WELCOME!
Haere mai, nau mai.
Welcome to the Auckland Pride Festival 2014. Yes, we’re back!
Last year, the return of the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade provided our
Rainbow community and supporters with a chance to celebrate our diversity
and the gains we had made in the preceding 10 years. This past year has
seen even further progress with the passing of the Marriage Equality Bill.
Our community continues to have a lot to celebrate and much to be proud of.
In 2014, the Auckland Pride Festival has more shows, more events, and
more activities to enjoy, with a noticeable increase in participation from
Auckland’s theatre community and from our youth sector. This growth has
been made possible by the significant sponsorship and funding investments
the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade has attracted.
Unitec Institute of Technology has come on board as the Principal Festival
Partner. Getting the active support of New Zealand’s leading institute of
technology is a coming of age for our celebration. The Unitec team is full
of passion and enthusiasm and has provided the resources we need to take
the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade to the next level. We are hugely
appreciative of this support.
ATEED and Auckland Council have also continued their vital support of the
Festival and Parade, and a new partnership with the US Embassy (thanks to
outgoing Ambassador David Huebner) has resulted in the development of
the NXT:14 Youth Leaders Conference, an innovative new initiative within
the 2014 programme.
The Auckland Pride Festival 2014 runs for 18 unforgettable days and nights
from Thursday 6 to Sunday 23 February. So clear your calendars, book your
flights, and make sure you don’t miss out.
Our celebrations kick off with a Takatāpui Dawn Ceremony at Okahu Bay
on Thursday 6 February, followed by the fabulous Auckland Pride Gala at
Q Theatre on Friday 7 February.
Thanks to your feedback, this year we are delighted to be starting the
Auckland Pride Parade at the later time of 7pm on Saturday 22 February.
With the continued support of the Ponsonby Business Association and local
residents, we are back on Ponsonby Road. The theme of the 2014 Parade is
TIME – and with over 40 floats registered, it’s going to be a great time indeed!

highlight is undoubtedly the hilarious Pam Ann at the Aotea Centre on
Friday 21 February.
The Auckland Pride Festival Trust has worked hard to bring the 2014
Auckland Pride Festival and Parade to the community. A huge personal
thanks to our board members, to their accommodating loved ones, to the

LE JEU DE MÉCHANT – THE WICKED GAME
The Auckland Pride Gala is the official champagne cork-popping opening of the
Auckland Pride Festival 2014!
Hosted by the magnificent Alison Mau in the glamorous surroundings of Q Theatre
on Queen Street, the Gala is Pride’s premiere, black tie, dress-up occasion.
This year’s Gala is being directed by award-winning director, writer and actor
Lexie Matheson to recapture the magic of the fin de siècle cabaret scene in pre-war
Europe.
Le Jeu de Méchant – The Wicked Game will preview the very best of the 2014 Auckland
Pride Festival in all its rainbow-coloured facets. It’s a sampler of treats to tempt and
tantalize, a supreme distillation of talent, and a dazzling display of theatrical diversity!
The evening will feature special Gala guest performances to thrill and delight from
sensual circus-theatre company The Dust Palace, as well as the return of everybody’s
favourite erotic burlesque troupe, In Flagrante.
Provocative performers from the 2014 festival programme will include Charlotte
Yates, Mika and the fabulous Kita Mean, plus seductive excerpts from Songs For Guy,
Mumbai Monologues, Queen by Sam Brooks and The Legacy Project.
With more climaxes than a summer romance, The Auckland Pride Gala is a fantastic
opportunity to experience the artists, performers, events and entertainment within
this year’s Auckland Pride Festival.
So join us as we launch into February’s fabulous month of queer culture and celebration,
because we want you to play the game – the wicked game!

