“Sharing Data” Tools ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Bluepedia is IBM‘s global intranet encyclopedia, co-authored by IBMers for IBMers (comparable to Wkipedia) WikiCentral is designed to facilitate the exchange of information within and between teams. Content in a wiki can be updated without real lag, without administrative effort and without the need for distribution – users/ contributors visit and update a common Web site. IBM Redbooks are developed and published by IBM's International Technical Support Organization. The ITSO develop and deliver skills, technical know-how and materials to technical professionals of IBM, Business Partners and clients.    Dogear is a set of social bookmarking tools that you can use to save, organize and share internet and intranet bookmarks. In a work environment, it is a great way to share expertise. Dogear provides tools for scanning for information about a book-mark or about the bookmark owner, giving you the means to connect with people who have similar interests or the expertise you need. See highlights below. Cattail is a web site where you can upload files and share them with other colleagues. It was designed to provide significant advantages over email when doing "ad-hoc" sharing of files. Podcast is a series of digital media file (audio or video) posted on a website that can be downloaded and played later. Often syndicated to registered interested parties via RSS. Maybe you want to show off your best pictures to the whole IBM world in a bid for web celebrity. Flickr makes all these things possible! It is a photo sharing application. The Media Library has replaced the Podcasting Pilot as the destination for media within IBM. Some of the motivators for using the tool are: Podsmart is designed to create personalised content (e.g. emails, news feeds, music) for your digital audio player. Use PodSmart to arrange your preferred mix of business and personal content. Advantages of the tool: Lotus Quickr is a software helping you to access the people, information and project materials you need to get the job done. provides online team spaces where members can share and collaborate, and use team calendars, discussion forums, blogs, wikis and other collaboration tools for managing projects and creating content.

It shares ideas within the entire company. Even if employees don't have an idea to post, they can look around, collaborate, rate others' ideas, or find ideas for their own use. Innovators Library is a kind of library for developers. It provides one location for developers to find resources, projects, services, code, and other developers with similar interests. Today teams are spread out across several departments and countries. We increasingly work from home, and collaborating with other IBMers we have not ever physically met is common. IBMr will help you to build your reputation and share it the way you want. BlueIQ is an initiative driven by SWG that focuses on how we can best leverage our social software offerings. A key goal is to establish IBM as the showcase for the business benefits of social software. BlueReach helps you find experts for immediate advice and consultation. The experts you contact using BlueReach have agreed to answer any and all questions regarding their areas of specialization. An e-meeting (= web conference) is any meeting involving participants who are not all in the same place. It provides shared visuals, and are used along with an audio conference ("teleconference"). FYI: SWAN is a question-and-answer solution for inquiries on SWG products. It provides the sales force with on demand access to software brand and cross-brand information and expertise. Benefits: PassItOn is ... Many Eyes is a bet on the power of human visual intelligence to find patterns. Our goal is to "democratize" visualization and to enable a new social kind of data analysis. The research group explores information visualizations that help people collectively make sense of data. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
“Social Networking” Tools Forums is a company-wide database for sharing and discussing non-confidential information concerning IBM's business. CommunityMap is an index of existing communities within IBM. BlogCentral is a place to publish your information and ideas onto IBM's intranet. Also, blogging allows others to comment on your ideas, sparking debates and the creating of informal communities around specific topics. Blogging is also a way to identify others in IBM working on similar projects in separate parts of the company. NotesBuddy is designed to tie together e-mail, instant messaging, awareness, and directory. The lightweight tool announces important new messages by voice, pager, or display. It integrates IM and buddy status with e-mail to give users a single messaging tool. CorporateCola is a Social Networking system that brings transparent and secure information sharing to Notes and Sametime within IBM. The project focuses on expertise location and expertise awareness. SOcial Network ARchitecture is an architecture for retrieving and sharing social network data in an organization and aggregating it across applications. SONAR extracts information on who's connected to whom, with what strength, and based on what evidence. Fringe is a web application to help users find, connect with, and maintain relationships with others. It leverages features from social networking applications, Bluepages and address books to accomplish these goals. BlueTwit is a micro-blogging tool that lets you post short messages (140 characters). It’s like sending an open text message to the world. Lotus Sametime is IBM‘s instant messaging tool. Benefits: Metaverse is a 3D virtual world running inside IBM's firewall. It provides a visual environment that allows you to interact with objects and other people real-time. You can conduct virtual meetings, conferences, build communities, and countless other fun activities. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Project Bluegrass creates a virtual-world environment where software developers can work, chat and brainstorm. 1. URL to Innovation Ecosystem w3 page: http://w3.ibm.com/articles/workingknowledge/2008/02/cemaas_innoeco.html IBM's most popular social software tools, both inside and outside of the corporate firewall. Today's intranet, internet and Web 2.0 technologies are helping change the way organizations and individuals collaborate, solve problems, and innovate. A cultural change is under way as well, now that individuals have an unprecedented ability to participate in multiple communities and serve multiple roles in those communities. So how do we use these new resources effectively?
