Digital Stories
Storytelling has been going on for centuries. It is a
great way to communicate feelings and ideas. We
hear the term “Digital Stories” and can sometimes
become confused. The most important part of the
term is „story‟. The digital aspect makes these stories
more widely accessible and created with many
different kinds of media.
The Internet has taken digital stories onto the
world stage and now makes publishing to the
world a part of students‟ everyday learning.
The World of Digital Stories
I see digital stories as an
opportunity for students to share
their creations with more and
more people.
There are so many kinds of
stories that can be shared
digitally it can sometimes be
hard to know where to begin.

iStopMotion
A great way to get your students excited about creating a
digital story is by using stop-motion animation.
•Stop-motion is the process of taking many photos
of an objects and slightly moving it each time to give
the impression that is moving buy itself.
•I used the program iStopmotion for Mac and iOS
but there are lots of Windows options out there
(Stop-Motion Pro)
iStopMotion
• The process of creating a stop-motion
movie always begins with a planning
session that outlines the basic plot or
information that needs to be
communicated
• I worked with students in small groups
because the process does take some
time to film.
iStopMotion
• Go through the basics of how to use the
software
•How to make a lego character walk
around your scene

Microsoft PowerPoint
• PowerPoint and Keynote are a great start to making
digital stories as most of us are familiar with them in
some way.
• It is easy to introduce an interactive element into the
PowerPoint story by adding hyperlinks onto objects so
that the story can take a different turn.
Apple Keynote
The thunder cracked over his head and the hail
stung his face as he stared into the darkness of the
cave. Should he enter?
Enter
Run away
As he scurried inside the cave he felt the warm,
smelly breath of something near him. Oh no it was
a....
He ran off into the darkness feeling better about
not entering into that cave. What kinds of
creatures would he find on his path through these
woods?
Microsoft PowerPoint Apple Keynote
• Year 5 students were studying Forensic Science and
I asked them to create a digital story that incorporated
the knowledge that they had gained during lessons.
• Once students were shown the basics of hyperlinking
and duplicating pages they were able to set off and
create some great interactive stories.
•It should be about the story, not the technology
