- 4. The ILO (UN International Labour Organization) projects a global unemployment rate of 6.1 percent, equivalent to 203.3 million unemployed. In United States alone, the unemployment rate is 9.1 %, which equals 14 million unemployed. - Hi everyone, my name is Rita J. Cartwright, and I am the founder of RJ’s Internet Marketing Services.Some background information about me. After I received my marketing degree at 45 years old, I couldn’t find a job in marketing. I was offered sales positions which were 100% commissioned based, which I turned down. I even tried retail management. That didn’t work out either. I searched for another job for approximately 2 years with no luck. So I decided to start my own business. At first, I continued to look for employment, while starting up my new business. I soon discovered that I had to focus all of my energy on building my business. It occurred to me that while I was looking for employers, I could be searching for clients.I recently read that I am among (start slides) 18.3 million home-based businesses in the United States alone and close to 60 million worldwide!
- I don’t know how accurate these figures are but they sound credible. When I first started my home-based business 9 years ago, home-based businesses weren’t that popular nor did it have much credibility. If someone asks, “So what do you do?” “I am a home-based business owner.” The reactions weren’t encouraging. In fact, the articles that were published during this time would suggest to not mention the part about being a home-based business owner, but to say that you are an entrepreneur instead. Nowadays, it is admirable to operate a home-based business. Due to baby boomers being pushed out of their jobs and finding themselves not desirable for hire, as well as the lack of available jobs, more baby boomers and the unemployed are becoming entrepreneurs. Baby boomers aren’t ready to retire or can’t retire because of not having any retirement funds, and unemployment is at an all time high.
- In a work from home coursework that I created, I covered 9 types of businesses you can operate online from the comfort of your own home.
- A little marketing note, although there are over 2 billion people online, everyone is not your potential client. In order for your marketing message to be effective, it needs to be designed for your target audience. Within your target audience is a subset called a niche. You can offer specialized services to this group of potential clients without a lot of competition. I also covered specialized services you can offer in my work from home courses.
- For stay at home parents, you are able to earn an income, while being able to stay at home with your children. For working parents, this eliminates the need for child care, which instantly saves you a lot of money. Also, you are not exposing your children to the germs and illnesses that can be lurking at some of the child care centers. I’m not pointing a finger at child care centers, it is just a fact; for example, a child in attendance can have a cold. The parent has to go to work and has no other alternative but to leave their child at the child care center. Now your child is at risk of catching a cold. You may have to miss work to stay home to care of your sick child.
- (slide) However, being your own boss is a lot of work.When working for someone else, your only concern is completing the tasks at hand. As an entrepreneur, you’re not only completing the tasks for your clients, you’re responsible for the operations of your business. I also covered what is involved in operating your business in the coursework that I mentioned earlier.(slide) You will also have to recondition your thinking from working for someone else to now I’m working for myself.This is necessary in order for you to think and behave like an entrepreneur, which is vital to your success. Your potential clients will sense your confidence in yourself or the lack thereof.
- Even virtual assistants need a Virtual Assistant. There are plenty of virtual assistant forums and directories where you can find a qualified, skilled virtual assistant.
