The phases of the moon are caused by the changing positions of the moon relative to the Earth and sun. As the moon revolves around Earth, the portion of the sunlit side facing Earth varies, appearing as different shapes from crescent to full. Over 29.5 days, the moon completes its cycle from new moon, where the sunlit side faces away from Earth, to full moon when the entire sunlit side is visible, then back to new moon again.
