2. Enabling Mobile App Development
Challenge: This leading airline needed to update the
functionality of its iPhone app by exposing its information
assets to internal developers. It also wanted to expose
assets to partners, facilitating third‐party app creation.
Solution: A Layer 7 Gateway was deployed to gate
incoming requests, securing internal information assets
and ensuring backend services would not be
overwhelmed by third‐party calls.
Results: The airline was quick‐to‐market with a
completely redesigned app. Various other apps were also
created, adding significant value to the company’s
offerings and expanding its market reach.
iPad Field Enablement
Challenge: This US Medicaid provider needed an efficient
way for field operatives to gather client information.
Employees were issued iPads but these were not able to
remotely connect to on‐premise databases.
Solution: A Layer 7 Gateway was used to connect
employee iPads with an on‐premise enterprise service
bus, via APIs. The Gateway delivered essential API
security and data routing functionality.
Results: Employees became able to enter data directly
into on‐premise systems while on house calls, allowing
them to concentrate on providing excellent customer
service and significantly reducing administrative errors.
Empowering Emerging Markets
Challenge: This major European telco needed a way to
securely open its mobile APIs to partner developers and
governmental organizations in emerging markets,
facilitating the delivery of services via mobile devices
Solution: A Layer 7 Gateway was employed to create a
layer of abstraction between functionality available
internally and functionality exposed to partners. The
Gateway was also used to track and measure API usage.
Results: By securely providing developers with access to
telco data and functionality, the company created an
agile IT platform on which to develop new offerings
faster and at less cost, by reusing existing services.
