The Philippines (“Pilipinas”, “Philippine Islands”, “Las Islas Filipinas” ),
officially known as The Republic of the Philippines
Sovereign country in Southeast Asia in the Western Pacific Ocean
Positioned on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, along the Ring of Fire
Second-largest archipelago on the planet
The 7,107-island archipelago was believed to be inhabited 67,000 years ago
based on recent discovery of the oldest Asia-Pacific remains called Callao Man
Multiple ethnicities and cultures are found throughout the islands,
Austronesian peoples with Malay, Hindu, Chinese and Arabic influences.

Still remaining as top five tourist-generating countries are Korea, USA, Japan, China, and Taiwan.
The Korean market maintained its big lead over the other producers, contributing 1,060,000 visitors
for a share of 23.08% of the total tourist arrivals during 2012 This is a 16.04% increase compared to
last year’s arrivals.
The US market captured 15.64% of the total arrivals or 672,000 visitors, growing at 6.35% compared to
last year’s figures during the same period. Meanwhile, visitors from Japan numbered at 418,000 or
9.11% of the total visitors, an increase of 3.85% from last year.
The fourth and fifth biggest generating markets are China and Taiwan, which consequently got the
biggest double-digit growth rates of 77.53% and 37.49% respectively, comparing to last year’s figures.
China and Taiwan registered 400,000 and 240,000 visitor arrivals this year compared to last year’s
figures respectively.
There are 30,000 Special Resident Retiree’s Visas (SRRVs) have been issued in 2012.
