House of the Week: $2.5 million mansion in Skaneateles -
Syracuse.com
Skaneateles, N.Y. -- When it came time for Eric and Sarah Smith to design their home in
Skaneateles, they had a clear inspiration.
The couple spent a lot of time in Europe because of Eric's work. They owned a home there for 10
years.
Eric Smith said they wanted to replicate what they
saw there. But it went beyond simple appearances.
In a previous job, Eric said he came into contact
with some of the highest-end touches and finishes
one can put in a home. They include elements like
white bronze in the kitchen backsplash and door
hinges, luxury fixtures and faucets throughout the
home, imported sinks and a massive French-made
range.
"For me, I was really concerned about the detail," Eric said. "It was really a focus on what a lot of
people would call silly stuff, but it was important to us."
Also important to the Smiths was that the house look like it belongs.
Even though the home was finished in 2009, it was meant to look like it had been in place for
decades. Construction took about two years.
Inside, the home has all the luxury elements you'd expect. There's in-floor radiant heat, imported
tiles, decorative finishes, a built-in coffee station and more.
Sarah Smith designed the chandelier in the main entryway. The chandelier can be automatically
lowered to the floor for cleaning.
But there are highlights you wouldn't notice too. Instead of standard polyurethane, the Smiths used
a special finish on the floors to cut down on fumes and be more environmentally friendly. The finish
is made in Belgium and based on vegetable oil.
For the foundation, they used insulating concrete forms, an environmentally friendly and energy-
efficient building material.
"We tried to be as eco-conscious as possible," Smith said.
The home has an extra-wide three-car garage and a patio that can be accessed from multiple points
on the first floor. The finished basement is complete with an exercise room, storage space and a full
bathroom and bedroom.
Smith was previously the CEO of an office furniture manufacturer in Connecticut and later owned
BB Lumber in Jamesville, which became BB Albany Pallet after a merger. He sold his stake to
partners and is now relocating to a warmer climate for health reasons.
Smith grew up outside Utica.