Mika’s Aroha Mardi Gras
Legacy Project
Purple Rainbow
Lashings of Whipped Cream
Mika’s 3rd Aroha Mardi Gras this Waitangi Day is a launch for his brand new pop
single, Dress To Express.
Legacy Project presents new plays, written and directed by emerging talented Kiwis
exploring modern queer themes. Stories of love, lust, family, friendship, the search for
connection and what it really means to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender today.
These are our stories, this is our legacy.
The Marriage Equality Bill has passed, gays are tying to knot and the irrepressibly
straight Roberto senses something ominous in the air. The LGBT community is out in
droves, but this ain’t no Pride Parade. This is the apocalypse all those Conservatives
were predicting! Can Roberto escape with his sexuality unscathed?!
After charming audiences at the Sydney Opera House, Brazilian drag diva Rhubarb
Rouge (the alter ego of performance artist Ricky Beirao) brings her brand new show
to Auckland!
D’ You Remember? Written by Rhona Vickoce and directed by Sarah Jansen. Four
dykes at a wedding; but who catches the bouquet?
Come out for the night with Auckland’s favourite comedy dance troupe, Dynamotion,
as they spin another great tale entirely through dance.
Full Disclosure, written by Nathan Joe and directed by Patrick Graham. Tonight’s the
night they have sex. There’s just one small problem...
Choreographed by Lara Fischel-Chisholm and Thomas Sainsbury, it’ll be a colourcoordinated hour of rhythmic hips, robot arms and spirit fingers with the coolest,
campest soundtrack this side of the Bombays.
DRESS TO EXPRESS SINGLE RELEASE
Mika hosts a galaxy of TV stars, hip hop champs, eye-opening new artists and
Queens of the South Seas in a one-night-only Festival of Love!
Special guests include Ashley Tonga (X Factor), Identity Dance Crew (New Zealand’s
Got Talent) Megan Alatini (NZ Idol) and TAKI Māori Kapa Haka.
As always, Mika’s Aroha Mardi Gras will showcase our next generation of fierce young
artists. Exciting emerging talents include Hannah Martin, Zakk d’Larte, PattyBoy,
Yaya, and Jaycee Tanuvasa and the cast of Teen Faggots Come To Life.
Proudly staged with the support of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s

A SESSION WITH A TEENAGE DOMINATRIX
For one provocative hour, The Basement Studio becomes a BDSM dungeon and the
audience a block of prospective clients as Rouge’s Mistress Dominique shares the
secrets of her profession.
In an intimate journey of epic proportions, she takes the audience into her confidence,
revealing her own desires and demons as she tells the story of her life.
Written by award-winning New Zealand playwright Fiona Samuel and directed by
Geoff Pinfield, Lashings of Whipped Cream is a hilarious, sexy and surprisingly tender
one-on-one session with one of life’s survivors – a theatrical close encounter.

One Night Only
BERTHA, BUCKWHEAT & TESS TICKLE
Bertha the Beast is back!
Returning by popular demand after a sellout 2013 festival show, two becomes three as
Auckland drag legends, Buckwheat & Tess Tickle, are joined by the one and only Bertha.
These three divas will be dishing the dirt in dressing room dragumentary style.
What inspired them to do drag? What hurdles and prejudice have they faced?
From Pacific Island and Māori backgrounds, what was the reaction of their communities?
What does their pre-show regime entail? And how long can one do drag for?!
In the beginning there was Bertha. Hailing from South Auckland, she grew up in a
god-fearing home and began her drag career in Auckland’s Staircase nightclub on
Fort Street in the mid 80s.
This Polynesian mama with a whole lot of love to give, gave it her all, every time.
Her larger than life character, sharp wit and intellect, and dynamic on-stage style
elevated her to Goddess.
Bertha gave birth to a new house of drag that would anchor the Auckland scene. Divas
in her house include Buckwheat, Tess Tickle, the late great Bust-Op and Bambi Slut,
Shanice Van Dyke, Venus Mantrapp and Tatiana.
Buckwheat and Tess Tickle, two of New Zealand’s most successful drag divas, are
proud to join Bertha for this historic cabaret performance about the transformative
story behind an Auckland dynasty of drag.
Also featuring Miss Venus Mantrapp and the soulful sounds of DJ James Leuii.

Teen Faggots Come To Life
Riding in Cars with (Mostly Straight) Boys
For three fabulous nights, five teenage superhero stories will be staged at The Basement
Studio.
“I love you. In a gay way. As a friend. But also in a gay way. I love you both ways.”
MIKA HAKA FOUNDATION
SMOKE LABOURS PRODUCTIONS
These are genuine heartfelt stories performed by brave young gay, transgender,
fa’afafine, fakaleiti and bisexual Māori and Pacific Island artists.
Kyle is an everyday young gay guy: over-neurotic, over-enthusiastic and over falling
in love with straight guys. Or so he thinks, until the object of his affections turns out
to be not as straight as Kyle thought he was.
Fierce, fabulous, funny, fearless and fatally entertaining, the five solo performances
are: Amanaki Prescott-Faletau with S’he, Isaac Ah Kiong with Michael’s World,
Raukawa Tuhura with Takatāpui, Darren Taniue with Coming Home, and Jaycee
Tanuvasa with A Different Kind of Love.
Riding in Cars with (Mostly Straight) Boys is just your average gay-straight bromantic
comedy with a twist – it’s happening in a car in a car park near you! The audience is
invited into the action, as Kyle and his relationships play out in real-time in and around
the cars of his youth.
We are here to lay it on floor, so come along and take a walk in our heels or sneakers.
It’s your choice. You can hate us, but can’t ignore us!
Written by award-winning playwright Sam Brooks and starring Dan Veint and
Calum Gittins, Riding in Cars with (Mostly Straight) Boys is an hour of hilarity, heartbreak and homosexuality!

