This document summarizes a survey of taxonomy building tools presented at a semantic technology conference. It discusses the evolution of needs for such tools from 1999 to address challenges of developing taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and exposing metadata relationships. The document evaluates various thesaurus tools, brainstorming tools, ontology tools, and visualization tools based on ease of use, functionality, and ability to address current needs such as prototyping data relationships before implementing a data management solution. It concludes by asking what an ideal tool would look like.
