STATIONS OF THE CROSS

FIRST STATION: JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Let the life of Jesus flash before the mind’s eye. He was born to enkindle divine love in
our hearts, but He was condemned out of hatred, envy, fear, jealousy, spite and
vengeance. We often condemn our brothers and sisters in order to compete in the
world. Let us not forget that every time we condemn, we curse, we abuse, we deny
others, we are repetitively condemning Jesus to suffering.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, forgive us. (please repeat)

    • For the times we deliberately distorted facts just to suit our convenience. (Resp.)
    • For the times we failed to use all in our power to rescue the exploited because
        we feared the consequences. (Resp.)
    • For the times, when justice called for boldly taking a stand and we miserably
        failed. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

SECOND STATION : JESUS IS MADE TO CARRY THE CROSS

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

The cross that Christ took on His shoulder bore the weight of all our sins. We too have
crosses of various forms to carry. But do we carry the cross silently and patiently or do
we complain? We must remember that the sufferings we endure in carrying our crosses
eventually bring about our spiritual maturity and draw us closer to God.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Heavenly Father, give us the strength. (please
repeat)

    • To take up our cross daily and follow Christ. (Resp.)
    • To say ‘No’ to the temptation of the good life in order to say ‘Yes’ to Christ.
        (Resp.)
    • To make the irrevocable choice for Christ putting aside all temptations to amass
        wealth and possessions. (Resp.)
    • To share in the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.
THIRD STATION : JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME.

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Jesus was not deterred by the fall. He raised himself and continued carrying his cross to
Calvary. Jesus is telling us not to be discouraged when we sin but to rise each time we
yield to temptations. He gave us the sacrament of reconciliation where we can confess
our sins, feel sorry for them and seek His forgiveness. How often do we go to
confession to avail God’s mercy and pardon and experience His love for us?

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, bless their efforts. (please repeat)

    • We lift up to you, Lord, all those who have to struggle to better themselves in the
face of a hostile social environment. (Resp.)
    • We life up to you, Lord, all those whose sincere efforts to do good in order to
transform society come to naught. (Resp.)
    • We lift up to you, Lord, all those whose lives are a long, unending misery.(Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

FOURTH STATION : JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Mary is severely pained at seeing her Son, bruised, beaten and humiliated. Yet, she
accepts it as the will of God and walks with Jesus to Calvary. How easily we sink into
discouragement and despair when publicly corrected, humiliated, misunderstood and
misjudged. We ask Mary, our Mother, to obtain strength for all who are suffering,
oppressed and marginalized.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Mary, our Mother, help us. (please repeat)

    • When we are tempted and our strength seems to fail us. (Resp.)
    • When those who ought to care, abandon us and leave us alone to face our
        problems. (Resp.)
    • When we feel the absence of God in our lives and feel tempted to give in to
        despair. (Resp.)
    • When we are completely overwhelmed by life’s problems and are on the verge of
        a breakdown. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
Saviour crucified.

FIFTH STATION : SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS JESUS TO CARRY HIS CROSS.

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Jesus uses the help of an ordinary stranger to fulfill the mission of redemption. We often
refrain from helping people out of fear of rebuke, of being humiliated, of being
misunderstood or ridiculed and being laughed at. Jesus, urges us to befriend the needy,
the sick, the homeless, to console, the sorrowful and the afflicted and by doing so we
share in carrying the cross with Him.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, may we serve them selflessly. (please repeat)

    • The rejected and the outcast. (Resp.)
    • The poor and the exploited. (Resp.)
    • The orphans and the widows. (Resp.)
    • Those who unexpectedly call on our help. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

SIXTH STATION : VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Veronica was rewarded by Jesus for her love for Him. Jesus teaches us that every act
of kindness out of love for God is rewarded by Him. Do we recognize Jesus in the
members of our family, colleagues and others ? We must realize the truth that Jesus is
present in every man, woman and child.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, help us to rise to the occasion. (please
repeat)

    • When people are in distress and need our assistance. (Resp.)
    • When we are inclined to shirk our responsibility in coming to the assistance of
others for the sacrifice involved. (Resp.)
    • When human respect makes us hesitant to reach out to others. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.
SEVENTH STATION : JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME.

