Positive Attitudes During Tough
              Times
         Presented by Jan Baller
       Owner—POTENTIAL PLUS+
What is Emotional Intelligence?
• The ability to sense, understand, and intelligently apply the power
of EMOTIONS as a source of human energy, information, and
  influence.

• Emotional Intelligence requires that we learn to ACKNOWLEDGE
AND VALUE FEELINGS in ourselves and others

• That we appropriately respond to them, effectively applying the
POWER of EMOTIONS in our daily life and work.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
From Executive EQ by Robert Cooper and ayman Sawaf

• Knowing how you and others FEEL and what to do
  about it

• Knowing what feels GOOD, what feels BAD, and how to
  get from BAD TO GOOD!
Emotions are Raging in the Workplace Today
• What emotions are people feeling?
Attitude Management
• Attitude is a function of FOCUS.

• To manage your attitude, you have to CHOOSE to focus on the
  POSITIVES.

• Focus on the good in yourself
• Focus on the good in your job
• Focus on the good in others
• Focus on the good in every situation.

• How can we help our people focus on the positives?
The Secret of
                Attitude Management
• Attitude is a mindset, or a system of beliefs

• Attitude comes from WITHIN

• Specifically, it comes from the way we WAY WE
  PROCESS INFORMATION

• What causes you to lose your positive attitude?
The Secret of
                          Attitude Management
 • This is the process that produces my attitude!
                                 EXPERIENCE

KEY INTERPRETATION SELF-TALK

                                    EMOTION

                                   REACTION

We can’t control events in our life, but we can control how we interpret events, and in
that way we control the most important controllable—our attitude. In terms of emotional
intelligence, this is how we produce/control the emotions we feel
The Secret of Attitude Management
IN TOUGH TIMES, WE HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY DISCIPLINED ABOUT OUR
                            SELF-TALK

WE HAVE TO MANAGE OUR OWN ATTITUDES SO WE’LL BE POSITIVE UNDER
                         PRESSURE

                 EMOTIONS ARE CONTAGIOUS
EMPLOYEES ARE WATCHING TO SEE HOW WE’RE FEELING AND HOW WE
                       HANDLE THINGS

PRACTICE BY PLAYING THE BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS GAME
PRACTICE IN ATTITUDE MANAGEMENT
• Things that tend to make me negative, or stressed, or angry:

• The bad news is:

• But the good news is:

• The bad news is:

• But the good news is:
ATTITUDE SHAPER OR ATTITUDE REFLECTOR?
• ATTITUDE SHAPER • ATTITUDE REFLECTOR
• Manages their attitude • Picks up and mirrors negative
• Remains positive even when attitudes around them
others are not • Becomes negative if others
• Is able to find the good news become negative
when no one else can • Voices the concerns of their
• Influences others positively team, but does nothing to
• Leaders are attitude shapers influence a more positive
                                      viewpoint
Group Exercise
• Please brainstorm and create a list:

• What are people in your group negative about?

• Next, work with your team and set up some team ground rules to maintain
  “Positivity”

• Work with your table to write ground rules that will help your teams stay
  positive. Write them here:
Some Possible Ground Rules for Positivity
• Model a positive attitude yourself
• Glance at the negatives: focus on the positives
• Focus on what’s best, fix what’s wrong
• Solve problems: don’t allocate blame
• Take action: Find the “can-do’s”
• Don’t waste time worrying, moaning, groaning. Be a part of the solution
• Support each other. Support your leaders.
• Give others the benefit of the doubt
• Before being negative, get more information: don’t jump to conclusions
• Stay open to possibilities
