of your vinyl records
If you're in your 40s (or older) and you were into music in any way, shape or
form ‘back in the old days’ you probably had a stack of vinyl records.
If so, you probably remember the best way to handle and care for them.
For people of a younger vintage who are new to vinyl records, here are a few
tips on how to care for those 33.3 rpm albums and/or 45 rpm singles.

HANDLING and CLEANING:
1. As with a CD, you want to handle your vinyl records from the edges as to
keep finger prints off the playing surfaces of the record.
Remember, the sweat from your fingers is slightly acidic so, if not cleaned off,
it can permanently mark the vinyl surface.

HANDLING and CLEANING:
2. When cleaning your records it's best to use a lint-free and static-free wet
wipe but you can also use a slightly dampened soft cloth.
Wipe the record lightly because it is a delicate object, and of course you don't
want to push dust and dirt into the record grooves.
Try to avoid creating a build up of static electricity because ‘static’ is a magnet
for attracting dust to your record - and that defeats the purpose of trying to
clean it in the first place.

YOUR TURNTABLE:
1. If you want to get the best sound possible you need to do more than just
keep your records clean. You also need to keep your turntable needle (also
referred to as a ‘stylus’) clean and in good condition.
If the needle is dusty or dull it will negatively affect the quality of the playback
and it can also damage your cherished albums.
The turntable needles are replaceable so it's always a good idea to buy a
replacement or two to keep on hand.

STORAGE:
1. The best way to store your albums is to put them in their dust cover sleeve
and then into their record jacket.
Don't leave your albums out and exposed where they can collect dust and,
since vinyl records are made from flexible plastic, they can be irreparably
damaged by heat and direct sunlight.

STORAGE:
2. Don't lay your albums out flat – for a couple of reasons:
If you lay the records flat and on top of each other they can rub together,
which can cause them to get scuffed up.
When lying flat, even if they are in a record sleeve or jacket, that won't
necessarily protect the playing surface from the impact of dropping
something on it.

STORAGE:
3. Store your records by standing them straight up vertically. Try not to let the
records lean over as that can cause them to warp.

STORAGE:
4. The best type of sleeve to store your vinyl records in is a static-free paper
sleeve. New static-free poly sleeves are also a good choice.

STORAGE:
5. You don't want your prized albums accidentally sliding out of their jackets
and falling to the floor.
To avoid this, place your records in their dust cover sleeves and then insert
the dust cover sleeve into the record jacket so the opening of the dust cover
sleeve is either pointed 'up' towards the top edge of the jacket or ‘in’ and
towards the spine of the record jacket.
