An introduction to persistency management and the Berkeley DB system.
Introduction to persistency and Berkeley DB
Introduction to persistency and Berkeley DB

The presentation describes a tool for validating and previewing instances of Schema.org JobPosting described in structured data markup embedded in web pages. The validator and preview was developed to assist users of Schema.org to produce data of better quality. In this way, it tries to enhance usability of a part of Schema.org covering the domain of job postings. The paper discusses implementation of the tool and design of its validation rules based on SPARQL 1.1. Results of experimental validation of a job posting corpus harvested from the Web are presented. Among other findings, the results indicate that publishers of Schema.org JobPosting data often misunderstand precedence rules employed by markup parsers and that they ignore case-sensitivity of vocabulary names.

One of the most important components of research is access to quality data. Digital data archives must work to increase submission rates to insure that quality data exist for future researchers. This is a challenge given that recent studies show that vast amounts of data collected during publicly funded projects are not being archived. Even the best-planned methodology will not succeed when researchers use tainted data or fail to find adequate data. Social science data archivists play a key role in the effort to maintain quality sources of data for social science investigators to repurpose and reuse. The dynamic, circular movement of data between the producers and archives is critical to the future of social science research. Data archives have historically provided for this data interchange using considerable human capital. Dedicated archivists and investigators have worked together to ensure that data were processed and placed into an archive best designed for their preservation, a manual process that has become increasingly expensive and unwieldy due to the volume of data being produced and the advanced metadata required to provide future researchers enough details to reuse the study. Typical methods have the researchers working with the archives to deposit the data long after the project has been complete and the papers published. The manual creation of metadata at this point takes far long than if it were collected earlier in the research life cycle. Recent advances in archival repository software may be the key to streamlining this increasingly inefficient archival process by allowing archivist and researchers the ability to create detailed metadata earlier in the research lifecycle at a point where it will take far less time. Software allows researchers greater personal control over archival ingest processes, bridging the gap between researchers and archives and possibly increasing submission rates of valuable data to archives. Archival technology provides tools that manage automated ingest, data cataloging, advanced search and indexing, and rights and access issues. Archival tools also provide proper citation, creation of persistent identifiers, automatic creation of preservation formats, format migration, and statistical analysis of data. Customized branding and citation management can provide investigators collecting these data with a tool that will ensure that they get the credit they deserve. The Dataverse Network Technology has the potential to aid many research groups at UNC in the data management processes and has the potential for use in many disciplines. This presentation will explain the technology and its applicability for managing research data.

For many organisations it has become obvious that knowledge graphs and taxonomies are key elements in order to solve several issues in information and data management. Nevertheless, various methods to develop and maintain those are being discussed and it often remains unclear which of them should be applied. The PoolParty approach (http://www.poolparty.biz/see-how-it-works/) envisages an initial simple taxonomy (based on SKOS) to become more and more extended over time, e.g. by the application of ontologies, rules, graph mappings and linked data harvesting. This gradual approach has turned out to be a more practicable way for most industries in contrast to start with sophisticated ontologies first. This slidedeck also provides a comprehensive overview over the new features of PoolParty version 5. Apart from minor improvements and fixes, users of PoolParty 5 benefit from the following new features and major improvements: . Highly precise entity extraction . Deep integration with SharePoint & Drupal . Fully integrated web crawler . Refined look & feel, and . Full-blown ontology management & semantic reasoning. Find live demos of linked data applications based on PoolParty Semantic Platform. For example, a semantic search application, which is fully based on an RDF graph store and the standards-based query language SPARQL.

Scientists have standardized on the SI unit system since the late 1700’s. While much work has been done over the years to refine and redefine the system, little has formally done to standardize the representation of the SI units in electronic systems. This paper will present a summary of current efforts toward electronic representation of scientific units in text, XML, and RDF, an analysis of needs for current computer/network systems, and an outline of future work.

