ONLINE BIBLE COMMENTARY
JUDE IN THE BIBLE
1) The Book of Jude has been described as the "difficult
and neglected letter". It is certainly a neglected letter as
you seldom, if ever, hear a sermon or read a bible study on
the book of Jude. That is to the detriment of believers
today. The little book of Jude is chock full of teachings
that apply to the Christian church today, especially in
these last days before the coming of the Lord.
2) It is believed that Jude was written between 70 and 80
A.D.
3. 3) Verses of scripture are from the KING JESUS VERSION
unless otherwise noted.
4) I personally enjoy reading and studying Jude. There is
so much information in this book that is not found
anywhere else in the Bible. It is a shame that more
teaching is not done on this book.
FOUNDATIONAL VERSES OF OUR MINISTRY
1) 2 Timothy 3:16--All Scripture is inspired by God and is
useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what
is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us
to do what is right.
2) 2 PETER 1:20-21
20--Above all, you must understand that no prophecy in
Scripture ever came from the prophets themselves.
21--or because they wanted to prophesy. It was the Holy
Spirit who moved the prophets to speak from God.
EXPLANATION
a) The Bible was written by men who were inspired or
influenced by God to write what he wanted them to write,
not what they wanted to write. You must understand this.
Men wrote what God wanted them to write, not what
they wanted to write.
4. b) The Bible is the Word of God, not the word of men.
3) GALATIANS 1:8-9
8--Let God's curse fall on anyone, including myself, who
preaches any other message than the one we told you
about. If an angel comes from heaven and preaches any
other message, let him be forever cursed.
9--I will say it again--if anyone preaches any other gospel
than the one you welcomed, let God's curse fall upon that
person.
EXPLANATION -- the gospel the apostle Paul is referring to
is the gospel of Jesus Christ. You cannot not add or take
anything away, from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
***** BIBLE VERSES ON SALVATION
4) ROMANS 3:22--We are made right in God's sight when
we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all
can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or
what we have done.
5) EPHESIANS 2:8-9
8) Because of God's kindness, you have been saved
through trusting Christ to save you. And even trusting is
not of yourselves; it too is a gift from God.
9) Salvation is not a reward for the good we have done, so
5. none of us can take any credit for it.
EXPLANATION
a) You cannot earn your salvation. You have nothing to
offer to God. Most people think that if "the good
outweighs the bad" in their lives, they will go to heaven.
That is not true.
b) Salvation is a gift that Jesus Christ offers to every
human being. Jesus paid the price for our salvation. A
price you, me, or any other human being cannot pay. You
either accept the free gift of salvation, or you reject it.
6) 1 JOHN 5:13-- I have written this to you who believe in
the Son of God so that you may know you have eternal
life.
7) JEREMIAH 3:15--And I will give you pastors according to
mine heart, which will feed you with knowledge and
understanding. (KJV Bible)
*****EXPLANATION = we need pastors who will explain
the Word of God to us, not entertain us. Most church
services today are nothing more than "religious
entertainment".
WHY WAS JUDE IN THE BIBLE WRITTEN ?
6. 1) Jude was written to correct the teachings of Bible false
prophets, their corruption of the gospel of Jesus Christ
and their denial of the deity of Christ.
2) If the Bible false prophets can't destroy the gospel of
Christ, then they want to corrupt the gospel in order to
lead people away from trusting Jesus Christ as their Lord
and Savior.
AUTHOR OF JUDE
VERSE 1 = This letter is written by me, Jude, brother of
James. I am a servant (or slave) of Jesus Christ. This letter
is for Christians, those who have been called by God.
Christians are loved by God and are kept by Jesus Christ.
WHO WAS JUDE IN THE BIBLE
a) Jude, the half brother of Jesus, is the author of this
book. He does not claim to be the half brother of Jesus,
perhaps because he doubted the deity of Christ until Christ
rose from the grave. You will never find Jude, or his
brother James, ever taking advantage of their family
relationship to the Lord (Mark 6:3) .
b) Imagine what James, Jude and their siblings must have
thought when they fully understood that their brother
Jesus was actually the Messiah sent from God.
7. c) They saw Jesus as a boy, playing with them and with
the other kids in the neighborhood. They saw Jesus with a
skinned knee, with a cold and with a runny nose. They
saw him as a teenager helping his father Joseph do
carpenter work. They saw Jesus grow into adulthood.
