1. Man's Sewer Ride Missouri: Daniel Collins Survives Mile

A man who took a sewer ride in Missouri is in. Many installed pumps were not originally sourced for
their current function. Very frequently, a line in a company is moved and a pump that at one time
provided cooling fluid to an injection molding machine is now asked to transfer oil from a rail car to
a tank. Sadly, this is the cause of many problems for the pump and the plant. Pumps operate where
the pump curve crosses the system curve. If you move a pump from one system to another, this
means that the system curve is different. This new system may cause the pump to operate away from
its best efficiency point, leading to shaft breakage and other component failures that are merely
symptoms of a mis-matched pump and system.critical condition. The man was swept down a sewer
for more than a mile before he was discovered.
The Missouri man was a city worker named Daniel Collins. Tuesday morning he entered the
Raymore sanitary sewer system and was swept away by rushing water. Crews up top followed the
1.5 mile sewer system, checking manholes and calling out to Collins.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene to help in the search. Take note of
multiple simple changes that may be added to a typical
centrifugal or positive displacement pump. Beginning with pumps containing overhung impellers,
moving to a solid shaft is a easy upgrade instead of the industry standard sleeved shafts. Mechanical
seals are able to be improved upon through tungsten carbide faces, and elastomers are better when
irrigation pump systems replaced with Viton. Finally, magnetic bearing protectors will prove to be a
vast improvement compared to the lip seals which nearly all chemical pumps use to keep bearing
sump oil contamination free.
Antonio Smith, a firefighter, finally heard Collins' screams for help 90 minutes later. They were able
to locate and rescue him. They took him to a local hospital. Collins was 12 feet down the sewer hole.
Daniel Collins is currently in critical condition after being treated for hypothermia. He was also
given antibiotics because of the high possibility that he ingested sewage. It is still unclear how
Collins became unhooked from his harness which he was still wearing when he was rescued.
Fortunately Daniel Collins is safe now. Besides being icky, it must have been a terrifying experience.
Hopefully, the city will be able to figure out what went wrong with Collins harness so that it doesn'
happen again to anyone else.