SMOKE LABOURS PRODUCTIONS
Written by Sam Brooks and directed by Harry McNaughton, Queen is an awardwinning play that explores the contradictions, difficulties and joys of being a young
gay man in today’s society.
Queen is all the parts of being gay that people don’t talk about. It’s funny, it’s angry,
it’s unflinching and it gets to what it means to be gay, here and now.
“The law deals with the ‘legal’ gay world. Being gay under-18 is a hidden world. Queen
opens the door. They are the future gay community, and they declare, ‘I am Queen,

and producer Gil Eva Craig, who brings a lush, at times almost eerie, electronic texture
and depth to Yates’ songs.
“The arrangements are sympathetic to the poetic lyrics, and Yates’ melodic voice is
mature and assured. Archipelago rewards repeat-play.” – NZ Herald

“Give yourself over to absolute pleasure.”
Silo Cinema proudly presents the 1959 American screen
classic, Some Like it Hot, in collaboration with the
Auckland Pride Festival. Come and watch this Oscarwinning drag comedy underneath the stars at Silo Park

Winner of the 2013 Cannes Palme d’Or, this extraordinary
film brings a rare authenticity to its story of a young
French woman’s impassioned love affair with a more
experienced woman, and her struggle to define her own
identity.
In a star-making role, Adèle Exarchopoulos is Adèle,
a passionate young woman who has a yearning she
doesn’t quite understand until a chance encounter with
the blue-haired Emma ignites a flame and brings her to

Set in 1985, Dallas Buyers Club tells the true-life story of Ron Woodroof, a homophobic

12. AUCKLAND PRIDE PARADE
Auckland Pride Parade
AROHA MAI, AROHA ATU. FEEL THE LOVE AT THE
AUCKLAND PRIDE PARADE!
Photograph: gayexpress.co.nz
With over 40 entries expected, the Auckland Pride Parade
will be the highlight of the 2014 Auckland Pride Festival
celebrating the Rainbow Community in Aotearoa New
Zealand.
New Zealand is a country of voyagers. We are the result of
long journeys and brave decisions taken by our ancestors,
our families, or even ourselves to cross the largest ocean
in the world to reach its most distant islands.
Māori, European, Asian and Pacific cultures are now
coming together to form something new – old roots, fresh
growth. New Zealanders are slowly plaiting our various
cultures, histories and sexual identities together to make
something stronger, something unique. By preserving the
coloured threads, we create the pattern. By remembering
our past, we weave our future.
The theme for the Auckland Pride Parade 2014 is TIME.
Our memories are filled with first peoples, gods, canoes
and ships, art, dance and music. History is colour and
sound. We’ve lived at the margins and we’ve come
into the centre. We’ve had political struggles and legal
victories. We mourn the people we have lost. We honour
our forebears, but celebrate the living.
Moving into twilight, the Auckland Pride Parade 2014
will happen at that magic hour when things change
from light to night. It is a time to remember. It is a time
to shine brightly!
The Auckland Pride Parade route travels in a northerly
direction up Ponsonby Road from Western Park to Three
Lamps. Ponsonby Road will be closed to traffic from 4pm
to 10pm. Parking restrictions apply on Ponsonby Road
and adjoining roads.
Getting to the Auckland Pride Parade shouldn’t be a
drag. Leave your car at home and catch public transport.
All bus services will be operating to a normal Saturday
service. Minor route changes are in place. The Inner
Link will be operating via Wellington and Pitt Streets.

middle and end of the Parade route.
With exclusive pre-show performances and celebrity
MCs, the GABA GlamZone – Uenuku Motu, or Rainbow
Island – takes over the premium viewing location at
Western Park, guaranteeing the best seat in the house!
In the event of an emergency, please notify the nearest
Pride Parade Crew member, or a uniformed security
guard, who will have direct access to the Parade
Operational HQ. Otherwise, call 111 and help will be
dispatched immediately.
Hosted by the Gay Auckland Business Association, the
GABA GlamZone will provide a party atmosphere in a
beautiful setting with fine food, a professional bar and
all the amenities you need for a fun and comfortable
Parade experience.
The current liquor ban on Ponsonby Road will be
enforced. If you fancy a wee tipple, we suggest that you
visit one of the many fabulous bars and restaurants along
Ponsonby Road – then join us at Victoria Park Market for
the massive PROUD party, commencing immediately
after the Auckland Pride Parade.
All-table, one-level seating means everyone who visits the
Rainbow Island is a VIP with unobstructed views, as well
as access to reserved standing areas for those wanting
to have a closer look from just behind the barriers.
After a fantastic pre-Parade entertainment line-up, one
of New Zealand’s best MCs will guide you through the
floats and groups taking part in the Parade itself. Then
stay on to enjoy the after-show party!