They saw him as he sat in the synagogue, listening intently
and observing everything in the worship service.
d) Jesus' brothers and sisters saw him as he began his
public ministry. Okay, he wanted to serve the Lord in a
ministry of his own. Nothing wrong with that. But Jesus as
the Messiah sent from God???? It must have been difficult
for Jesus' brothers and sisters to accept Jesus as the
Messiah.
e) Jude wrote this letter to Christians. It is not meant for
anyone else. It was probably written between AD 67 to
AD 80.
f) God calls Christians to be saints (Romans 1:7 and 1
Corinthians 1:2). In the Bible, the word "saint" means "to
be different from the world". Different in the way we live,
conduct our business and interact with people. We will
never be "perfect" but our lives should be different from
the lives of lost people.
VERSE 2 = May God give you more of his peace, love and
kindness.
8. GOSPEL OF CHRIST
VERSE 3 = My Christian brothers. I was going to write to
you about our salvation but, I have found it necessary to
write to you about false teachers who corrupt the gospel
of Christ and to encourage you to stand for the gospel of
Christ.
EXPLANATION
a) This is the reason Jude wrote his letter to believers. He
wants believers to oppose false teachings and to stand for
the gospel of Christ. This is just as relevant today as it was
in those days.
b) The terms false teachers and false prophets mean the
same thing.
***** BIBLE FALSE PROPHETS
VERSE 4 = False prophets have come into our churches and
have corrupted the gospel of Jesus Christ by saying that
we can live in sexual sin (fornication or homosexuality)
after we become Christians. They also teach that we do
not have to obey Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
They have denied our Lord Jesus Christ. Scripture
prophesied about these people long ago.
EXPLANATION
9. a) These false prophets corrupted the message of grace
by saying that since "the law was dead and we are now
under grace" we can live in immorality, we can live any
way we want. The apostle Paul corrects this false
teaching in Romans 6: 1 & 2.
b) These teachers also denied the deity of Christ. They
claimed that Jesus Christ is not God in human flesh.
ISRAEL IN THE WILDERNESS
VERSE 5 = I remind you, even though you know this, that
the Lord Jesus saved Israel out of Egypt but later he had to
allow the people to die in the desert without entering the
Promised Land because they did not trust and obey him.
EXPLANATION
a) The Lord brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt by using
incredible miracles. The Israelites were eyewitnesses to
the most incredible miracles ever performed in the history
of mankind.
b) The Israelites failed to trust and obey the Lord even
after all the miracles the Lord had done in their behalf.
c) As a result, Israel wandered in the desert wilderness for
40 years. Everyone over 20 years of age died in the
desert. (In the Bible, the number 40 represents a "time of
10. testing".)
ANGELS THAT SINNED
VERSE 6 = Remember the angels, at one time holy and
pure, who left their assigned positions for a life of sexual
sin. God has chained them in darkness, and they await
their fate on Judgement Day.
EXPLANATION
a) GENESIS 6: 1-7 It is believed that the union of these
angelic beings with human females produced physical
giants most of whom were very wicked.
b) Goliath ( the giant King David killed with a sling shot
and five smooth stones) may have been the result of one
of these unions.
SODOM AND GOMORRAH DESTROYED
VERSE 7 = Remember what happened to the people in
Sodom and Gomorrah? These people comitted acts of
gross sexuality immorality that were completely against
what God had intended. God destroyed these cities with
fire and brimstone. This is a warning to all people that
there is a hell where God punishes sinners. (Genesis 19: 1-
25)
EXPLANATION = Romans 1: 26-27 = (NIV BIBLE)
11. a) Verse 26 = Because of this, God gave them over to
shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural
sexual relations for unnatural ones.
b) Verse 27 = In the same way the men also abandoned
natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust
for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other
men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their
error.
c) Sin is sin, whether it is fornication, adultery,
homosexuality, theft, etc. However, God destroyed an
entire region because of their homosexual activities. You
won't hear the "politically correct" crowd approve this
teaching but this is straight out of the Bible.
VERSE 8 = These false teachers have dreams and visions
which encourage them to live in immorality. They reject
the authority of God and even despise and insult the
angels.
EXPLANATION = These men allow their dreams and visions
to override the specific instructions and guidance found in
the Word of God.
THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL
VERSE 9 = Consider the example of the archangel
Michael. He did not insult or condemn satan when they
12. were arguing over the body of Moses. The archangel
Michael merely replied, "the Lord rebuke you."
