This was quite an interesting and eye-opening remark made by the irrepressible Justice Markandey Katju sometime back. I have great regard for the Press Council of India (PCI) chairperson. He always makes us sit up and take notice on issues that matter.

Are 90 percent of Indians really idiots??
Now don’t get me wrong. T hose are not my words. If you have been f ollowing the news in India, you
most probably would’ve heard of Justice Markandey Katju, who is the Press Council of India chairperson
and a f ormer Supreme Court judge. His picture can be seen below.
At a recent seminar, he said, ”I say 90 percent of Indians are idiots. You people don’t have brains in your
heads… It is so easy to take you f or a ride.” Now I have no idea how he arrived at that f igure of 90 per
cent which cannot be true. What I can say is that he isn’t exactly wrong with the idiocy part. So many of
our countrymen have become tools in the hands of power hungry politicians who incite people in the
name of religion and dangerous communal passions. We simply play into their hands as when it comes
to matters of religion every ounce of common sense goes out the window f or our lot. It’s shamef ul and
pathetic!
90 percent of Indians are probably idiots
I have to say I appreciate Justice Katju f or making such a bold statement (still not sure about the 90!) f or
really stirring up the conscience of the common man. I f eel such a bold statement should serve as a
wake-up call f or so many Indians that are so obsessed with their religions that anybody can take them
f or a ride in the name of it.
My appeal to my fellow citizens is to please try and change your mindsets toward your so-
called religious leaders. The last thing these leaders care about is your religion.

T hese leaders only care about themselves and we are simply tools that they use to gain power. We
are conveniently discarded once they get their seats in power…till the next elections, of course. T hen
the whole vicious cycle is renewed. Wake up, India!!! T hink f or yourselves, be smart, and be the best that
you can be…f or yourselves and f or your children. Or else our ignorance will exact a heavy toll on us. I