  2. WikiCentral: Teamrooms have the following advantages over wikis : are sometimes better for sensitive information intended for a limited audience, due to very strong security and encryption features, let you easily assign activities and tasks, can send out action items, are good for managing a large body of knowledge (procedures, data etc) that relatively few people create and where the primary mode of access is directly to individual documents, are good for storing large files or large amounts of data, can easily be copied to a local disk for offline usage and therefore does not require access to the IBM network, have a relatively long and well-established history at IBM, so may be more familiar to some users. Wikis have the following advantages over Teamrooms : are usable intuitively, as most people understand how to browse and search a website, are much better when you are trying to create something collaboratively as a team, are easily searchable if you want to find something quickly, are good if you have a lot of information that you want team members to discover and absorb, have the ability to include dynamic content such as RSS and voting, have strong usability features (e.g. when you rename a page, all links to that page update automatically), enable more flexible access control, such as setting permissions for a tree of pages rather than managing access for each individual page, provide hierarchical page views; it is easy to go from comment to parent document, have better addressability of individual documents via a meaningful shorter URL, can be exported to a local file, but this cannot be scheduled via replication automatically as easily. Cattail: When you share a file with someone, Cattail sends the recipient an email. If you upload a new version of a given file, Cattail will inform all of the past recipients of a file that a new version is available for upload. Cattail provides a dashboard view of recent activity around your files and those of your colleagues. Each file has a permanent “home page” on Cattail, where people can view a thumbnail of supported file types (images, PDFs, Powerpoint decks, Word documents, et al.), leave comments, download the file, and share it with interested parties. You can also see who has downloaded the file, and who has added it to their named collections of interesting files. The URL of this home page never changes, even when you’ve uploaded a new version. Any file that’s public, or that has been shared with you explicitly, can be found via full-text search. Dogear : Dogear exploits the enterprise by allowing people to bookmark pages within their Intranet. In addition it uses enterprise directories to authenticate the user's identity. This allows people to find experts on specific topics within the company. For example, a employee looking for someone knowledgeable in Java can look at the dogear "java" tag to see who has been bookmarking pages around that topic. Dogear will also show tags associated with "java," which may help to refine the search. Once users have found a potential expert, they can see that person's bookmarks, internal blog, and contact information. This form of expertise location helps spur collaboration and sharing of resources within the company. Collected bookmarks are stored in a central repository so that you can share them with others, and see other collections of bookmarks Some highlights of Dogear include: - A central spot for storing and organizing bookmarks - A way to publish some or all of your bookmarks so that others can see your collection - Tags that let you identify bookmarks with a keyword that you choose. Tags make searching for and sharing bookmarks easier. - Authentication with an enterprise directory to provide boundaries to the social network - Contact information provided about bookmark owners so that you can locate and connect with other users Collaboration scenario Suppose you work in the Finance group and are looking for a person knowledgeable about microcredit. You can search Dogear for tags such as "economics," "microcredit," "lending," and "small_business." If you find a match, you can scan the list of bookmarks and the people who have posted the bookmarks. After you identify a person who has created several bookmarks related to microcredit, you can review that person's bookmarks and also get contact information and links to other Lotus Connections services associated with that user. This form of expertise location encourages collaboration and sharing of resources within your company. Dogear overview, hot-tos, FAQs: http://dogear.tap.ibm.com/help/doc/en/frame.html Podsmart: In 2006 one of the projects of the IBM Extreme Blue programme was called PodSmart. The business student researched and identified a market opportunity amongst the rapidly increasing ownership of personal audio players.  PodSmart was envisaged to provide a novel approach to utilising a personal audio player as a tool for listening to both business and personal audio content.  