2. The Workshop’s inspiration
The unique Peranakan culture in general and the highly ornate
tiles used to decorate their shophouses
The Peranakan culture is a unique hybrid culture that is still part of Singapore’s
living heritage. In this workshop we get our inspiration from the tiles charac-
terised by elaborate design and a brilliant colour palette which were intro-
duced to Peranakan shophouses as the culture reached its richest phase.
Ps. this is not a ceramic tile painting class but Acrylic on canvas, and inspired
by the Peranakan tiles.
joo chiat, katong, east coast, tanjong pagar,Little India, Emerald Hill and
Jalan Besar are some of the locations around Singapore where Peranakan
shophouses decorated with tiles can be seen.
