2. • In 1996, The US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) made it
mandatory for all vehicles to use a
standardized set of diagnostic
codes.
• These codes can provide a wide
array of information about the
current state of the vehicle.
• Examples include: Vehicle speed,
RPMs, and the vehicle's
identification number.
3. • There are four categories of DTC’s.
• Powertrain
• Body
• Chassis
• Network
• Body codes can be used to query sensors for
airbag deployment.
• The US EPA regulations required specific body
codes to be supported on all makes and models.
4.
5. When the service is
activated the phone will
respond with an alert
system if any of the
DTCs that pertain to
airbag deployment have
been triggered.
6. If the user doesn’t respond in a given timeout
period we will text message emergency
contacts with GPS coordinates.
Call emergency contacts and put the phone on
speaker phone.
7. • onStar is our leading competitor.
• Only available on GMC vehicles since
September 2005.
• Even if the vehicle is equipped with the service
you must subscribe in order to use it.
• They offer two plans:
– Safe & Sound: $18.95/month
– Directions & Connections: $28.90/month
8. • An introductory price of $79.99 as well as an
optional monthly charge of $5.
• This includes the application along with a OBD-
II Bluetooth enabled device.
• The $5 monthly price will allow for phoneStar
user access to premium content. This includes
travel assistance and vehicle diagnostic reports
upon requests.
9. • Since our application is compatible with vehicles
dating back to 1996, our customer base is huge!
• According to the US Bureau of Transit Statistics
for 2006 there are just under 251M registered
passenger vehicles.
• Our current implementation is on the android
OS, however any Bluetooth enabled phone can
use this technology.
10. We used a 2000 Honda Civic for the
demonstration.
Used RPMs as our trigger to set off the alert
system.
