Writing
The editorial writers are the
most intelligent people in
the publication.
Who are the
editorial
writers ?
WHAT
MUST BE
THERE IN
THE
EDITORIAL
PAGE?
1. Folio – consists of the page
number, date of publication, and
name of the newspaper usually
written on the top of the page.
2. MASTHEAD- the editorial box
containing the logo, names of the staff
members and position in the staff, the
publisher and other pertinent data
about the newspaper. A logo ( a
shorter word for logotype ) is a cut
which contains an identifying word or
words, such as the name of the
newspaper.
WHAT
MUST BE
THERE IN
THE
EDITORIAL
PAGE?
3. Editorial proper-a commentary
written by any of the editors who
comments or gives the opinion of
the staff or of the whole paper on
various subjects. It is the stand of
the paper, sometimes called Top
editorial/ Lead editorial.
TRIVIA: The top editorial must be
published on the LEFT side of the
paper since, psychologically
speaking, people tend to read
more articles which are written on
the right side.
WHAT
MUST BE
THERE IN
THE
EDITORIAL
PAGE?
4. Editorial column-a
personal opinion written by
the columnist himself. Like the
editorial proper, it may attack,
teach, entertain, nor appeal
depending upon its purpose.
It uses the pronoun “I”.
TRIVIA: The font style which
shall be used in the nameplate
of the columnist must be
tough should he is a man.
WHAT
MUST BE
THERE IN
THE
EDITORIAL
PAGE?
5.Editorial cartoon-usually a
caricature emphasizing a
simple point. Usually
humorous, it has the function
of the editorial. Standing by
itself, it is not a compliment of
the editorial paper.
6. Editorial liner- a short
statement or quoted sayings
placed at the end of editorial
columns or editorials to drive
home some messages.
WHAT
MUST BE
THERE IN
THE
EDITORIAL
PAGE?
7.Letter to the Editor-a letter
sent in by the reader giving his
personal views on certain
aspects.
8.Survey- this part elicits
opinions from other people
who are not part of the
publication
There is a newspeg.
Newspeg- brief
statement about the
news event upon which
the editorial is based.
•It is an opinionated
news story.
•It reflects the majority
vote of editorial board.
•It is unsigned.
Editorials have:
1)Introduction, body, and conclusion
like news stories
2) An explanation of the issue,
especially complex issues
3) A timely news angle
Editorials have:
4) Opinions of the writer delivered
in a professional manner,
engage issues, not personalities
5) Alternative solutions
6) A solid & concise conclusion. Give
it some punch.
Sources of an editorial:
•News stories
•Researches that back up opinion
•Special occasions
Kinds of Editorial
• Editorial of Information-It seeks to give
information on facts unknown to the reader.
(K12)
• Editorial of Interpretation- It explains the
significance or meaning of a news event. (NSO)
• Editorial of Criticism- It points out the good or
bad features of a problem which suggests a
solution. (RH Bill)
Kinds of Editorial
• Editorial of Commendation- It praises,
commends or gives tribute to a person or
organization. (Retiring Principal)
• Editorial of Argumentation- The editor argues
to persuade. (Sex Education)
• Editorial of Entertainment- It evokes a smile, a
chuckle, while suggesting truth. (PacMan)
How to write Editorial?
Organiz
e your
editorial
in three
parts:
1. The introduction
2. The body
3. The ending
THE INTRODUCTION
The first contains the NEWSPEG with
the reaction.
It is usually one short paragraph.
A newspeg is a brief statement about
the news event upon which the
editorial is based or an existing issue
that needs to be solved right away.
Eg. 1 (English)
The Department of Education recently launched
the English language as the medium of instruction for all
academic subjects except for Filipino both for high school and
elementary departments in public schools. The said
promulgation is said to be the solution for the deteriorating
competence of Filipinos in global communication.
-Philippine Collegeian Tomo 87 Blg 17
Scholars believed that the ethnic origins of a
society make nation construction possible. The creation
of a Philippine Department of Culture is one thing that
is apparently necessary for this objective.
- UPB Outcrop Tomo 36 Isyu 3
THE BODY
The body should give main ideas which shall be
supported by less important details.
The body may take two or three short paragraphs
that support or justify the reaction.
Present both sides of an issue and clarify tricky
aspects with a widely understood analogy or with an
illustration that makes for easier understanding.
Organize all data into well-reasoned arguments, with
each argument leading up to the conclusion.
THE CONCLUSION
The ending sometimes called the clincher,
summarizes the editorial stand.
Eg. 1
Pilipinas.
H o w t o b e g i n a n
E d i t o r i a l ?
• A simple statement- (The May 2016 polls is fast
approaching so by this time, we should know
who is to vote).
• A question which calls attention- (Is P-Noy a
really son of Noynoy?) What does the Philippines
need: Education or Condoms?
• A striking statement- (We will all die tomorrow!)
(There is no hope left for us!)
H o w t o b e g i n a n
E d i t o r i a l ?
• A quotation- (Youth is the hope of the
fatherland).
• A narrative - (The RH Bill was believed to be the
solution to the growing population of the
country).
1. Pick a significant topic. Collect
information and facts.
P1: Write the newspeg.
P2: Explain why it is important to
readers.
P3: Give opposing viewpoints first
with its quotations & facts.
P4: Refute the other side and
develop your case using facts.
STEPS IN WRITING
EDITORIAL
5. Repeat key phrases to reinforce
an idea into reader’s mind.
6. Give realistic solution.
8. Wrap it up in a concise punch.
9. Keep it p to 500 words; make
every work; never use “I”.
Do’s and Don’ts in Editorial Writing
• Win the reader’s interest with an impelling lead
paragraph.
• Avoid generalities by using plenty of facts and by
telling what those facts mean.
• Keep your editorial short; around 500 words only.
• Do not preach, scold or moralize.
Do’s and Don’ts in Editorial Writing
• Relate editorials directly to the lives of the reader.
• Avoid the first person, “I”. Use the pronoun “We”.
• Write simply.
• Be concise
• Accomplish your purpose.
“I may disapprove of what you say,
but I will defend to the death your right to say it”
Voltaire
THANK YOU and have a
nice journey in the
