Our focus with DX is in the data center. The data center is at the center of the enterprise.
End users in branches and remote locations need fast access over the WAN for myriad applications and data which have beenconsolidated in the enterprise data center as a result of branch office converged infrastructures and consolidation initiatives.
Data protection is a critical need anywhere it resides.Once data and applications are consolidated in the primary data center, organizations need to transfer and protect all applications and data more frequently – without incurring more costs – in order to reduce business risk. Many businesses are using one or more data centers as a business-critical BC/DR solution for the primary data center.
Riverbed currently offers two solutions. Steelhead EX for branch office consolidation with VSP and Granite (storage)And Steelhead CX for seamless network integration into remote sites and data centers, with scalable performance designed to support a growing number of users, devices, and data.
Steelhead CX also is used for transferring and replicating data and apps over the WAN to the DR data center in a BC/DR use case.
IT has a big conflict. There’s a dramatic gap between the growth in data that IT must manage and the budget with which to manage growth. There’s an annual growth in data of almost 50%. Business network traffic will grow 2.5x by 2017. 80% of traffic already is on the WAN today. But budget will grow only 3%, while WAN services spend overall will reach 80B. 40B will be spent on BC/DR.All of these stats are driven by business critical initiatives – data center consolidation, server and branch consolidation, and tape backup elimination. In short – there’s more data in fewer locations, that is, in business-critical data centers.
So what’s required? Doing more with less. Our value: DX protects more data more often with reduced cost and risk.Benefits: It accelerates WAN performance by up to 60x.And it reduces bandwidth requirements by up to 99%.
The two topologies – branch to data center versus DC to DC – are vastly different though.Branch to DCUser intensiveMany short-lived connectionsGoal: Accelerate User Transactions
DC to DCData-intensive Few long-lived connectionsAccelerate Data Transfers
SH DX Edition 8000 Series is our fastest Steelhead appliance.Up to 2Gbps with an unrestricted spec Up to 10 Gbps LAN capacity.10,000 connections – make it ideal for DC to DC versus branch topologies with the need for more connectionsUnique and advanced visibility and control benefits for data replication applications. EMC SRDF/A and NetAppSnapMirror
Introducing the Riverbed Steelhead DX Edition. This edition is purpose built for the unique needs of datacenter to datacenter processes like replication. Unlike branch office to datacenter connections where there may be many end user TCP sessions connecting to applications running in the datacenter that all need to be optimized. In a DC to DC scenario, organizations are faced with a small number of connections but with a large volume of data traversing that link. And the movement of this data is purely to support data backup, protection and recovery purposes supporting BC/DR initiatives.Steelhead DX edition can delivery up to 60X faster performance and up to 99% reduction in bandwidth for replication workloads between datacenters no matter the distance between them and eliminates the performance impacts of latency and packet loss.New capabilities like a Turbo data streamlining mode and an expanded onboard datastore architecture can more than double the amount of data transferred over long distance between data centers compared to Steelhead CX models.
Steelhead DX extends and completes the Riverbed SH portfolio, Leveraging RiOS enabled Data & Transport StreamliningStorage-granular WAN visibility and controlEnabling Plug-n-play deployment for storage replicationWith 2+ GbpsWAN for unique DC-to-DC optimization
In sum, Steelhead DX Edition solves for the challenges – too much data to protect, insufficient throughput, and difficulty tracking/tuning/troubleshooting DR processes – with Data streamlining – up to 99%WAN bandwidth reductionTransport streamlining – up to 60x WAN performance increaseStorage visibility and control – predictable performance, faster troubleshooting, and better business planningThe most complete solution for DC-to-DC WAN optimization. DX Edition
The challenge for storage and network architects is Visibility and Control.Storage administrators versus network architects speak very different languages. The storage expert thinks in terms of data and application types. The network architect thinks in terms of packets, since Information in the network loses its identity. Some of our competitors deal with this information only on a packet-by-packet basis, thus excluding the perspective of the storage administrator.SetupWhen storage administrators architect and configure SAN and NAS devices, they do so while thinking specifically about the applications the storage infrastructure is serving. That’s because different applications types (Email, ERP, Media, etc.) have different capacity requirements, different performance requirements. However, when data is replicated across a network, the identity of the underlying applications gets lost. Instead, there is a different application presented to the network, such as SRDF or SnapMirror. As a result, all the data from the different source applications look the same and have historically been treated the same.
We provide visibility and control for both the storage and network architects. How we solve for it:On a Steelhead optimized network, the flow of data looks more like this (CLICK). By leveraging its layer-7 fluency in data replication applications, RiOS is able to peer deeper into the flow of data and identify which bits of information correspond to which of the underlying applications. This gives you the ability to:Track end-to-end performance optimization for each storage element (Volume, RDF group).(CLICK) Selectively tune RiOS optimization for individual storage elements. This means, for example, that you can apply full optimization (deduplication and compression) to the data sets that benefit most such as Virtual Machines and Email Exchange, and focus on network transport streamlining optimizations for data sets that won’t benefit from data reduction techniques (e.g., Data encrypted at rest, Rich media, etc.).(CLICK) Provide fine-grain network QoS for data associated to specific storage elements.Specifically,DX for EMC SRDF/A offers –RDF-granular optimization policiesRDF-granular performance reportsSRDF-enhanced plug-n-play network integrationDX for NetAppSnapMirror –Volume-granular network QoSVolume-granular optimization policiesVolume-granular performance reports
As you can see in the case, there are challenges associated with the WAN.The first strain is caused by congestion. The same WAN link capacity is now forced to handle an ever increasing rate of data and applications, as well there are more applications and data competing for the same resources. That growing data set generated by users and applications needs to be backed up from endpoints, branch offices to datacenters and then replicated over the WAN from primary to secondary datacenters.
The other challenge is low WAN throughput.Simply adding more capacity with bandwidth will not solve the performance problem as it does not guarantee higher throughput due to link quality issues of latency and packet loss. Also, WAN upgrades can be expensive and add time to BC/DR projects…High latency and/or packet loss thus dramatically degrade throughput for business critical data transfers and replication.
You can achieve optimized WAN Throughput for NetApp Snap Mirror with RVBD Transport Streamlining. As WAN latency and packet loss increase, un-optimized WAN performance declines. Under the same conditions of latency and packet loss, Riverbed optimized WAN performance remains constantly high - at 620 Mbps – despite latency and packet loss.