EXPLANATION
1) This information is only found in Jude. Where did Jude
obtain this information? The Holy Spirit revealed this to
Jude.
2) I believe that the Archangel Michael did not condemn
satan because he knew and understood how far satan had
fallen. (My opinion.)
VERSE 10 = These false teachers ridicule and corrupt the
Lord's teachings. Like animals, they follow their instincts
and do whatever they want, which eventully destroys
them.
*****CAIN KILLED ABEL
VERSE 11 = They are like Cain who killed Abel, his brother.
Like Balaam they pervert the Word of the Lord for
money. And, like Korah, they rebel against the the Lord.
The judgement of the Lord awaits them.
EXPLANATION
a) Genesis 4: 1-8 = Cain refused to offer the blood of an
animal as a sacrificial atonement for his sins (like his
brother Abel had done). Instead, Cain offered his own sin
13. offering unto God, which God rejected. Cain became
angry over God's rejection of his sin offering and in a
jealous rage, killed his brother Abel.
b) Numbers 22, 23, 24 and 25: 1-5 = Balaam used his
"ministry" to earn money. It is a sad truth that today,
most "Christian" churches are more concerned with
money and the blessings of God than they are the souls of
men. Most church services today are nothing more than
"religious entertainment". You rarely, if ever, hear a
sermon on the ***** Gospel of Jesus Christ.
c) Numbers 16: 1-35 = God chose Moses and Aaron to
lead Israel. There are no questions or doubts about this.
Korah wanted to lead Israel in place of Moses and Aaron.
VERSE 12 = When you have fellowship meals at church,
they laugh and stuff themselves with food and drink
without thinking of others who don't have as much food.
They are like rain clouds over a desert that never produce
rain. They are like fruit trees that never produce fruit.
They are like trees that have been uprooted and are only
good to be burned.
VERSE 13 = They are like the foam left on the beach by the
waves, dirty and useless. They appear to others as bright
and shining stars, but God knows them and has prepared
14. for them a place of darkness.
ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD, AND HE WAS NOT, FOR GOD
TOOK HIM. IMAGE FROM: http://www.WIKIPEDIA.ORG.
(Hope Enoch wasn't afraid of heights !!!!!)
ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD
VERSE 14 = Enoch, who was the seventh generation from
15. Adam, spoke this prophesy about these false teachers:
"The day is coming when the Lord will return with millions
of his holy angels".
EXPLANATION
a) This is another prophecy that is found nowhere else in
the Bible. The Holy Spirit must have revealed this to Jude.
This prophecy did not come from the book of Enoch.
b) Enoch was the father of Methuselah and the
grandfather of Noah. Enoch lived to the age of 365 years.
c) Enoch lived before Noah's flood, during a time of great
wickedness and evil amongst men. Yet he still was able to
remain faithful to the Lord.
d) Genesis 5:24 = "Enoch walked with God" and was then
taken up to heaven without experiencing physical death.
Enoch must have been a very godly man to have found
favor with God.
e) How did Enoch find favor with God? He found favor
with God by living for the Lord instead of himself, speaking
against the evil of his day, trusting the Lord and obeying
the Lord, even when things were not "going his way".
Understand that he did not have a Bible to guide him like
we do today.
16. f) Most people live for themselves but Enoch lived for the
Lord. Enoch pleased God by the way he lived. (Hebrews
11:5) .
g) Walking with God takes commitment and consistency
over time. Walking with God is not a "sprint", it is a
"marathon". A day by day, week by week, month by
month and year by year process.
h) 2 Kings 2: 11 = In the Old Covenant, Enoch and Elijah
were the only people who did not die but were
"translated" or taken directly into heaven. In the New
Covenant, an event will occur where Christians will be
translated into heaven without experienceing physical
death. This event is commonly referred to as the
"rapture" of the saints.
i) The day is coming when the Lord will return to planet
Earth with his angels to judge mankind.
j) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enoch_
%28ancestor_of_Noah%29 = click on this link for more
information on Enoch.
VERSE 15 = He will gather the people of this world. He
will then judge and punish everyone for their evil deeds
and for the words that they have spoken against him".
EXPLANATION
17. a) The day is coming when the Lord will return with his
angels and all who have been saved to judge the lost.
b) Verse 15 is the continuation of the prophecy made by
Enoch in Verse 14.
VERSE 16 = These false teachers do whatever evil things
they want to do. They complain and blame others when
things do not go well. They always promote themselves,
never respecting other people unless they want to receive
something from them.
