CHARACTER EDUCATION

Pat Vandergeest
THESIS

For my senior graduation project I plan on showing
every person how important character education is
and what kind of affects it has on our lives.
WHAT IS IT?

“Character education is the deliberate effort to
develop virtues that are good for the individual
and good for society.”

Dr. Thomas Lickona

http://www.cortland.edu/character/bios.htm

1. \n
2. For my senior graduation project I plan on showing every person how important character education is and what kind of affects it has on our lives.\n\n
3. As defined by Dr. Thomas Lickona, Professor of Education at the State University of New York at Cortland, this means that these virtues should...\n \nhelp human dignity\n\nencourage the well-being and happiness of individuals\n\nserve the common good\n\nstay true to our rights and responsibilities \n\nand answer the questions of would you want to be treated this way? and Would everything be better if everybody acted this way?\n
4. talk about challenge day and maybe put pictures from challenge day and explain you and upper merion.\n
5. Responsibility- being good for your own word and following through with tasks having a sense of commitment, dependability and reliability \n\nPerseverance- accomplishing tasks using determination and patience while owning up to your failures and using them to make you stronger \n\nCaring- Showing understanding of others by treating them with kindness, compassion, generosity and a forgiving spirit\n\nSelf-discipline- Demonstrating hard work controlling your emotions, words, actions, impulses and desires. Giving your best in all situations\n\nCitizenship- Being law abiding and involved in service to school, community and country\n\nHonesty-Telling the truth, admitting wrongdoing. Being trustworthy and acting with integrity\n\n\n
6. Courage- Doing the right thing in face of difficulty and following your conscience instead of the crowd\n\nFairness- Practicing justice, equity and equality. Cooperating with one another. Recognizing the uniqueness and value of each individual within our diverse society\n\nRespect-Showing high regard for an authority, other people, self and country. Treating others as you would want to be treated. Understanding that all people have value as human beings\n\nIntegrity-A firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. Being honest, trustworthy and incorruptible\n\nPatriotism- A love for and loyalty to one's country\n
7. talk about the things brought up at challenge day\n\n-cross the line\n-small group discussions \n-pass the microphone \n\nYou are never alone in this world, no matter what you think, no matter how bad things are, there is always going to either ben somebody who has been through it, seen it, has it happening to them, or is willing to give you the time needed to help.\n
8. the School Board of Broward County, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has adopted eight character traits, one for each month: \nCooperation (September)\nResponsibility (October)\nCitizenship (November)\nKindness (December)\nRespect (January)\nHonesty (February)\nSelf-control (March)\nTolerance (April)\n\nThey have posters about character education hanging around the school to remind the kids\n\nReward the kids when they show the traits and take time to recognize them normally a pencil of sticker\n\nPicture in background is from Lebanon in Missouri. Signs are posted around the school to remind the kids of the traits of character education\n\nPublic schools seem a little more loose compared to private schools, not as forceful \n
9. More strict with their programs, it seems like they force it upon kids in hopes that it will work\nThe Swain School in Allentown, PA\nEach month, a different virtue is highlighted with special activities, writing opportunities, all-school assemblies, and 'teachable moments'. \n2010-2011 are tolerance/acceptance, forgiveness, thankfulness, reverence, justice, loyalty, perserverance, stewardship, and peacefulness.\nBirthday Groups - where everyone (students, staff, and faculty) - born in a particular month meet for activities and fellowship. These relationships promote a special kind of bond among our students, building leadership and friendship.\nSwain School Eight grade Community Service Project.\nKids in eighth must spend eight hours of community service on 1 project and present it to the school in a media format. Kind of like on SGP in 8th grade\nTown meeting\nstudents meet with teachers and talk about the community of the school and sometime guest speakers come in. This is supposed to build relationships between the kids and the teachers\nWellness class- basically like teen issues \ncurriculum is designed around the developmental needs of emerging adolescents, and includes such topics as decision making, healthy food choices, sex education, etc.\n\n
10. females suffer from depression more than males\n\nmales are less likely to seek help due to the whole “no emotion” factor\n\n2/3 of teens suffer from another mental disorder, most commonly dysthymia.\n\n\n
11. risky sexual behavior such as multiple partners or unprotected sex\n\ndepresses teens catch physical illness easier than others\n\ndepression causes teens to be 12 times more likely to kill themselves\n\n80% of depressed teens can be treated even though only 33% actually look for help\n
12. \n
13. In a class of 25, 5 kids have thought of killing themselves and at least 2 have attempted. \n\nstatistics show that female teens are more likely to think about killing themselves but males are 4 times more likely to actually do it\n\none teenager kills themselves almost every five minutes meaning at the end of this presentation around 6 kids our age will have died.\n\n\n
14. teens are more likely to kill themselves if there are guns in their home and they have access to them and majority of the time they will kill themselves in their own homes.\n\n1/3 teen suicides have tired before actually succeeding\n\n90% of suicidal teens had suffered from depression or had problems with alcohol/drug abuse\n\nSuicide is said to have a genetic component, meaning if you have a close relative with thoughts of suicide then that makes you more likely to have the thoughts as well\n\nsuicide prevention lifeline serves over 45,000 callers a month\n\n
15. \n
16. \n
17. \n
