing to have faster recovery of specific Windows servers may choose to deploy TSM FastBack tactically on these systems. Virtual Environments As customers continue to embrace virtual environments for their Windows operating systems (e.g. VMWare and Hiper-V), solutions are needed to enable the fast and granular recovery of these unique environments. TSM FastBack may be installed directly on each guest operating system, allowing for full protection of the filesystems and applications of these individual, virtual environments. By virtue of its block-level, incremental design, FastBack does not burden the host server with significant I/O or processor overhead… even if many of the guest operating systems were performing backups simultaneously on the same host. This is in stark contrast to traditional, file-level backup products, which must often rely on special integration with the host to coordinate the backup and recovery. In addition, when FastBack is combined with FastBack for Bare Machine Recovery, it may be used for system recovery in a variety of ways… either for the initial consolidation of systems (Physical to Virtual), the recovery of a host (Virtual to Virtual), or the unique recovery of a virtual guest back to a dedicated system (Virtual to Physical). The flexibility of FastBack in supporting virtual environments is unsurpassed. Development and Test FastBack can be a real time saver to customers who perform recoveries of databases or applications in order to run tests, perform queries or validate functions. FastBack also allows the database administrator to quickly recover from a data corruption issue, test multiple snapshots of a database, and make the production recovery faster while minimizing the amount of data lost. Item Level Recovery for Microsoft Exchange (and a word on Domino) TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange was the first product from Tivoli to assist the Exchange administrator with item-level recovery of mailboxes, folders, calendar entries, etc. TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange may be used directly with TSM FastBack to provide an integrated, single step recovery solution for Exchange email environments. This provides not only the granular recovery of any email object, but also allows for the “instant recovery” (as mentioned earlier) of the entire email application. TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange may also be purchased separately and used in combination with TSM for Mail as a two-step recovery process for just the email objects. For equivalent item level recovery of Lotus Domino, the base TSM FastBack product is capable of providing “drag and drop” function by simply mounting a snapshot containing the email database, and selecting the desired item to be recovered. How to get my customer started Propose five, ten or twenty licenses of TSM FastBack (including FastBack for MS Exchange or FastBack for Bare Machine Recovery, where appropriate) to your TSM datacenter customer… to be deployed tactically on specific Microsoft file and application servers. Work with your Technical Sales Specialist to determine how many FastBack repository servers (and storage) will be required for this solution. FastBack can either replace the existing TSM client license, or be used in conjunction with TSM. Customers displacing the TSM client license are free to redeploy the license “value units” on another supported server platform. Save one (or more) of these TSM client licenses for the new FastBack repository server(s), so that FastBack may send its data to TSM for long-term archive and retention. Let your customers get used to the tremendous function, value and integration which TSM FastBack provides, and watch them purchase and deploy additional future licenses in the datacenter and remote offices!
  5. Hyper-V has support for making VSS snapshots of live virtual machines that have support for VSS and a hibernate/snapshot process for the operating systems that don't like Linux. The Microsoft DPM and others like Symantec are really moving along with support for backup of the virtual environments at the Hyper-V level especially with its granular recovery. But, there are still a huge number of caveats working with backups in these environments however unfortunately our customers are quickly dazzled by one or two unique features and promises of a simplified backup. The common issue is that in order to get an application level granular recovery agents are required inside the VMs both for DPM and Symantec. TSM Fastback does have an advantage in that it is: single backup block level incremental (dazzle) with file-level and application granular recovery capability (dazzle), and instant recovery (and big dazzle). We just need to be aware that our customers are being dazzled and we need to get them to see past the big blobs in their eyes so they can see that we do have solutions are functionally equivalent without some of the caveats our competitors have to work around.
  6. TSM FastBack Center - a bundle of the 3 FastBack products, will licensed Per Server Pricing 40% discount off of the individual products if priced on a dual quad (8-core) machine Restrictions Limited to servers with eight processor cores or less
  7. Advanced Recovery for Microsoft Exchange® Using traditional backup technologies such as backup to tape can present big challenges when trying to protect and recover mission critical applications such as Microsoft Exchange. Recovering anything requires hours of sorting through backup tapes, loading them in the correct order, copying the data and then figuring out exactly what you're looking for. Most IT organizations reject requests to recover individual messages (depending on who's asking) due to the time and skill needed. FilesX TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange 2007 is a next generation solution to this problem. As an optional add-on to TSM FastBack(R), which provides non-disruptive block-based protection on a policy basis, or used as a stand-alone utility, TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange 2007 allows administrators and users to easily and quickly recover any Exchange object: E-mail message and/or attachment Contact list Calendars Tasks Journal entries Entire folders and EDBs TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange 2007 includes an intuitive Windows-style GUI that allows administrators to view the contents of any Microsoft Exchange 5.5, 2000, 2003 or 2007 databases (EDBs). TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange 2007 is also capable of opening and recovering granular data objects from corrupted EDBs. Exchange objects can be restored directly to an Exchange Server or sent via SMTP to a user-defined destination. TSM FastBack for Microsoft Exchange 2007 is integrated with Active Directory and Exchange Server security to limit access to only authorized users at both the backup and restore systems.
