ALS General User Proposal
(Includes Experiment Safety Sheet)
For beamtime cycle including: November 22, 2013
Overview and Contact Information
Title of Experiment (100 characters max including spaces): Eggshell Scan
Abstract: Describe the proposed research project (600 characters max including
spaces) Abstracts generally cover:
(1) what the objectives of the study were; [BACKGROUND]
(2) how the study was done; [METHODS]
(3) what results were obtained; [RESULTS]
(4) and the significance of the results. [CONCLUSION]
We at the Black Pine Circle Scientific Studies Division, want to scan an eggshell.
Poes on the surface of the shell allow air and moisture to go through. A larger, 3D-
model will provide tactile information. Designs may be made to create new housing
materials, for hot, humid places. We will be beaming hard X-rays through the sample
from various angles, giving us a computer model, which can be 3D-printed. This
Information can be studied for housing materials, to create a new type of ultra-modern
house that literally breathes in places with moisture buildup.

ignored.
The following criteria, endorsed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics
(IUPAP) in the IUPAP Recommendations for the Use of Major Physics Users Facilities,
will be used by the Proposal Study Panels (PSPs) to evaluate beam time proposals for
general users:
1. Scientific merit
2. Technical feasibility
3. Capability of the experimental group
4. Availability of the resources required
PIs and experimental leads will find it helpful to address each of these aspects in their
proposals.
Scientific Support Case: Eggshell Scan
We at the Black Pine Circle Scientific Studies Division, want to scan an eggshell.
Pores on the surface of the shell allow air and moisture to go through.
We will be using Beamline 8.3.2, to scan our sample and create a 3D-model of it.
We realise that Beamline time is precious, so we are not asking for more than 45
minutes on the line. Our work is entirely non-profit, and could revolutionize architecture
and construction around the world. Using the hard X-rays, we can get a 3D-model on
the computer, and then convert that into a 3D-model that has been printed by a 3D-
printer.
The Principal Investigator, Scientist 1, has been interested in science for almost
his entire life. Last year, in a team effort with other esteemed scientists, Scientist 1 built
an earthquake-safe building using only paper and tape. “We all had to do different
things and we did not argue so in all I think that our building process went very well.”
Scientist 2, Experimental Lead, has been to the synchrotron twice before.
He also worked on an earthquake-safe building with a different team at around the
same time as Scientist 1. Scientist 2 has a lot of excess knowledge about particle
physics, because he has spare time. Or, rather, he makes spare time. He is currently
working on developing a game for the Android platform, with fellow Beamline 8.3.2
scientists. Scientist 2 has attended lectures on physics by Art Sussman, Ian Hinchliffe,
and had his picture taken with a cardboard cutout of Saul Perlmutter.
Scientist 3 has been working on a project which has expanded his knowledge of
3D-printing and coding. His idea was to 3D-print a toy car, put a motor and wheels in,
and remote control it with a Raspberry Pi. Other than that, Scientist 3 has also worked
on an Earthquake-safe building. He has extremely good hand-to-eye coordination and
can do precision work faster than anyone else in our group.
Technical Description of Experiment: Identify hazards and describe process (50-100
words)*
We will be scanning a raw eggshell, meaning that there is a possibility that we could be
dealing with Salmonella. We will wash our hands frequently and make sure to clean the
sample before going to the ALS. We will also keep the eggshell away from places that
could be affected by Salmonella.
Hazard Checklist
Check the box of material and equipment that your are bringing. After all safety
information relating to your experiment have been filled out you will be presented with a
submission agreement to complete the process.

Example proposal for beamline 8.2 at the ALS

  • 1. ALS General User Proposal (Includes Experiment Safety Sheet) For beamtime cycle including: November 22, 2013 Overview and Contact Information Title of Experiment (100 characters max including spaces): Eggshell Scan Abstract: Describe the proposed research project (600 characters max including spaces) Abstracts generally cover: (1) what the objectives of the study were; [BACKGROUND] (2) how the study was done; [METHODS] (3) what results were obtained; [RESULTS] (4) and the significance of the results. [CONCLUSION] We at the Black Pine Circle Scientific Studies Division, want to scan an eggshell. Poes on the surface of the shell allow air and moisture to go through. A larger, 3D- model will provide tactile information. Designs may be made to create new housing materials, for hot, humid places. We will be beaming hard X-rays through the sample from various angles, giving us a computer model, which can be 3D-printed. This Information can be studied for housing materials, to create a new type of ultra-modern house that literally breathes in places with moisture buildup. The following criteria, endorsed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in the IUPAP Recommendations for the Use of Major Physics Users Facilities, will be used by the Proposal Study Panels (PSPs) to evaluate beam time proposals for general users: 1. Scientific merit 2. Technical feasibility 3. Capability of the experimental group 4. Availability of the resources required PIs and experimental leads will find it helpful to address each of these aspects in their proposals. • 4. Information can be studied for housing materials, to create a new type of ultra-modern house that literally breathes in places with moisture buildup. We will be using Beamline 8.3.2, to scan our sample and create a 3D-model of it. We realise that Beamline time is precious, so we are not asking for more than 45 minutes on the line. Our work is entirely non-profit, and could revolutionize architecture and construction around the world. Using the hard X-rays, we can get a 3D-model on the computer, and then convert that into a 3D-model that has been printed by a 3D- printer. The Principal Investigator, Scientist 1, has been interested in science for almost his entire life. Last year, in a team effort with other esteemed scientists, Scientist 1 built an earthquake-safe building using only paper and tape. “We all had to do different things and we did not argue so in all I think that our building process went very well.” Scientist 2, Experimental Lead, has been to the synchrotron twice before. He also worked on an earthquake-safe building with a different team at around the same time as Scientist 1. Scientist 2 has a lot of excess knowledge about particle physics, because he has spare time. Or, rather, he makes spare time. He is currently working on developing a game for the Android platform, with fellow Beamline 8.3.2 scientists. Scientist 2 has attended lectures on physics by Art Sussman, Ian Hinchliffe, and had his picture taken with a cardboard cutout of Saul Perlmutter. Scientist 3 has been working on a project which has expanded his knowledge of 3D-printing and coding. His idea was to 3D-print a toy car, put a motor and wheels in, and remote control it with a Raspberry Pi. Other than that, Scientist 3 has also worked on an Earthquake-safe building. He has extremely good hand-to-eye coordination and can do precision work faster than anyone else in our group.
  • 5. Technical Description of Experiment: Identify hazards and describe process (50-100 words)* We will be scanning a raw eggshell, meaning that there is a possibility that we could be dealing with Salmonella. We will wash our hands frequently and make sure to clean the sample before going to the ALS. We will also keep the eggshell away from places that could be affected by Salmonella. Hazard Checklist Check the box of material and equipment that your are bringing. After all safety information relating to your experiment have been filled out you will be presented with a submission agreement to complete the process.
