2. At the start of the course I had very little knowledge of the software or equipment I would be using through the
year. However, I surprised myself with how quickly I picked it up with the help of the teachers and the rest of the
group which then allowed me to play a more active role during the production process. But digital technology
helped us capture our ideas in media production for instance, the cameras were able to help us capture imagery
such as a close up shot of our protagonists face to highlight her facial expression. However, we did experience
some limitations through the fact that the cameras weren’t great quality hence, they hindered some of our ideas
during the production process. For example, we planned to have a long shot looking into a window but, we were
unable to use this due to the cameras incapability's.
Alternatively, digital technology allowed us to be creative particularly through the editing process. This is because
we were able to add a variety of transitions and non-diegetic sound which brought our whole piece together. For
example, the editing process highlighted to us that it might be effective to add in a sound effect over the flashback
to link to our genre, and overall this greatly improved our work.
Personally, I would also say that digital technology was very useful and influential in the post-production process
because it allowed us to think more carefully about transitions, titles and sequence. It also highlighted to us to use
sound effects which helped us to be more creative.
Benefits Disadvantage
Professional editing software allowed for
creativity.
No access to certain equipment e.g. 3 point
lighting system – limited the quality of our
work.
Allowed us to learn a variety of new skills. Bad quality camera made some shots difficult
and unrealistic.
Taught us to work in a team and share
responsibilities in terms of being responsible
for equipment and safety.
Moving the camera sometimes caused a
problem and made filming a smooth pan or tilt
rather difficult.