The Rainbow Asian Youth Community
Needs Dialogue
RAINBOW YOUTH MEETING
This meeting turns an eye to the cultural diversity
present in our rainbow community. The most recent
New Zealand census shows that our Asian ethnic groups
have almost doubled in size in the last ten years, and
with them, the number of Asian queer and trans* people
has also increased.
Rainbow Youth is hosting a meeting to explore how to
connect and engage these young queer and trans* Asians
more effectively within our community.
The evening will include a discussion of the cultural
needs and issues of the young Asians in our community,
as well as looking at what our organisations currently
have to offer this community, and what can be improved.
This meeting marks a step towards creating more cultural
inclusion in our rainbow community and is open to all
who want to share their ideas and join the conversation.

The Rainbow Tick
Heroic Gardens Festival 2014
We spend a huge amount of our lives at work – but just how welcoming and safe are
workplaces and organisations for Rainbow communities? And how can a business
show it understands and welcomes us?
The longstanding Heroic Gardens Festival is back in its 18th year, giving attendees
exclusive access to some of Auckland’s most striking private gardens, all with a point
of difference, while raising funds for Mercy Hospice Auckland.
The Rainbow Tick Certification Programme is designed to address these issues. To be
awarded the Rainbow Tick means an organisation has demonstrated it is a safe and
welcoming place for our communities, whether as employees or customers.
The Heroic Gardens Festival 2014 will open the gates to 21 must-see summer gardens
from Titirangi in the west to Hunua in the south. Showcasing gay and lesbian-owned
gardens, the festival has grown to include the gardens of other Mercy Hospice supporters.
A truly diverse and inclusive work environment is directly linked to enhanced
performance and strengthened brand reputation. When an organisation allows its
employees to be themselves, they are more efficient, more productive and more loyal
to the organisation.
Proceeds from every ticket sold will support Mercy Hospice Auckland’s on-going
work, providing essential services, free of charge, to patients and families facing lifelimiting illness.
CERTIFICATION PROGRAMME LAUNCH
The Rainbow Tick acts as a symbol to customers that this is an organisation that
understands and welcomes them.
Featuring Urzila Carlson, this is an invitation-only event, with a limited number of
invitations available on application.

Opening its doors long before law reform, the Staircase spanned three venues, first
on Fort Street, then on Albert Street, and finally on Karangahape Road. This reunion
gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution that owners Dennis O’Brien
and Stuart Buckley have made to our community.
Taking over both levels of Legend Bar & Club, we will be recreating the infamous
Piano Bar downstairs and the popular Staircase Nightclub upstairs.
Proudly supported by Sky’s Rialto Channel, the reunion will be hosted by Bertha,
Buckwheat and Tess Tickle, who’ll be joined by original Staircase DJs Alex Taylor,
Bevan Keys, James Leuii, Stephen Green, and of course, Tony Young!
The downstairs Piano Bar will open at 8pm, offering an opportunity to reminisce with
Stuart and Dennis to a live piano accompaniment.
The upstairs Staircase Nightclub opens at 10pm, with shows at 11pm, midnight and
1am – plus a shameful dance-of-the-desperados show at 3am for those still standing!
If you survived the Staircase, you do not want to miss this special reunion event – one

Auckland for one night only. DJ Tranny Dad and The Duchess of Pork will take over the
new Pohutukawa Courtyard for an evening of demented disco, perverted performance
and trampolining transvestites!
WHEN
The Vogue Fabrics DJs will be bringing a global circus of genderfuck superfreaks along
for the ride, including the outrageously long-legged Sydney style icon Apocalypstik,
plus our own inimitable Cindy of Samoa.
Experience three spectacular stage shows under the historic Victoria Park chimney
starring beautifully deviant erotic burlesque troupe In Flagrante, Mika featuring
Hannah Martin and Zakk d’Larte, plus the fabulous Kita Mean and the K Holes!
