As collections become predominantly digital, the needs for managing and providing access to a library's holdings have changed. As a result, the management practices and workflows librarians employ must also evolve. ProQuest believes it's time for systems to transform by adopting a new model in library automation. - So, it’s time to look at things differently. Address your biggest challenges RIGHT NOW to make the biggest impact. - Modern users are demanding access to content in different ways and this has resulted in a shift in collections libraries are building. This is data from the National Center for Education Statistics and it illustrates the shift from print to electronic in collections. You can see that we have reached the “tipping point” where a small percent of collections budgets are spent on print.. Your print collection is still important, especially as a research collection, but electronic outweighs print in terms of time and priorities for support . You need to focus on your future and transform how you manage your collections. Questions for audience: What percentage of your current acquisitions budget is spent on electronic content? What percentage of you staff time is spent on supporting the management of electronic content? What percentage of your systems budget supports your workflow for electronic materials? Most of your budget is spent on electronic resources Right now, managing electronic resource lifecycle is probably separated from your work with the print collection. Often it is also more work than print – and it should be simple – no need to do physical processing, manage backlogs of physical materials, But systems don’t support electronic resources well so it’s inordinately complex. Without the right systems, libraries need multiple spreadsheets and tracking mechanisms to manage an annual lifecyle. And emerging acquisition models like DDA are another separate workflow, one that you often struggle to support. Discovery and assessment of these electronic materials is increasingly key to how your success is defined. On top of that, users expect, no demand, instant access to materials and one of your goals is to support your users needs. Libraries need a new direction rather than a road that leads them to simply add the new into their old workflows.

- Currently, most libraries don’t have a comprehensive way to examine their collection quantitatively.
