Feedback video
1. Feedback
This is the feedback we got from others in our class after watching the first draft of our music video. We are
planning to look over the feedback they give and act upon it. They have made comments on Mise en scene,
camerawork and editing, if they think anything could be improved we will make sure we look at it and change
what we can.
2. Feedback
The music genre is clear, it reflects to the conventions and codes of their
genre.
They have used enough close up shots of the artist
Main artist is positioned strong and bold, as they have applied the use of
thirds in their camerawork.
Adding to this they have used a wide range of shot such as long angle shots,
medium shots and extreme close up shots.
The mise-en-scene was well thought
-costume- matches with their genre type
-body language-good use of body language
The lip synching is in synch well.
The shots matches the beats where relevant
Good use of transition, as it cuts to different scene, its balance with the
performance based and concept based.
Overall they have applied sufficient range of shots, thought about the genre
conventions and code, and ensure their shots matches with the tempo of the
music. However the only drawbacks were lack of different locations and a
narrative.
The misc-en-scene relates to both the genre and the lyrics of the
song, which is very good. You can clearly tell from the shots
taken from the main artist that he’s supposed to be the cool guy
that gets all of the girls. The editing was also well done – most of
the shots are in sync, which works very well. I was a little
confused with the lack of location changes, however – I think
only having one location made things a little stale towards the
end of the video. I would also suggest playing around with the
font in the shots where there is nothing but that – it looks a
little boring after the first time. Maybe even overlay the text
over shots of the artists saying them? Overall, I think it’s
excellent for a first draft – and it can only get better from here!
Genre: Rap/Hip-Hop/Indie There are enough close up shots of
the artist. In terms of the camerawork, there were a lot of
camera angles (close up shot, low angle shots, etc.) and shots
which relates to the genre. However, there were also few
handheld camerawork. I think it would be better if some shots
would be positioned with the tripod.
Relates to the genre Mise-en-scene is excellent. It relates well to
the genre and conveys the star image appropriately.
Location is also great! In terms of props, you could use a little bit
more props to make sure that the concept of the music video is
effective. Concept, it is good but it could be better. Performance
– GREAT!
3. Feedback
The performance of the main artist is strong and there is a clear consideration for
mise en scene in terms of costume and styling which is relevant to the genre and
helps to convey the representation of teens going from being conformists (black
and white 6th form uniform) to the more colourful/ casual clothing see during the
rooftop scenes.) The main drawback of the video is that the overall concept is not
clear. I would suggest you sit down and make a list of all the things/ social
activities that your teenage audience would consume/ take part in and consider
how you can include montage shots of these activities in your video. Remember
your concept is about the freedom of youth culture. Consider this in terms of the
overall mise en scene (costume ,props) camerawork, editing (including special
effects/transitions). In order to pull this concept of you need to show how the
video has been constructed in a way that breaks typical conventions. Watch some
concept based dance videos for reference.
The music genre is clear as the costume (mise en scene) matches the
lyrics and the costume is suitable. The artist is clearly seen as there are
close up shots as well as long & mid shots. The video cuts to the beat
but there could be less hand held shots. There could be another
location to enhance the narrative of the music video. Over all the
music video is appropriate for the genre and was good.
Relates effectively to the genre, the concept isn’t obvious
to the audience. Brilliant performance wise. In terms of
weather the music genre was clear it wasn’t really clear
that it was indie rap and at first glance it shares traits of
hip-hop. The shots in this music are framed effectively and
the lip syncing is done quite well and the shots are edited
with the song/lyrics appropriately but could use a bit of
variety in the range of shot types and transitions perhaps.
The mise en scene is very good in this music video
especially the costume of the artist and the props really fit
the song and the song lyrics well. Overall the music videos
very well made although the genre isn’t all that obvious
the music video still is able to effectively convey its
message to the audience through costume design and
performance add some close up shots and slow motion
edits at certain parts to boost the effectiveness of certain
spots of the video.
4. Reaction to Feedback
We have looked through this feedback as a group and have agreed to take in to consideration what our peers think
needs to change. This was only a first draft of our video and we was planning to make a few changes anyway, reading
what others have to say has made it much easier for us to know what we need to do. We have highlighted in red the
parts of the feedback that we are taking in to consideration the most and we agree that things do need to be changed
on these parts.
Lots of the comments made by our peers are about the concept of the video not being clear enough, as a group we
have also agreed on this and are planning to change some bits to make the concept clearer. The concept of our video is
freedom of youth culture, the teens in the video are stuck in society at the beginning when we see them in their suits
but when they go to the rooftop they are free and can do what they want. To make sure we make this clearer we have
written a list of things that we think are associated with teenagers in this day and age, these are things such as
Instagram, selfies, smoking, alcohol and many more things that lots of teenagers do. Having this list will help us as we
can be sure to have them included in the video, if the teenagers are doing these things on the rooftop it is clearer to
the audience that this is the place that they come to, to be themselves.
There were some other comments made in our feedback that we have taken in to consideration but do not think that
they would work if we changed them, for example some people commented on only using one location, this has been
done intentionally and if we used more than one location it would not work as well with the concept. The location is a
rooftop, which is the place we are using to represent freedom and happiness, filming somewhere else would take
away the impact of the rooftop.
5. Reaction to Feedback
There were also some comments about the handheld shots we have in the video, and some people think we should
have more shots on the tripod. The hand held shots are also intentional, the video is supposed to look as if the
teenagers are filming it, just having fun and doing what they want. The handheld shots enhance this image as it
looks unprofessional and like the teens are filming it themselves, this works with the concept of freedom and doing
what they want.
We have taken in to consideration the comment about using more transitions between shots. We think that we
could add some more in certain places but not too many, we want our shots to cut to the beat of the music and be
quite strong and abrupt, if we use to many transitions it would not have the effect we want.
As this is only a first draft there are some parts of the video that we have not got clips for yet and will need to be
filled in after we have done more filming. In the video there are some shots with just text, these are parts that have
no footage yet. Once we have filmed more we will be filling in these spaces.
The peer feedback we received has really helped us with making some vital decisions about our music video and
the changes we want to make. We are aware that we need to make the concept clearer and the feedback has
helped us know how we could do this, for example making the list of things teenagers do. We now know what the
audience thinks about the video overall and we are very happy with what they said. After making the changes to
the video we want to get more peer feedback to see if they think it has improved.
