The Digital Economy Act aimed to crack down on online piracy but was controversial. It granted new enforcement powers to rights holders but faced legal challenges from ISPs. Critics argued the law was rushed through without proper scrutiny. Studies showed that filesharing was not decreasing as the government intended and alternative business models were possible.
