Oral Communication
Title: Using Jazz Chants
Facilitator: Peggy
Time: 10:40 – 11:30
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: (Curriculum/Content Focus):
• Lg. for Communication: listening, speaking, chanting; brainstorming and creating a chant
• Lg and Culture: discussion about the Thai education culture and possibility of creating
chants with students
• Lg and Relationship with Other Areas: depends on subject selected (e.g., animals, daily
routines, taking care of their personal items such as clothes)
Learners’ Quality – Grade 3
Are skillful in using foreign language (w/ emphasis on listening/speaking) to communicate
about themselves, their families, schools, surrounding environment, foods, beverages, free
time, and recreation with vocabulary of around 300-450 words.
Objective: After learning a simple jazz chant and watching a DVD with Carolyn Graham, trainers will
develop one simple chant that they could use for training others. (Options – work individually, with a
partner or small group)
Materials: Jazz Chant DVD for the Training of Trainers; Sample chants to guide development of local
chants to use (creating chants for different grades based on the curriculum or textbooks)
Session Plan:
1. Motivation (P) 1.1 Everyone Participates in Jazz Chant, Give Me a C
1.2 Ask for 5 reactions – put them up on board or flipchart.
2. Presentation 2.1 Watch Part 4 of Carolyn Graham’s Jazz Chant CD. (discuss and decide if
(P) pauses preferred or to watch in full)
2.2 Discuss/Outline what Carolyn Graham did when working w/students
2.3 Discuss childrens’ reactions
3. Practice 3.1 Brainstorm grades, topics, or types of students for which Jazz Chants
(P) could be useful
3.2 Practice developing one short jazz chant (related to curriculum topic)
4. Application (P) 4.1 Invite several participants/groups to perform their chant – encourage
everyone to participate.
4.2 a. Individually Prepare a list of PROs and CONs for using Jazz Chants
b. Ask individuals to put notes on flipchart +/- flipcharts. (+ if on chart)