Web pages increasingly embed structured data in the form of microdata, microformats and RDFa. Through efforts such as schema.org, such embedded markup have become prevalent, with current studies estimating an adoption by about 26% of all web pages. Similar to the early adoption of Linked Data principles by publishers, libraries and other providers of bibliographic data, such organisations have been among the early adopters, providing an unprecedented source of structured data about scholarly works. Such data, however, is fundamentally different from traditional Linked Data, by being very sparsely linked and consisting of a large amount of coreferences and redundant statements. So far, the scale and nature of embedded scholarly data on the Web has not been investigated. In this work, we provide a study on embedded scholarly data to answer research questions about the depth, syntactic and semantic characteristics and distribution of extracted data, thereby investigating challenges and opportunities for using embedded data as a structured knowledge graph of scholarly information.

PoolParty is a world-leading semantic technology platform focusing on standards-based management of taxonomies and ontologies. Its outstanding text mining capabilities based on controlled vocabularies open up new options for masterdata and information management. Try out a powerful thesaurus management system and entity extractor. See how easily knowledge models can be generated with PoolParty, and learn how linked open data can enrich your own thesaurus. Get an impression how simple it is to publish a knowledge model as linked open data and test our text mining component. PoolParty Thesaurus Server (PPT) is an advanced software platform to manage enterprise metadata and linked data based on semantic knowledge models (taxonomies, thesauri, ontologies and knowledge graphs). PPT´s metadata management is based on W3C´s Semantic Web standards RDF, SKOS and OWL and is combined with text mining and linked data mapping technologies. PoolParty´s API (based on W3C´s SPARQL standard) allows the integration of semantic technologies with other systems like search engines, CMS, DMS, web shops or Wikis. In addition, PoolParty Enterprise Server offers outstanding facilities based on PoolParty Extractor that allow text mining over large document collections. PoolParty knowledge modeling approach combines best-of-breed approaches of the semantic web (text corpus analysis, entity extraction, linked data enrichment, SKOS thesaurus management). This enables thesaurus managers to build, maintain and publish even the largest and most complex knowledge models built on top of RDF Schema and SKOS. Application scenarios web-based thesaurus-, vocabulary- and taxonomy-management based on open standards; (semi-)automatic annotation and categorisation of documents with high precision; thesaurus- and linked data publishing on the web and on the intranet (Sharepoint, Confluence etc.) as a basis to build semantic mash-ups; data integration from different sources (structured and unstructured) based on flexible metadata models;

Talk delivered at YOW! Developer Conferences in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney Australia on 1-9 December 2016. Abstract: Governments collect a lot of data. Data on air quality, toxic chemicals, laws and regulations, public health, and the census are intended to be widely distributed. Some data is not for public consumption. This talk focuses on open government data — the information that is meant to be made available for benefit of policy makers, researchers, scientists, industry, community organisers, journalists and members of civil society. We’ll cover the evolution of Linked Data, which is now being used by Google, Apple, IBM Watson, federal governments worldwide, non-profits including CSIRO and OpenPHACTS, and thousands of others worldwide. Next we’ll delve into the evolution of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Open Data service that we implemented using Linked Data and an Open Source Data Platform. Highlights include how we connected to hundreds of billions of open data facts in the world’s largest, open chemical molecules database PubChem and DBpedia. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Data scientists, software engineers, data analysts, DBAs, technical leaders and anyone interested in utilising linked data and open government data.

The current movement toward openness and sharing of data is likely to have a profound effect on the speed of scientific research and the complexity of questions we can answer. However, a fundamental problem with currently available datasets (and their metadata) is heterogeneity in terms of implementation, organization, and representation. To address this issue we have developed a generic scientific data model (SDM) to organize and annotate raw and processed data, and the associated metadata. This paper will present the current status of the SDM, implementation of the SDM in JSON-LD, and the associated scientific data model ontology (SDMO). Example usage of the SDM to store data from a variety of sources with be discussed along with future plans for the work.
