2. Location Iceland is located in the North Atlantic, not far away from Greenland.

5. Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, was founded in the year 874.

6. The local parliament, the Althing, was created in 930.

7. To win an argument in the Althing, the speaker had to get the most support from the landlords.

8. This makes Iceland one of the oldest democracies in the world.

9. Iceland became part of Norway in 1262.

10. In 1662, it became part of Denmark.

12. In 1980 Vigdís Finnbogadóttir became the president of Iceland. She was the world's first elected woman president.

13. In 2008 it was hit hard by the global financial crisis, causing the collapse of all three of the country's major commercial banks.

14. By the end of 2008, Iceland's external debt was $70 billion (compared to its GDP of a bit more than $12 billion).

15. In the 2009 the parliament approved same-sex marriages.

21. Climate The climate is subpolar oceanic. Annual rainfall is 500 to 1500 mm. The North Atlantic Current makes the climate more temperate. The average temperture in winter is 0 to -10 °C, in summer 10 – 25 °C above zero.

22. Volcanoes Iceland has over 100 volcanic mountains. The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 and Grímsvötn in 2011 sent thousands of tonnes of ash into the sky in a few days, disrupting air travel all over Europe. The closure of the airspace left five million travelers stranded around the world.
