Parivarthan-The Conference for a Change
T
he 44th district conference of RI district
3180- PARIVARTHAN took off in style on 10th
January 15, 2014 at Silent Shores, Mysore.
Being the hosts, the Rotarians of Mysore had lot of
anxiety as the expectations were sky high. DG Gururaj
and his conference committee chairmen had done
meticulous preparations and Kudos to all of them.
Nearly 2500 delegates descended in Mysore and they
were in for 3 days extravaganza.
1st day programme was formal inauguration of the
cultural event by Mr. Shankar Ashwath, son of late
kannada film actor Ashwath, and he himself being
good theatre personality was all in humility expressed
his gratitude for inviting him to such a prestigious
function. The district cultural competitions winners
exhibited their talents and it was followed by dance
exhibition by “Beyond Taalas”. Much was expected of
this famous troupe however, lack of a proper anchor
for the programme could not hold the audience to
their seats sadly dancers performed to the empty
chairs- could have been better planned.
On second day i.e. 11th January, was the formal
inauguration of the conference and our own Kalaakar
Rtn. Harish had directed the event involving all the
Presidents and their wives, the AG, the DG and other
dignitaries were taken in a Mysore Darbar procession
and our own Rtn. Vishwa was giving the commentary
in his Amitabh Bacchan voice. “Paraks” were shouted
and the Swami Brhmanandaji of Chinmaya mission
formally inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp.
RIP representative PDG Rtn. Arun Sharma was present
along with other dignitaries. Plenary session started in
right earnest. “Joy of giving “by Sri. Gururaja Karjagi
was really appealing and the story he told about the
girl who shaves of her head to express her camaraderie
with her friend who had cancer brought tears in many
eyes. The talk on co-operation between governmental
and nongovernmental organizations by Dr. Seetharam
of SYVM was very lucid when he shared his experiences
with the Govt. while working in SYVM. The talk on “For
M-powerement bring out the W-power” by Smt.
Vasanthi Hariprakash, a noted TV journalist was also
impressive. So also is the talk on “Aim high” by Shri
Ravishankar CEO of Aim High. Post lunch started with
Tatva padagalu by Shri Basavalingaiah Hiremath and
the much awaited talk by Master Hirrannaiah on
“Samajika parivarthane” carried all the humour,
masala typical of Hirrannaiah. The talk by Shanti
Raghavan on employment of diffently abled persons in
the society would have been better had she done her
talk in English. Evening entertainment was a mega
success as people enjoyed the melodies of Mysore
sisters Lakshmi Nagaraj and Indu Nagaraj which went
on for good 3hrs. Parallel entertainment at Chaitany
Vihara- the house of friendship went on till midnight
and the spirits were flowing freely.
Third day i.e. 12th January being Birthday of Swami
Vivekananda – started off with bhajans from
Ramakrishna Vidyashala Students followed by talk by
veteran speaker Dr. Prabhushankar. The talk on “ the
youth's role in nation building “ by Dr. Niranjan Vanalli
won many a hearts and the story he told of Ms.
Arunima who lost her both the legs in a train mishap
fighting the miscreants and who went on climb mt.
Everest was really moving. RIP representative PDG
Arun Sharma added his observations in three different
settings and looked largely happy with the
proceedings.
Three day intellectual and cultural extravaganza
came to an end finally. The food that was served all
these three days needs a special mention. The menu
was carefully selected, delicious and satisfied
everybody. Well done Rtn. Ravindra Bhat , food
committee chairman who was there through and
through to supervise. Midtowners extended their
helping hand in managing the non-veg counter.
Congrats to conference committee chairman PDG. Rtn.
Laxminarayan, PDG. Guru, chairman for programmes
committee, our own Nandoo who had his expertise in
almost all the areas and of course to all others who
have done excellent job in making this event a grand
success.
Midtowners –numbering 58, thouroughly enjoyed
and 25 of them have already booked for the next
conference at Puttur where DGE Rtn. Bhaskar has
planned to organize the conference and our own Rtn.
Umesh has offered Five star Homestay
accommodation. Three cheers….

Reminiscences of Bhandavyotsava-2014
Chairman of the successful community service project
“Bhandavyotsava”, Rtn.R.S.Vishwanath recognized and
felicitated all those involved in making the event successful.
It was evident from the sentimental talk that Rtn.Vishwa is
now ready for the next Bhandavyotsava. He was seen
coaxing people to contribute more for the next edition of the
meaningful project. Later, Midtown felicitated Rtn.Vishwa
for his efforts in co coordinating the mega project.

Rotary Information
A new earlydetection test
for malaria does
not require a
blood sample,
and instead
detects the
presence of the disease by listening for it.
The team, from Rice University, based the
method on the presence of hemoozion, a
nanoparticle produced inside the red blood
cell by the malaria parasite. They found that
subjecting the homozoin to a short wave laser
pulse will cause it to create a short-lived,
vapor nanobubble that will emit a signature
sound when it pops. This sound can be picked
up by a sensitive acoustic device, allowing the
disease to be detected in the early stages
without the need to draw blood or use a
reagent. Additionally, once the device is fully
developed it will not even require a medical
professional to carry out the testing.
The new device was able to detect a single
malaria-infected cell among a sample of one
million healthy cells, with no false positive.
RI President-elect
Gary C.K. Huang chose
Light Up Rotary as his
theme for 2014-15. Huang
was inspired by the
teachings of Chinese
philosopher Confucious
who said: "It is better to
light a single candle, than
to sit and curse the darkness."
"There are so many problems in the world,
so many people who need help. Many people
say, 'There's nothing I can do.' So they sit there
doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays
dark," Huang told the 537 district governors
and their spouses and partners who are
attending the 2014 International Assembly in
San Diego, California.
"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The
Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you
light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one.
Together, we light up the world," said Huang,
who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei
in Taiwan.
