2. GENRE
It is clear from the trailer that Safe Haven
has a predominantly Romantic genre, due
to the fact that it revolves around a
woman and her growth
and
reestablishment in a new town due to the
help of her male love interest. However it
could also be said that the film has
elements of the drama genre as there is
the idea that the woman is running from
someone, as an audience member we do
not know what, however when we see a
detective trying to trace her down and a
house on fire, we can assume that there
are definite dramatic elements to the film.
3. NARRATIVE
Surrounds the life of a woman who is
running from her past. She finds temporary
sanctuary and peace in a small quiet sea
side town, and begins developing a
romantic relationship with a local man who
had lost his wife a few years previous. Her
life begins to find a bit of stability, making
friends, finding a job and spending time
with the man and his two children.
However a detective who is trying to track
her down, soon finds her, and turns her
new world upside down, putting her and
those close too her in danger.
4. UNIQUE SELLING POINT
• Audience is unaware of what is going
on the entirety of the trailer, instead of
being in the know of what it is exactly
that the woman is running from, the
audience is left to guess what exactly
happened in her past life. However
you are still supporting her and hoping
that it turns out for the best, despite
her being tracked down by a detective,
you are still rooting for her. Essentially
the USP of the trailer is that through
the deceit of the audience, they are left
wanting to know what happens.
5. TARGET AUDIENCE
Through the trailer, it is clear that the
audience is female, given that films of a
romantic genre are often directed toward
them. However additionally the fact that the
main character is female, therefore more
relatable is another factor that the target
audience is that of the female gender.
In terms of age the audience is likely going
to be older, possibly mid teen – mid
thirties/forties. Any younger and I feel they
would not fully understand the reasoning
behind characters actions and any older may
not be as accepting of the plot line or may
see it as being too dramatic or „trashy‟.
6. MUSIC
The music in the trailer is a version of
„Go Your Own Way‟ by an artist
called Lissie. The song is slow paced
to begin with before speeding up in
tempo, this really adds to the contrast
between the lighthearted and dramatic
moments of the trailer. The lyrics of
the song also have elements that relate
to the movie, the idea of doing things
on your own grounds and fighting for
independence. A link to this music is
uploaded below in this post.
7. POPULAR SHOT TYPES/ANGLES
• There is a multitude of long shots and establishing shots in the trailer
which draws attention to the environment. This is particularly important
when you consider the town is not only new to the main female
protagonist, but also the audience. These shots really give them an idea of
where they are.
• Over the shoulder shots are also common and this gives the audience the
feeling as if they are actually a part of the situation or the person who is
speaking. It also gives a good view of the other persons emotions. This is
used predominantly in the trailer as a way of insight in the two main
characters getting to know each other.
• There are also a number of close ups which also helps show the emotions
and reactions of the characters, particularly during dramatic or high
intensity moments.
9. PACE
In general the trailer is relatively fast paced
from the beginning, from where the female
protagonist is running from the detective
to the end where the real high intensity
action begins to kick in. However in the
middle it could be argued that through the
settling in the new town, the trailer does
lose pace so that the audience too can feel
that feeling of familiarity and contentment.
10. DIALOGUE/VOICEOVER
There is no voiceover in the trailer that
comes from an inside source, a lot of
the dialogue overlaps some scenes
however it is continuous therefore could
not be considered a voiceover. There is
dialogue included, such as conversations
between the main female and male and
with others. This dialogue gives a bit
more of a general idea of the plot, such
as running away from the past or the
fact that the male lost his wife a few
years previous.
“Did you hear about his wife?”
“Somewhere that I don‟t really
want to go back to”
11. CREDITS AND INTERTITLES
There is a series of credits, crediting the
original author (the film being an adaption
of the book) as well as crediting the
institutions, main actor, crew and
companies
that were involved in the
making of the film. In terms of intertitles
there are a series of title pages that explain
more about the film with what the audience
can assume is the slogan of the film “It‟s
not what you‟re running from, It‟s what
you‟re running too”. There is also a title
page, giving information regarding the
release month of the film.