SIGNS OF THE LAST DAYS
VERSE 17 = My brothers, do not forget what the apostles
of our Lord told us:
VERSE 18 = In the last days, before the coming of the
Lord, false prophets would appear in our congregations.
Their goal would be to fulfill their evil desires and to
undermine your faith in Christ.
VERSE 19 = These false prophets do not have the Holy
Spirit of the Lord. They are controlled by their evil desires
and often cause arguements and divisions in our churches.
EXPLANATION = Acts 20: 29-30 = the apostle Paul had
warned us about the coming of false prophets. One of the
signs of the Last Days is the abundance of false prophets in
18. our midst.
STRENGTHEN YOUR FAITH IN CHRIST
VERSE 20 = My brothers and sisters, learn to pray
according to the direction of the Holy Spirit. Continue to
strengthen your faith in Christ.
EXPLANATION
***** a) The best defense against the onslaught of Bible
false teachers is to stay close to the Lord. How is this
done? This is done by studying, learning and adhering to
the Word of God. Do not rely on the teachings of anyone.
Read and study the Bible for yourself. This is so important
in these Last Days that we are living in.
b) When you pray, ask the Lord for direction and guidance
on what you should pray for and for the things he wants
you to do.
VERSE 21 = Stay in the love of God as you wait for the
eternal life the Lord has given us.
EXPLANATION = Try not to let sin come between you and
God. Sin separates us from God. We are all human
beings and sooner or later, we will all stumble but we need
to live for the Lord as best as we can. Look forward to the
coming of Christ.
19. VERSE 22 = Help fellow believers who have doubts and
are wavering in their belief by strengthening their faith in
Christ. Be kind to those who argue against Christ by telling
them who Christ is.
EXPLANATION
a) These Bible false teachers have brought doubts to some
believers. We are to teach these believers what the Bible
teaches and not what these false teachers teach. We as
Christians must understand how God wants us to live and
we must do our best to live for God.
b) According to the Bible, Jesus Christ is God in human
flesh. Most people do not know or believe that Jesus
Christ is God in human flesh. We must tell people this.
VERSE 23 = Save some by snatching them as from the
very flames of hell itself. And as for others, help them to
find the Lord by being kind to them, but be careful that
you yourselves aren’t pulled along into their sins. Hate
every trace of their sin while being merciful to them as
sinners.
EXPLANATION = We can't make anyone go to heaven but
we can plant Gospel seeds in the lives of lost people. Tell
them about Christ but be careful not to follow them in
their sin.
20. VERSE 24 = And now all glory to him who alone is God,
who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Splendor,
majesty and all power and authority are his from the
beginning.
EXPLANATION
a) Only God the Father can save us through the finished
work of Jesus Christ his Son. We can do nothing to save
ourselves or to earn our salvation. We must trust Jesus
Christ to save us.
b) Also, no church can save us -- this is another false
teaching. You will not find any verse of scripture in the
Bible telling us to trust any church for our salvation. The
Baptist Church can't save you, the Pentecostal Church
can't save you and the Catholic Church can't save you.
Only Jesus Christ can save you and me.
VERSE 25 = And he is able to keep you from slipping and
falling away, and to bring you, sinless and perfect, into his
glorious presence with mighty shouts of everlasting joy.
Amen.
EXPLANATION
a) When we trust Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our
sins, we can come into the very presence of God, without
sin.
21. b) Since Jesus has paid the penalty for our sins, we will
never lose our salvation, as some false prophets teach.
CONCLUSION
a) The teachings of Jude are just as viable and true today,
as they were 2,000 years ago. Today, in these Last Days,
we are overwhelmed with false teachers who change and
corrupt the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
b) If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,
you cannot live in immorality. You and I cannot live in sin.
That is a false teaching. Jesus Christ paid a tremendous
price to save us from the penalty of sin. We belong to
Jesus, we do not belong to ourselves.
c) In this life, EVERY human being has a master. You
either serve Jesus Christ as your master or you serve satan
as your master. Choose well, for your choice has eternal
consequences. There are no second chances.
d) If Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, you will live for
him as best as you can.
e) In our day, the Gospel of Prosperity heresy may be
the best known of the false doctrines being promoted by
false teachers.
f) Christianity is not for wimps. It never has been and it
22. never will be. May God keep us and give us strength to
stay true to the Lord Jesus Christ.
