Testosterone is responsible for male secondary sex characteristics, reproductive organ growth, sperm production, muscle building, metabolism, immunity, and overall health and well-being in both men and women.

Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone, and it also plays an essential role in women’s overall health and wellness. This naturally occurring steroid hormone is found in mammals, reptiles, birds and other vertebrates. Home to the ‘Androgen Group’, testosterone contributes to the growth of male sex organs and the development of sex characteristics. History Of Testosterone 1849 - Arnold Adolph Berthold, a German physiologist and zoologist, pioneered experiments in endocrinology. Berthold’s research was primarily directed towards the gonads and their role in sexual characteristics. In 1849, Berthold performed a groundbreaking experiment with chicken castration. Berthold’s discovered that testicular action was correlated to circulating blood fractions - now known as the androgen hormone family. 1889 - A Harvard professor, Charles Édouard Brown Séquard, extracted a “rejuvenating elixir” from dog and guinea pig testicles. Then, at 72 years of age, he self injected the extracted elixir before reporting that his vigor and feeling of well being were restored. “I have made use, in subcutaneous injections, of a liquid containing a very small quantity of water mixed with the three following parts: First, blood of the testicular veins; secondly, semen; and thirdly, juice extracted from a testicle crushed immediately after it has been taken from a dog or guinea-pig.” - Séquard Over the months of May through June of 1889, Séquard injected himself ten times with this elixir. He reported being able to work on his feet for hours at a time. He also said he could run up the stairs to his lab. Objective tests also proved that his arm strength had increased by a significant amount. However, after suffering plenty of ridicule from his colleagues, Séquard abandoned his research on the effects of androgens. * This wasn’t the only experiment Séquard performed on himself. Séquard also swallowed a sponge attached to a string to investigate the digestive fluids within the stomach. He was interested in what caused “rumination,” a digestive problem that caused partially digested food to come back up into the mouth to be chewed and swallowed again.

Testosterone is the most well-known androgen hormone. However, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT and androstenedione are less known, but of equal importance in male development). Testosterone’s Role In Development Testosterone is essential in pre-birth development, puberty and continues to play a critical role in your overall health and welness throughout your entire life. Let’s start at the beginning. How Testosterone Affected You Before You Were Born While your XX Chromosomes (if you’re female) or XY Chromosomes (if you’re male) formed in the womb, they determined your chromosomal sex. Your chromosomal sex determines gonadal sex, which is the sex that will be apparent as your sex organs develop and mature. Men: The presence of your Y chromosome induced the formation of your testicles. Two hormones most important to this process are testosterone and anti-Mullerian hormone (a hormone that suppresses the growth of female sex organs). Both of these essential hormones were produced by your testes. Masculinization results from the ability of testosterone to induce male genitals and secondary male sex characteristics. Women: The absence of your Y chromosome allowed you to follow your female developmental pathway. Interestingly, from a genetic standpoint, femaleness is the default setting, because no specific hormones are required for the formation of female genitalalia. Your determined sex organs will secreted essential hormones during your early childhood development. Specific Prenatal Androgen Effects At Two Developmental Stages: 1. Gestation (between 4-6 weeks): Genital Virilization: Androgens; Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone determined midline fusion, phallic urethra, scrotal layers and vaginal rugation. Prostate and vesicular gland development A surge in testosterone causes the male genitalia to develop and causes specific areas of the male brain to develop. An absence of testosterone causes the fetus to remain female (the default sex). 2. Second Trimester (Weeks 13-19): Sexual Differentiation Of The Brain: This stage determines the feminization or masculinization of the baby. Interestingly, the mother’s testosterone levels during the second trimester are a better predictor of her daughter’s behavior than the daughter’s own adult testosterone levels. Testosterone is the primary sex hormone and anabolic steroid in males. In male humans, testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle and bone mass, and the growth of body hair. Testosterone is a sex hormone that plays important roles in the body. In men, it's thought to regulate sex drive (libido), bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm. A small amount of circulating testosterone is converted to estradiol, a form of estrogen. If a male has a low level of testosterone, the symptoms can include erectile dysfunction, and reduced bone mass and sex drive. The hormone has many important functions, including: the development of the bones and muscles. the deepening of the voice, hair growth, and other factors related to appearance. Men with high testosterone can experience a variety of troubling symptoms and possible health consequences. Excess testosterone can lead to more aggressive and irritable behavior, more acne and oily skin, even worse sleep apnea (if you already have it), and an increase in muscle mass.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
