SOCCEREX TRANSFER REVIEW 2016- WINTER WINDOW
 Winter transfers total investment in top 5 European Leagues grew 10% to
427mio€, the second highest amount in history
 Combined investment of summer and winter transfer windows in top 5 European
leagues was almost 3,4bio€, up 29% vs last season and again record high ever
 Premier League was again the dominant force in Europe, investing 43% more
than all other leagues together. SerieA invested 78mio€, followed by Bundesliga
(39mio€, -47%), Ligue1 (32mio€, =) and LaLiga (27m€, -54%)
 Combined season investment by Premier League clubs was again the highest
ever, in excess of 1,4bio€ (+19%). SerieA reached 657mio€, followed by LaLiga
(545), Bundesliga (432) and Ligue1 (335)
 Premier League player sales were down 32% to 90mio€, almost same amount as
Serie A. Atlético last minute Jackson sales takes LaLiga to 67mio€, double vs last year.
Premier League net investment of 143mio€ is a record high, more than doubling
LaLiga spending and eclipsing amounts of any other leagues
CONCLUSIONS STR 2016- WINTER (1 OF 4)
66
 Watford spent more than any other team in Europe. 7 of the top 10 teams in spending
play in the Premier League (none in the top 8), including all 3 teams promoted this
season
 Only 3 top teams (Arsenal, Juventus and Chelsea) made any investment in January.
Bayern and FC Barcelona did not spent any cash on transfer fees for 5th consecutive
winter transfer window
 Atlético reaches 1st position of European ranking after selling Jackson Martínez to
Guangzhou. Chelsea is again in the top 2 in January, topping sales tables for 3nd year in
a row. Porto’s sale of Imbula to Stoke gets it in 3rd position in Europe
 Chelsea is the top club with highest sales activity for 3rd consecutive year, followed at
distance by Inter Milan. Virtually no activity recorded in most top clubs
 Imbula’s signing by Stoke for 24mio€ is the most expensive in Europe, followed by
Everton’s Niasse (18m€). Both signings took place on deadline day. 9 out of 10 most
expensve signings took place in England, including Rhodes by Championship club
Middlesbrough
CONCLUSIONS STR 2016- WINTER (2 OF 4)
67
 Manchester City was the side with highest combined investment (summer + winter) of
season 2015/16 with 200mio€, followed by city rivals ManU (139) and Atletico (139). None
of them spent any money in January
 Winter transfers total investment in EPL grew a whopping 55% to 251mio€, the second
highest amount in history. Total investment of Premier League teams during season
2015/16 (summer + winter) was up another 19% to 1,4bio€, the highest amount in history,
ahead of even more lucrative TV deals from season 2016/17
 27 out of 39 players (69%) signed last winter played more than half of EPL minutes, which
significantly improves last year’s 34%. Crystal Palace was the most active and players
brought in had a decisive contribution on pitch performance (6 out of 7 played regularly).
As much as 17 out of 39 players (44%) signed last winter did not stay at their teams for the
new season
 Watford was the most active EPL team by spending 42m€ in new players (although some
where sent on loan to sister teams). Modest teams top the table, including the 3 promoted
teams on top 5 positions in an attempt to avoid relegation and cash-in on EPL TV
revenues windfall next season
CONCLUSIONS STR 2016- WINTER (3 OF 4)
68
 Stoke’s 24m€ signing Imbula was most expensive signing of the EPL (and Europe),
followed by Everton’s Niasse (both on deadline day). All top 10 signings were conducted
by bottom 12 teams and most are young talent bets after little availability of experienced
and high quality players. Stoke’s Imbula record high signing becomes 10th most expensive
in winter transfer window history
 Chelsea is the driving force of winter transfer window in the last 7 years, monopolizing
both total expenditure (220mio€) and sales (158)
 Premier League sides sold players for just 97mio€ in winter transfer window, which
resulted in highest winter net investment in EPL history (154mio€)
 Up to 8 EPL teams cashed-in from player sales this winter. Chelsea topped the table after
selling Ramires to Chinese side for 28mio€. Swansea (Shelvey) and Tottenham
(Townsend) complete top 3 in player sales income this winter
 Norwich was the most active team in signings by bringing 8 new players, followed by
Sunderland, Bournemouth and Watford (5 each). Manchester sides, Spurs and Aston Villa
were the only sides not signing any players. In terms of player exists, Chelsea (10), and
Manchester sides (9 each) conducted massive number of loans
CONCLUSIONS STR 2016- WINTER (4 OF 4)
69
 44% of players (53 out of 121) that joined Premier League last summer have
played more than half of the minutes. Arsenal, Aston Villa and M.United are the
sides using more intensively the new signings. On the other end: Swansea and
Bournemouth.
 A. Vidal has become the most profitable player from top 10 most expensive of last
summer in Europe. Sterling, De Bruyne and Martial also among most profitable. On
the opposite side, Firmino and Kovacic, has participated in less than 50% of the
minutes
 Sterling, De Bruyne and Martial, being the most profitable signings from top 10
most expensive of last summer. On the opposite side, Firmino and Son, has
participated in less than 50% of the minutes
SUMMARY: ON GOING SEASON REVIEW (1 OF 2)
70
 Chelsea, Tottenham and WBA are the teams with the most stable line-up: 9 of its
players have participated in more than 70% of the minutes. Sunderland and Aston
Villa with only 4 are the teams with the highest rotation of players
 M.United is the team that has fielded most different players for second year in a
row (28). On the other end, WBA and Arsenal only fielded 21 different players
 For 3rd year in a row ManU (7) is still the side fielding the largest number of home
grown players. On the opposite side, Stoke, Watford, Bournemouth and Swansea
are the Premier League teams not having fielded any home grown player
