1. Little Blue Penguins
The little blue penguin is the smallest of all penguins growing to between 35-40cm and
weighing in at only 1kg.
These penguins live an average of 6-7years though have been know to live for more than
20 when in captivity.(In a zoo or place they are cared for)
They can be found all around the coast of NZ,the southern coast of Australia,as well as
surrounding island.
Blue coats and white bellies camouflage for swimming in the ocean.
Little blues race through water at speeds of 6km per hour. Spend their days swimming the
oceans, eating fish, squid and crustaceans. Rats, cats, ferrets, stoats, weasels and dogs are
predators to the little blue penguin.
Why are they endangered?
Killed by cars crossing roads to get to
burrows.
People deliberately light fires, oil spills at sea, plastic pollution-hazard entanglement and
infection (eating) over fishing (people taking penguin food sources such as pilchards and
anchovies).
What could be done to help?
We can help the little blue penguins to survive. We can stop catching their food, help the
little blue penguins and kill their predators.
