Virtualizatie: de 'big picture'

2. Virtualisatie: op weg naar modernere
infrastructuur?
De belangrijkste business redenen voor
virtualisatie:
– Mobiliteit
– Flexibiliteit
– Resilience
=> Meer bruikbare IT, minder risico
tijdens upgrades.
5. Flexibiliteit
Servers en applicaties kunnen sneller worden
uitgerold
Gebruikers worden sneller voorzien van applicaties
Kortere doorlooptijden, meer mogelijkheden
6. Resilience
Beter bestand tegen technische verstoringen en
overbelasting
– Workload migration
– Fail over, high availability
7. IT as a utility

Verschillende virtualisatie gebieden
All: shared capacity => need for capacity
management
9. Virtualizatie features leiden tot
business voordelen
• Server
– Resource sharing
– Live migration
– High availability
– Snapshots
– Load balancing
– Storage migratie
• Storage
– Resource sharing
– Thin provisioning
– De-duplication
– Live migration
• Maar waar heb je nu precies de redundancy?
– Redundant server cluster, RAID, SAN mirroring?
10. Uitdagingen
• Met storage virtualisatie wordt de performance
van de onderliggende hardware niet vanzelf
zichtbaarder
• Virtuele servers geven virtuele workloads? Hoe
belasten die de virtuele storage? Relatie tussen
workload en hardware wordt complexer en meer
fluide.
• Ondoordachte redundantie vergroot het
capaciteitsbeslag met een factor 2*2*2 …
• Multi vendor beleid in hardware: wiens tools
gaan het beheren?

Gevirtualiseerde
infrastructuren hebben ook
nieuwe risico’s
– Concentratie risico’s
– Capaciteitsbeheer risico’s
– Technology risico’s
15. Voor maximale resultaten zijn stevige inspanningen nodig

All types of virtualization are underpinned by common management tools and processes. These types have the following traits in common:All aspects of systems management must account for virtualization. Not only must the chosen set of virtualization technologies itself be managed as a platform, but the enterprise tools associated with monitoring, provisioning, incident and problem management, inventory management, and software development and releases must all be integrated to ensure that they work well in a virtual environment.Although it is possible to treat virtual infrastructure as if it were only physical infrastructure and not change the organization’s way of working, this eliminates much of the benefits of virtualization in the first place. Adopting a new, virtual, infrastructure operating model is critical to achieve Return on Investment (ROI).
In an initial state – Siloed – IT is dispersed over the organization. Virtualization is a way to bring all these components together on a consolidated platform for processing, storage, and networking. In a consolidated state, there is a high level of hardware standardization. The next progression is to integrate the components so that it becomes possible to fluidly move virtual resources over the physical assets. In the unified state, physical assets such as storage, processing, and networking are interchangeable, which highly increases the flexibility of IT. With all this in place, it becomes possible to automate resource re-allocation, leading to a set of almost amorphous computing services. The last step, then, is the introduction of elastic, customer-driven, self-service provisioning leading to a cloud of services that totally hides the underlying physical hardware.
