Punjab accepts cmat, cancels met
1. The Punjab government has decided to cancel its state level Management Entrance Test from the next
academic year. Instead it has decided to fill up the Master of Business Administration (MBA) seats on
the basis of the performance in the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT). CMAT exam has
been launched by the All India Council for Technical Education which will be conducted twice a year.
CMAT is likely to become one of the most important management entrance exams of the country apart
from CAT, MAT, XAT and ATMA. It has replaced all other entrance exams that were conducted by some
management institutions individually.
The MET score was used not only for admission to MBA courses but also for admission to the Master of
Computer Application (MCA) course in Punjab. However, from now on the admission to MCA course will
be based on the performance of the applicants in the qualifying degree exam, as informed by Punjab
Technical University (PTU) dean, Buta Singh.
While talking about the government’s decision of scrapping MET, Rajneesh Arora, the vice chancellor of
Punjab Technical University, said that the decreasing number of students appearing for the exam has
prompted the state government to accept this proposal. Last year only eight thousand candidates took
the exam while university admitted more than fourteen thousand candidates to MBA courses through
counseling.
Another reason for taking such a decision was that the state government also wanted to unburden the
students. Now they will have to appear for only one admission test. It will provide some relief to them as
no longer they would have to prepare for multiple entrance tests. It will also save their money as they
don’t have to spend their money on more than one exam. The fees of these exams are quite high so it is
definitely a good news for the applicants.
As the CMAT exam is going to be conducted twice a year by AICTE the talks are on with the affiliated
colleges to hold admission to MBA courses twice a year too. However, these things are on the initial
stage. The final decision on this matter will be taken by the state government.