PodSmart was designed to allow users (such as commuters) to generate podcasts or audio programs. Personal audio programs could contain a personal mix of emails, RSS news feeds, calendar appointments and even tracks from a music library. A robust prototype application was developed which was highly acclaimed at the Extreme Blue Exposition and also when further demonstrated at conferences such as LotusSphere 2007. Wanting to build on the success of the Extreme Blue PodSmart Project, the Dublin Software Lab initiated a similarly styled programme. The aim was to encourage existing software engineers to get involved with such new innovative projects. The Dublin Innovation Projects PodSmart initiative was begun in September 2007 and a small group of software engineers took time away from their normal projects to work on re-designing and enhancing the PodSmart application. PodSmart has now been developed into a very professional piece of software that has been re-incarnated as an IBM Lotus Notes 8 plug-in. It now integrates seamlessly within a Notes 8 client and provides very flexible and powerful facilities for mixed audio content generation.  Powerful drag and drop enhancements make it easy to add documents, emails, text files, music files etc. Scheduling features allow users to auto-generate podcasts and have them prepared for synchronising with audio devices. PodSmart has been re-architected in such a modular way that it is simple to replace or write custom input, conversion and output modules. For example it is possible to replace the text to speech conversion engine with another preferred vendor for different speech quality, or to add another converter to translate emails from English to German before converting to speech.
  3. http://w3.webahead.ibm.com/medialibrary/media_set_view?id=3931 w3 Innovators Library: IBM has over 70,000 developers. This is a huge development force, especially when developers are able to benefit from the collective knowledge of the development community. Imagine if even one out of ten developers submitted an example of how to solve a common programming problem. Suddenly, we would have a huge collection of best practices to draw from, as well as examples of how to use software that might not be used external to IBM. BlueIQ: https://w3-03.ibm.com/software/marketing/marksite.nsf/AllMarketingPages/Web_Marketing-wm_biq?opendocument IBM has the richest set of social software in the market and every IBM employee has information to share and information to glean. Leveraging our own social software to build social networks will accelerate enablement and skills building across and within all functions in IBM -- sales, marketing, development, support, services, and HR. Social networking can also be used to help make our sales teams more productive. We can all become members of BlueIQ as we collectively build a better IBM. We will be looking to help you to your job better using our tools. This is not about our software for software's sake. This is about addressing our business problems and establishing SWG as the showcase for the benefits of social computing. Although I'll be working closely with the Lotus team, sales enablement and our IT organization, every IBMer in SWG will be a part of the team ... a part of the BlueIQ. I'd ask you to join us in BlueIQ and to share our success stories with coworkers, clients, and partners. It is important that we "drink our own champagne" and put priority on using our own offerings like Lotus Connections, Quickr, SameTime as well as use, where appropriate, emerging tools & technologies. Many Eyes: History In 2003, Fernanda created a program to visualize an individual's email archives. Given the personal nature of email, when she ran a study on the visualization she took great pains to ensure that each person's visualization would be completely private. But to her surprise, many of the study participants immediately sought out ways to share the images, mailing screenshots around or just calling friends over to see the program in action. This experiment revealed the intensely social side of visualizations, where discussion and storytelling are just as important as data analysis. The next year, Martin wrote a program to visualize historical baby name popularity. It became a minor internet fad, but what was most interesting was the discussions that it sparked. In venues ranging from blogs to a forum on a well-known political magazine, thousands of people used the visualization as a starting point for conversations that were sometimes playful, sometimes intensely analytical. Each brought a distinctive perspective to the data, from a knowledge of political history to a simple search for their own name. Inspired by these experiences, the Visual Communication Lab embarked on a project to encourage sharing and conversation around visualizations. We believe that visualizations gain power when multiple people use them to communicate, and that communication gains power when multiple people can visualize and explore information together. We want to democratize visualization, enabling anyone on the internet to publish powerful interactive visualizations and start their own data conversations. Many Eyes is designed to bring that power to you. Our lab was created in 2004 by Martin Wattenberg , whose life goal is to turn numbers into pictures. Since then the lab has grown to include an eclectic group of researchers and developers. Jesse Kriss is not only a developer but a musician and DJ known for his visualizations of sampling and scratching. Fernanda Viégas , visualization virtuoso and graphic designer, came to IBM from the MIT Media Lab. Frank van Ham , massive dataset master and graph drawing guru, as well as the only Dutchman on the team, came from the Eindhoven University of Technology. And developer Matt McKeon , the only one from our team to have experienced the power of visualization in a war zone, came from Georgia Tech.
