Evaluation question 3 – what kind of media
1. Evaluation Question 3 – What
kind of media institution might
distribute your media product
and why?
2. Where could your media product be
distributed?
• Our media product could be
distributed in a number of
different institutions. These
could include cinemas, film or
music festivals, on television
for advertisement. Due to the
fact that our audience is young
people, they will use more
modern ways of watching
films, such as on Netflix, Now
TV, streaming on sites such as
put locker and 123 movies.
•
• The cinema and streaming
online would more than likely
be the best way to have our
product distributed and both
would reach a wide audience.
3. What is on at the local Odeon?
– Guildford
The main genres that are currently being shown in
the local Odeon is action and adventure films,
closely followed by fantasy based films. These are
the genres that are more in demand than other
genres, surprisingly not one of the films currently
being shown is a psychological thriller. Our opening
sequence is a psychological thriller, this shows us
that there is not a audience for this genre in the
Odeon at this moment in time, also suggesting that
our film would not do very well in the Odeon as
there would be no one to watch it. This tells us that
the audience for the Guildford Odeon is those that
like action packed adventure films and those that
like the more fantasy based films, showing us a
producer of a media production that our film may
not do very well at the Guildford Odeon as it is not
of these genres meaning we would have to find
another institution where we can show our film.
4. Woking Ambassadors Cinema film
showing compared with Guildford
Odeon… • Some of the films that are being shown in the Woking cinema and some
are different and carry different genres to those at the Guildford
Odeon, including family and animation films. However the over all
genres of the Woking cinema are similar to those at the Guildford
Odeon. The Woking cinemas most popular genre is drama based
films where films such as Passengers, Silence and Construal beauty
are being shown. This suggests to us that similar to Guildford Odeon,
the audience for our genre film is not there so we would be unable
to reach a high rating of audience members from this institution
meaning that we would need to film else where to show our media
product as it would not make much money at either cinema. The
difference is genres for the two cinemas may be due to the fact that
the Woking cinema is a lot bigger than the Guildford cinema so can
show a wider range of films that could be of different genre. Due to
the fact that the Guildford cinema is Odeon and Woking is
Ambassadors they may have different contracts with different film
companies meaning they will show a different variety of films and
genres due to the contracts they have with the different production
companies.
5. Independent Cinema – BFI
• BFI cinema is the UK’s leading repertory cinema. They
specialise in seasons of classic, independent and
non-English language films and is operated by the
British Film Institute. The genres of films that BFI
are currently showing are a mixture of classic
musicales, comic dramas and period dramas. These
genres are completely different from the genre of
our media production, this means that if we were
to show our film at this institution it probably
wouldn’t do very well as the type of audience that
BFI attract is different to that of a psychological
thrillers audience. The most common genre being
shown at BFI at the moment is period dramas,
telling us that the audience that the company are
attracting at this point in time is that who like
period drams and those who are interested in
history.
6. Independent Cinema – Reading film
Theatre
The different genres that are shown at the Reading film Theatre are period and
historical dramas, real life events and adventure films, they also show a wide range of
films from around the world. The most shown genre at the reading film theatre is
adventure and historical based films. This means that the audience for this particular
institution will be similar to that of BFI due to them showing similar genre films. Our
media product is a psychological thriller so would not fit in with the style of film that the
institution is showing at this moment in time due to the genre being completely
different. This may change over time however depending on the demand for the genre.
7. What does this tell you about the audiences
that are attracted to independent cinemas
compared to the Odeon?
• This tells us that the audiences for independent cinemas are more
interested in films based on real life events and that have something
to do with the historical events. This is different from the audiences
that are going to The Odeon . This may be because BFI and the
reading film theatre can appeal to a wider range of audience due to
the different range in the genres that they show and also because
they show different genres of films that you wouldn’t usually see in
a Odeon or Ambassadors cinema. The Genres are different to the
everyday genres that we experience in a everyday local cinema such
as the Odeon or the ambassadors cinemas, this allows people to
experience a different genre film that they wouldn’t usually be able
to see if they went to the local cinema.