  8. TSM FastBack can be used as a stand-alone solution, or in conjunction with central data protection and archive solutions such as IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. In these integrated environments, use FastBack to provide higher levels of protection and near-instant recovery for your critical Windows applications servers, in the data center and in remote offices. TSM backs up the FastBack repository, in the background, eliminating the need for backup windows for your production servers. The amount of data at risk – your recovery point objective – will be reduced to almost zero; and the time it takes to get back up and running after a failure – your recovery time objective – will also be near zero. For remote offices, FastBack provides local, automated backup and recovery, plus it enables backup consolidation across all the remote offices, and disaster recovery / business resilience for those offices. FastBack seamlessly protects any application or data object on Windows servers, since it operates at the block level with the operating system, not the file system.
  9. TSM FastBack protects critical Windows servers in remote offices and in the data center, and is positioned nicely between Tivoli CDP for Files and Tivoli Storage Manager to provide a complete, enterprise-wide solution set. CDP for Files protects desktop and laptop systems, and TSM provides protection for a broad range of systems and applications, provides industry-leading scalability, and support for a wide range of disk and tape systems.
  10. Objective of slide Demonstrate why FilesX capabilities are best for customer needs relative to key competitors. Speaking points EMC acquired Avamar providing them with a strong ROBO solution including client-side deduplication; however their Kashya CDP acquisition is heavier for customers due to agent installation, esp cumbersome for ROBOs Symantec acquired Revivio CDP, agentless – in a distressed asset purchase that has proven difficult for them to integrate effectively with other solutions . Symantec has good success with Backup Exec CPS and System Recovery. Now Backup Exec offered as Online service. CA acquired XOSoft for CDP – mediocre capabilities CommVault has an integrated solution for DC and ROBO – and provides broad application support – largely focused on Windows environments HP resells Mendocino Software CDP (another company we assessed and deemed non-competitive) Microsoft offers Data Protection Manager, primarily seen as a customer boxed – lets try and see – for now. But still a contender. Field will encounter them. Technical team’s notes This chart broadly assesses FilesX capabilities relative to key competitors as a primary input to help prioritize investment focus. While an attempt is made here to represent all of a vendors’ solutions, this chart is focused on application replication and continuous data protection offerings. Commvault is distinguished by having a fully seamless low end to high-end offering. Key to Coloring: Tivoli already has CDP for Files but this is really geared towards laptop and mobile office environments Need Block-level CDP with application focus for greater granularity, esp helpful in Windows and enterprise application environments Application protection attempts to represent overall support for applications. Asigra and Commvault have longest list of application coverage, in Unix, Linux and other environments. Commvault supports Windows, HP, Linux and Solaris. Asigra supports Windows, HP, Linux, Solaris, AIX, MAC, and AS/400. Asigra and Revivio show green here based on agentless technology which is a distinguishing feature for application support. We still have technical questions on Asigra that we intend to answer in DD. Other vendors require various types of agents including device and file level drivers which typically require reboot after install. Commvault has probably the strongest Windows support , followed by the group of Asigra, FilesX and Asempra. These all have individual mailbox restore for Exchange and pretty good overall Windows support. Commvault seems to have much tighter connections with Microsoft and is known in the industry for its Windows support. Other platform support reflects the extend to which non-Windows platforms and applications are supported. Avamar, CommVault, Mendocino and Asigra all have strong non-Windows support. Asigra distinguishes itself a little with Mac, Netware (Commvault also has this) and AS400 support. Most vendors have traditional backup and recovery for non-Windows environments. Remote Office support could arguably reflect any of the strong Windows vendors. Commvault distinguishes itself here with a unified end to end solution with its enterprise product. Asigra is shown as green for its combination of technology that is very attractive to remote environments including incremental forever (they all have this), compression, encryption, data dedupl, and some sophisticated workload balancing across multiple clients. FilesX and Asempra have instant recovery (Asempra calls it Virtual Recovery on Demand) which allows access to windows applications before all data is actually recovered. This is a Very interesting and valuable feature. Asigra is unique (along w Avamar) in that it provides Client-side data deduplication , which helps our customers compress data before transmitting to a centralized data protection server. This can be especially valuable for protecting remote office data. NOTE: A red rating in the “ Target Data Deduplication ” category is not bad for this assessment, since the focus here is on application replication which may include client side data deduplication. Target side data deduplication function is the focus of Project Kathmandu and is complementary with many open VTL solutions, providing a possible 2-for-1 acquisition. Secure Storage and Data attempts to reflect the sophistication and attention given by the vendors to security of storage, both in flight and at rest. Commvault and Asigra seemed the vendors who paid most attention to security features. Other’s claims (eg, Avamar) proved to be weak on further investigations. Scalability and maturity are reflections of the length of time in the market, # of customers, and customer scaling. Commvault and Asigra appear to be the most mature technologies. Asigra further has some autonomic healing as part of its DS-System (chargeable feature) that constantly searches for data corruptions and internal inconsistencies and remedies them automatically. Ease of integration only applies to vendors who we are looking at. They all seem to be pretty similar in integration opportunities with TSM, Tivoli and IBM. Skills also only applies to vendors of interest and it attempts to show any special capabilities we’ve observed in meetings to date. Asigra’s MSP enablement is of note here. Service Offering - The new focus is SaaS, which IBM plays in but offers the Arsenal suite – i.e., AVAMAR and NetBackup, need presense of FilesX and TSM to be offered by our own IBM global services, not the competitor’s productrs. Symantec now provides Protection Network, with storage and Backup Exec as a service, EMC offers online protection for small through enterprise, SeaGate eVault and Iron Mountain LiveVault are serious contenders in this space. CommVault working with partner service providers in offering CommVault as a solution.
