- Water is a basic and essential natural resource that makes life possible for all and the creatures with which we share this beautiful county. Using water wisely is essential to ensuring a clean, reliable supply for the future. – Marin Municipal Water District (2011).
- MMWD owns and manages 21,000 acres of watershed lands and seven reservoirs that supply 75 percent of the annual water supply.
- The remaining 25 percent of water supply is imported via pipeline from the Russian River watershed. Rainfall to the watershed varies from year to year. As a result of limited supply of water and storage, water conservation is a permanent priority for MMWD.
- The District serves 147-square mile area in south and central Marin County, which includes a population of 195,000.Residential accounts make up more than 90% of the customer base - about 70% of total water use.
- Following the worst draught on record in the late 1970s,MMWD added numerous best management practices, such as water conservation programs, more surface water storage and a recycled water program.
- In this way, the District has been successful over the last decade at helping its customers conserve the precious water it receives each year.
- In fact, from 2000 to 2010, the population has grown roughly 3%, yet the water consumption has decreased 7.2%
- Since Marin County’s population is likely to continue growing, the District believes that an educational approach is an effective and valuable for water conservation.
- MMWD has a history of implementing many Best Management Practices to help customers conserve water, which include water supply low-flow showerheads, toilet leak prevention, water conservation literature, appliance rebates and water wise classes.
- And speaking of WATER WISE classes, the District plans to build on its successful educational program by offering a new series of classes – because each of its residential customers is a potential student for water conservation.
- MMWD’s Vision is to meet the water supply and treatment needs of its customers, while protecting the environment, for decades to come.
- MMWD’s Mission is to “manage our natural resources in a sustainable manner and to provide our customers with a reliable, high quality water at a reasonable price.”
- The District’s brand value is established with its “point of difference.” With regard to the classes, though the information may be similar to that of other water-wise classes offered in the community, the District imparts a level of confidence and trust in the information provided.
- Why is this so?
- MMWD’s Personality projects that of reliable, skilled professionals and public servants who are accessible and engaged with the community.
- The District’s story begins with the fact that it was the first in California – the oldest municipal water district in the state and commemorated with this logo. Subject to high water rates and inconsistent water service, a group of civic-minded Marin County citizens succeeded in their movement to have a publicly owned and operated water district.
- MMWD’s corporate logo today depicts a stream of water alongside Mount Tamalpais, an iconic image of Marin reinforcing MMWD’s connection to the county and its resources.
- The brand essence of MMWD is embodied in its logos, it’s conservation projects, and land stewardship.
- Mt. Tamalpais Watershed, is the primary source for Marin’s water supply and is protected and maintained by the District.
- MMWDand the community come together in various ways to support the biological health, educational value and enjoyment of its lands and resources. Engaging its community with protection of the watershed is a part of MMWD’s Brand Strategy.
