WelcomeThanks for coming, I’m sure you are all here because of the Global Health Data Exchange, not because there is food
Intro (refer to opening remarks?)For evidence-based improvements to global health, it all starts with dataGHME about making progress for people’s health with better measurement and evidenceWe are hearing about new, exciting methodsAll of this work requires data
If you are not collecting your own data, there are many, many data sourcesMany data sources in every country: range from int’l orgs to governments to commercial, academic and non-profit organizationsData repositories provide a central resource to get dataIndicator databases contain comparable indicators and references to source dataWorking with a lot of data sources at IHME: tedious task to find relevant and useful data
True for all kinds of data, not just health dataFinding out about relevant dataNavigating sites in different languagesWebsites change often (layout, hard to navigate) or are not availableMultiple titles of datasets, e.g. Azerbaijan DHS 2006 = MICS 2006, Niger 2006 same thingDates get mixed up (e.g. data collection vs. publication)Lots of data stuck in text and other documents (unstructured data)Getting access to the dataFinding a data providerGetting background on the data
Recap: many data sources, stony road to find & get access to data:What we need is a resource that lists data from the different and provides the information needed during data search
Proof that the tool actually exists, Abby will provide the details
Primarily a catalogSecondary: platform for downloadFuture: community – made deliberate decision to exclude for first phase, launch the catalog and get feedback on what features would be most useful
Information on population includes information about information on population healthBesides the obvious need for this kind of tool, it fits particularly well with IHME’s mission
Open data: healthdata.gov, .gov.uk, .au; science commonsDrupal: Web CMS, Used by more and more organizations, including WhiteHouse.gov, Modular: point out current set up and possibilities for adding featuresSOLR: for Google-like search with additional powerful features
Providing information about data!!Focus for the immediate future:Added records: low-hanging fruit firstHave most large survey series like DHS, … 5000 surveyrecords, esp. other survey series1300 censuses waiting in existing recordsHave much more administrative data, esp. for health financing, need to be added (NHAs, budgets, ARs, etc.)Historical data (reports)Adding records systematicallyBUT: Can host ANY of those data for data providers (data or records to link back)
Primary function: data catalogDataset record provides information about a dataset, most are not available on the GHDxDiscuss how much work this is!!Citation: credit data producersStatus – recap that it’s data that EXIST, not necessarily in the GHDx
Share your data: happy to just have the record and point to you
