According to the U.S. Census, in 1980 Chicagoland residents between the ages of 18 and 34 were earning $5,000 a year (inflation adjusted) more than that same cohort today. The same data shows that millennials are much more likely to hold a bachelor’s degree and live at home with their parents. In 1980, 28.0 percent of 18 to 34 year olds were living with a parent while today that figure is 35.9 percent. This suggests that the employment market has become more competitive for recent graduates and with lower earnings, millennials have been slower to invest in the housing market.