  4. Sonar: As the electronic world becomes more socially oriented (Web 2.0), many organizations are looking into social technologies to promote collaboration among their employees. Countless sources for valuable social network information exist inside and outside an organization, and can be used to derive and exploit an organization's social network. These sources can be public, such as blogs, wikis, and bookmarking systems, or private, such as email or instant messaging systems. Once the social network has been identified, organizations can use it for expertise location, collaboration, extended employee profiles, etc. SONAR currently aggregates data from the following IBM sources: Lotus Notes email and calendar Lotus Sametime chats Lotus Connections Blogs Lotus Connections Bookmarks IBM internal profiles (Blue pages) IBM internal People Tagging and friending system Lotus Connections Activities Lotus Connections Communities Lotus Connections Atlas IBM internal wikis site IBM Patents and Disclosures database IBM Publications database SONAR lets users ask questions such as: Who does a person communicate with most? What are all the artifacts co-authored by two individuals? Who should I consult with regarding a certain topic? What relates me to a person? Who is similar to a person? Who shares similar interests? BlueTwit: http://w3.ibm.com/news/w3news/top_stories/2008/06/uknews_bluetwit.html At the moment, to access BlueTwit, you will need to use the Firefox web browser, which is available on ISSI . Metaverse: For those of you that are familiar with Second Life, Metaverse is very similar. However, Metaverse is different in some key ways: Easier to use - Simpler interface provides critical operational functionality without a steep learning curve Higher Fidelity - Using the Torque engine, objects and physics are rendered at a higher level of quality, which makes for a more realistic environment Internally Hosted - Allows us to discuss confidential business in this space Lower Workstation Requirements - Works well on older Thinkpads all the way up to today's rocket ship Macs and Lenovo machines Model Import - Models can be designed and rendered in your favorite 3D modeling program and imported into the world. (using the Metaverse SDK, coming soon!) This allows for platform independent object reuse. Here are some 3D tools that have been tested with Metaverse: Maya, 3D Studio Max, Milkshape, Blender, SketchUp, QuArK, Cartography Shop, and Poser We have many goals for Metaverse; here are some of the highlights: Metaverse Services - Services that unify and integrate data and tooling across multiple Metaverse platforms. This allows us to develop for Metaverse but allow our data and mashups to be used in other 3D engine platforms Environmental Simulation - Mapping real-world statistical data to a visual that can be experienced virtually. Proximity VOIP - Voice chat based on your location inside Metaverse Dynamic Learning Environment - A persistent learning space for conducting classes, outfitted with games and interesting interfaces. CorporateCola: In the 2.0 release, CorporateCola takes shape of a Sametime 7.5.1 plugin, which users download and install. The plugin indexes their email and chat communications, to the degree that the user wishes to do so, and then optionally transmit the indexed information to the central public repository, where it can be used to perform expertise and social networking searches. The Cola Sametime 7.5 plugin provides its users with an enhanced buddylist manager, which automatically includes their top contacts, organizes them into the topics, and allows for keyword people lookups. Cola 2.0 is now officially launched, and is currently limited to US regular IBMers. It is also strictly opt-in. Give Cola a spin and let us know what you think!
  5. Technology Adoption Program: Why should you join TAP? - To be a part of a community working to change how innovation is embraced at IBM - To provide something new to people who are willing and eager to try it - To access technology early - and provide feedback on your experience
