In every episode of The PDU Insider I answer one question that we receive from our audience. (that's you... in case you were wondering...) Today's question is this: How does my job as project manager "count" toward earning Professional Development Units (PDUs)? How is this reported and documented?
Here is the answer: PMI offers a large number of categories in which a PMP certified project manager can earn PDUs to re-certify the credential. The one that is probably least known is the fact that simply by working as a project manager you will earn PDUs. To be precise, this is category 2H and PMI defines this as follows: "Practitioner of project and/or program management services for more than 1,500 hours in a calendar year." Let me translate this: If you work as a project or program manager for at least 1,500 hours per year, then you can earn 5 PDUs for each full calendar year. So over the course of your 3-year re-certification cycle you can earn a maximum of 15 PDUs "just" for doing your normal work as a project or program manager. These PDUs are reported and documented in the same way as all other PDUs: You must log on to the PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS) which is located at http://www.pmi.org/ccrs. Once you are logged in click on "Report PDU", select category 2H and follow the on-screen instructions. I recommend that you keep track of the number of hours that you work every year on your projects, have your supervisor confirm the number via a quick email and keep that information in a "PDU folder" just in case that you get audited by PMI. That was today's Ask Cornelius. If you have a question for me then please write to askcornelius @ pdusinsider.com
