Libya - Overview

 Libya is approx. 1.76 million sq km with 6 million inhabitants.
 The Libyan electricity transmission system extends from the
Tunisian border in the west to the Egyptian border in the East,

2000 Km length and extends south nearly 900 km.

 The primary source of Power is Heavy & Light Fuel oil and
Natural Gas

RE Development in Libya
Libya is optimally placed to become a Renewable leader in the region

        It can capitalize on Africa’s
   1
        growth and power demand

        It can leverage its high
   2
        GDP and education level

        It can exploit its significant
   3
wind and solar potential Even though, Libya has
                                         an important potential of
It can diversify and make solar and wind energy
   4
        its economy more resilient
                                            but the role of these
It can further strengthen its resources in the energy
5 economy by adopting a mix is negligible
        strategic RES development
        plan
Solar energy potential

Solar radiation (kWh/m2/day)

                                Average solar radiation of
                                2,470 kWh/m2/day
 one of the highest solar
                                radiation in the world
 Less than 1% of Libyan

                                solar could potentially
                                satisfy Europe demand
Wind energy potential

Wind speed (m/s)

 High average wind speed at
                         several on and off-shore
                         locations (several locations
                         have an average wind speed
                         in the range of 6.5-10.5
                         m/s)
                         Attractive global location
                         for wind farms, even at
                         today’s economics
Renewable Energy Authority of Libya
 Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAOL) was
founded in 2007 to promote the development of renewable
energy in the country.

 A goal has been set by REAOL to reach 10% of the energy
supply from renewable energy resources by the year 2020,
to achieve this target, several plans were decided.

Libya

  • 1. Renewable Energy in Libya ( The Future Prospectives ) Sunday - 23th of October 2011 Cairo
  • 2. Libya - Overview  Libya is approx. 1.76 million sq km with 6 million inhabitants.  The Libyan electricity transmission system extends from the Tunisian border in the west to the Egyptian border in the East, 2000 Km length and extends south nearly 900 km.  The primary source of Power is Heavy & Light Fuel oil and Natural Gas
  • 3. Country resource Resource Libya’s resources Libya in comparison Proven oil reserves of 43 billions Largest oil reserves in Oil BOE with significant additional Africa potential Gas reserves of 10 billions BOE Fourth largest natural gas Gas reserves in Africa Average solar radiation of 2,470 One of the highest solar Solar kWh/m2/day radiation in the world High average wind speed at Attractive global location Wind several locations for wind farms
  • 4. The electricity main key figures Year 2010 Peak demand 5,282 MW Installed capacity 6,196 MW Generated energy 30,426 MWh 220 KV transmission system 13,695 Km Load forecast 400 KV transmission system 1,307 Km 10-12% growth/annum
  • 5. Evolution of Electricity generation (2000-2010) MWh
  • 6. Electricity generation by fuel type (2010) Heavy fuel oil Natural gas (20%) (38%) Light fuel oil (38%)
  • 7. Electricity consumption per sector (2010) Others (23%) Residential (36%) Agriculture (13%) Commercial Industrial (14%) (14%)
  • 8. Existing and planned interconnection
  • 9. RE Development in Libya Libya is optimally placed to become a Renewable leader in the region It can capitalize on Africa’s 1 growth and power demand It can leverage its high 2 GDP and education level It can exploit its significant 3 wind and solar potential Even though, Libya has an important potential of It can diversify and make solar and wind energy 4 its economy more resilient but the role of these It can further strengthen its resources in the energy 5 economy by adopting a mix is negligible strategic RES development plan
  • 10. Solar energy potential Solar radiation (kWh/m2/day)  Average solar radiation of 2,470 kWh/m2/day  one of the highest solar radiation in the world  Less than 1% of Libyan land mass dedicated to solar could potentially satisfy Europe demand
  • 11. Wind energy potential Wind speed (m/s)  High average wind speed at several on and off-shore locations (several locations have an average wind speed in the range of 6.5-10.5 m/s)  Attractive global location for wind farms, even at today’s economics
  • 12. Renewable Energy Authority of Libya  Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAOL) was founded in 2007 to promote the development of renewable energy in the country.  A goal has been set by REAOL to reach 10% of the energy supply from renewable energy resources by the year 2020, to achieve this target, several plans were decided.
  • 13. Renewable energy plan in Libya (2010-2020) 2020 2015 10% RE Share 1500 MW Wind 6% RE Share 800 MW CSP 750 MW Wind 150 MW PV 2010 300 MW SWH 100 MW CSP 50 MW PV 150 MW SWH
  • 14. Wind projects within the mid term plan  Dernah wind farm Phase 1 - 60 MW (Under construction)  Dernah wind farm Phase 2 - 60 MW (Awarded)  Al-Maqrun wind farm Phase 1 - 120 MW (Awarded)  Al-Maqrun wind farm Phase 2 -120 MW (Under negotiation)  Western region wind farm - 250 MW (Under development)  Southern region wind farm - 250 MW (Under development)
  • 15. Solar projects within the mid term plan  Large scale PV plant grid connected 15 MW (Awarded)  Expanding the use of PV technologies to feed remote areas, 2 MW  500 systems PV roof top systems to supply residential areas  Construction of CSP ( Phase I) 100 MW ( Under development )
  • 16. Main Barrier  Subsidized electricity prices  There is no legislation for renewable energy
