2. The Bone Marrow and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Department
at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, is made up of:
• Physicians
• Nurse Practitioners
• Physician Assistants
• Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinators
• Nurses
• Social workers
• Nutritionists
• Chaplains
• Financial Advisors
These professionals have dedicated themselves to the care of the BMT patient and
ensure that the best quality care is delivered.
3. Getting an Appointment
Once you have been referred to the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant
Program, you will call the BMT office at (212) 746-2119
to set up your first visit.
4. Your First Visit
During your first visit, you will be evaluated by a BMT Physician, Nurse
Practitioner and/or Physician Assistant. At this visit, you will be introduced to
your Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinator who will be responsible for setting
up all of your pre transplant screenings and tests. The pre-transplant testing
consists of the following:
• Physical Examination
• Blood Tests
• Cardiology Test
• Pulmonary Test
• Radiology Tests
• Bone Marrow Biopsy or other diagnostic test
• Dental Referral
• Evaluation by a Social Worker
5. Your First Visit
Your BMT coordinator will be your contact throughout the pre-transplant
phase. The coordinator will set up your testing, conduct your donor search
should you need a donor and will contact you. The BMT coordinator works
closely with your physician to ensure that all testing is done and that the best
donor source is selected for your transplant should you need one. At the end
of the first visit you will receive a Bone Marrow Transplant Educational Binder
with information that you can read at your leisure.
7. Chemotherapy
Collection of your own cells (Apheresis)
Conditioning chemotherapy
Infusion of your stem cells
Monitoring you in the hospital
Discharge from hospital and outpatient care
Autologous Transplant
(when you receive your own cells)
8. Find a donor
Administration of your conditioning chemotherapy Collection of donor cells
Infusion of donor cells into you
Monitoring you in the hospital
Discharge from hospital and outpatient care
Allogeneic Transplant
(when you receive stem cells from a donor that may be a relative, unrelated person or cord blood)
9. After Your Transplant
Once discharged from the hospital you will be seeing your BMT physician in the outpatient clinic
setting as frequently as your physician deems necessary.