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

If we apply the brake to our hectic lives and ponder a while we will find instances which
contribute to our frequent lapses into sin that hinder the progress of our spiritual life.
Dear Jesus, by this your second fall, grant us the grace of conversion. Help us to live in
true fellowship and work at all times for the good of our souls.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, liberate them. (please repeat)

    • All those who labour under very oppressive, inhuman work conditions. (Resp.)
    • All those child labourers who are forced into the exploitive labour market, due to
        their socio-economic conditions at home.
    • All those `bonded labourers’ shackled to cruel landlords and heartless
        moneylenders.
    • All those domestic workers who are poorly and inhumanly treated.

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

EIGHTH STATION : JESUS CONSOLES THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

O Divine Teacher, by your example, you teach us to forget our sufferings and reach out
to others in their needs and to comfort them in their pains. We must therefore, strive at
all times to increase in selflessness and decrease in selfishness.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, deliver them. (please repeat)

    • From the discrimination women face in the job market. (Resp.)
    • From unjust customs and traditions that deny women their rightful place in
        society. (Resp.)
    • From the indignities heaped on women by callous men. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.
NINTH STATION : JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Jesus’ strength fails Him and He falls the third time, but He perseveres till He reaches
the top. He thus taught us how we should with similar zeal seek to follow Him on the
way of the cross. We must also imitate the example He set for us from the cross on
Calvary when He sought pardon for His executioners. Before we ask pardon for our
iniquities, we must be willing to pardon those who offended us.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, help them, we pray. (please repeat)

    • We pray for all married couples whose marriage is subject to severe strain.
        (Resp.)
    • We pray for all married couples that are unfaithful in marriage.
    • We pray for the children of broken families, helpless victims of circumstances.

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

TENTH STATION : JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Jesus is stripped of everything except His love for us. Let us examine ourselves; the
several times we behave like the executioners, when we strip people of their name,
character with loose talk, idle gossip and backbiting. How many times do we spread
false rumours, destroy the peace and happiness of family lives ? Do we see the
humiliated image of Christ in the faces of people around us who are victims of our loose
tongue ?

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, help us, we pray. (please repeat)

    • To value the inner good we all possess. (Resp.)
    • To be persons ever true to ourselves. (Resp.)
    • To perceive the false propaganda that distort the true values of life. (Resp.)
    • To be authentic and genuine as we come across to people. (Resp.)
    • To live simply without ostentation. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

ELEVENTH STATION : JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Those loving hands that touched and healed, have been brutally nailed to the cross. We
nail His hands every time we pull back our hands from helping the needy. We nail His
legs whenever we tread the evil path and lead others to do the same. We pierce His
Sacred Heart when we amuse ourselves with bad thoughts. We must use ourselves as
effective instruments to glorify Jesus’ name and praise Him.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, help us, to reach out in service. (please
repeat)

    • To the aged and the housebound who have lost all zest for life. (Resp.)
    • To the sick and the bed- ridden. (Resp.)
    • To the terminally ill who have given up all hope of living. (Resp.)
    • To the lonely and the forgotten. (Resp.)

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

TWELFTH STATION : JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

Jesus was faithful to the last. Our Lord crushed the enemy when He conquered sin and
death by giving up His very life. He forgave His executioners, He pardoned the
repentant thief and finally gave Mary as the Mother to the entire human race. He
accomplished His mission and then commended His spirit to the Father. Since we do
not know the hour of our death, we must persevere in the observance of God’s
commandments and be prepared to face our Creator.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, grant us a happy death. (please repeat)

    • To be ready at all times, knowing that death is a home-coming. (Resp.)
    • To accept willingly from the hands of God the kind of death He has reserved for
        us.
    • To have no regrets about our past as we surrender ourselves in death to a
        merciful Father.
    • To live today as though it were our last.
- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

THIRTEENTH STATION : JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

A touching and comforting sight for believers. Touching because our Mother was
helpless with the dead body of her son in her arms; and comforting because she
displayed pure love, and caring for Him. Like her Son, Mary is only compassion and
forgiveness. As our mother, inspite of our sinfulness, she embraces all of us in her
tender loving heart. It is our vocation to bring about reconciliation, forgiveness and
peace.

Prayer –

Thank you, Lord for giving us an example in flesh and blood in the life of Mary of what it
takes to be a person of faith. In the spirit of filial love, let us recite the familiar Marian
prayer of praise : Hail Mary, Full of grace the Lord is with you……………Holy Mary,
Mother of God,…………….

- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

FOURTEENTH STATION : JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB

We adore you O Christ and we praise you….
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

We have before us the life of Jesus, which is our way to heaven; and we also have the
participation of our Blessed Mother as a model of total surrender to God’s will. We
should therefore desire to follow their footsteps and cease to act according to the
promptings of the world. We must believe that on the final day, Jesus will give us
everlasting life in His beautiful kingdom.

Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, may your resurrection inspire new life.
(please repeat)

    • When our failth in You is weak and like the apostles we give in to
        discouragement and doubt. (Resp.)
    • When tragedy strikes our lives and we see no purpose in living. (Resp.)
    • When we lose our sense of perspective and are unable to see beyond the
immediate happenings of our lives. (Resp.)
- Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
- Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my
      Saviour crucified.

TENTH STATION : JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS We adore you O Christ and we praise you…. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world! Jesus is stripped of everything except His love for us. Let us examine ourselves; the several times we behave like the executioners, when we strip people of their name, character with loose talk, idle gossip and backbiting. How many times do we spread false rumours, destroy the peace and happiness of family lives ? Do we see the humiliated image of Christ in the faces of people around us who are victims of our loose tongue ? Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, help us, we pray. (please repeat) • To value the inner good we all possess. (Resp.) • To be persons ever true to ourselves. (Resp.) • To perceive the false propaganda that distort the true values of life. (Resp.) • To be authentic and genuine as we come across to people. (Resp.) • To live simply without ostentation. (Resp.) - Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us.
  • 6. - Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my Saviour crucified. ELEVENTH STATION : JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS We adore you O Christ and we praise you…. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world! Those loving hands that touched and healed, have been brutally nailed to the cross. We nail His hands every time we pull back our hands from helping the needy. We nail His legs whenever we tread the evil path and lead others to do the same. We pierce His Sacred Heart when we amuse ourselves with bad thoughts. We must use ourselves as effective instruments to glorify Jesus’ name and praise Him. Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, help us, to reach out in service. (please repeat) • To the aged and the housebound who have lost all zest for life. (Resp.) • To the sick and the bed- ridden. (Resp.) • To the terminally ill who have given up all hope of living. (Resp.) • To the lonely and the forgotten. (Resp.) - Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us. - Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my Saviour crucified. TWELFTH STATION : JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS We adore you O Christ and we praise you…. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world! Jesus was faithful to the last. Our Lord crushed the enemy when He conquered sin and death by giving up His very life. He forgave His executioners, He pardoned the repentant thief and finally gave Mary as the Mother to the entire human race. He accomplished His mission and then commended His spirit to the Father. Since we do not know the hour of our death, we must persevere in the observance of God’s commandments and be prepared to face our Creator. Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, grant us a happy death. (please repeat) • To be ready at all times, knowing that death is a home-coming. (Resp.) • To accept willingly from the hands of God the kind of death He has reserved for us. • To have no regrets about our past as we surrender ourselves in death to a merciful Father. • To live today as though it were our last.
  • 7. - Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us. - Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my Saviour crucified. THIRTEENTH STATION : JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS We adore you O Christ and we praise you…. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world! A touching and comforting sight for believers. Touching because our Mother was helpless with the dead body of her son in her arms; and comforting because she displayed pure love, and caring for Him. Like her Son, Mary is only compassion and forgiveness. As our mother, inspite of our sinfulness, she embraces all of us in her tender loving heart. It is our vocation to bring about reconciliation, forgiveness and peace. Prayer – Thank you, Lord for giving us an example in flesh and blood in the life of Mary of what it takes to be a person of faith. In the spirit of filial love, let us recite the familiar Marian prayer of praise : Hail Mary, Full of grace the Lord is with you……………Holy Mary, Mother of God,……………. - Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us. - Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my Saviour crucified. FOURTEENTH STATION : JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB We adore you O Christ and we praise you…. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world! We have before us the life of Jesus, which is our way to heaven; and we also have the participation of our Blessed Mother as a model of total surrender to God’s will. We should therefore desire to follow their footsteps and cease to act according to the promptings of the world. We must believe that on the final day, Jesus will give us everlasting life in His beautiful kingdom. Let us Pray – Your Response : Lord, may your resurrection inspire new life. (please repeat) • When our failth in You is weak and like the apostles we give in to discouragement and doubt. (Resp.) • When tragedy strikes our lives and we see no purpose in living. (Resp.) • When we lose our sense of perspective and are unable to see beyond the immediate happenings of our lives. (Resp.)
  • 8. - Have mercy on us O Lord…… Have mercy on us. - Holy mother, pierce me through, in my heart, each wound renew, of my Saviour crucified.
