in Ensuring Student Achievement
Presented by Tammy Westrick
October 6-7, 2012
Hosted by International School Bangkok, Thailand
Workshop Description and Outcomes:
Conferring is one of the best ways to identify student strengths and areas of concern.
It allows us to differentiate our instruction and really target those skills and
strategies students need to be successful writers. This workshop will be directed at
conferring in writing. However, you will naturally be able to apply most skills and
strategies to other contexts, as well.
Intended Audience:
• Elementary Teachers K-5
• Instructional/Learning Coaches
• Support Teachers (Special Education/ESL)
• Administrators
Participants of this workshop will:
• Revisit the architecture of a conference and explore different conferring
organizational structures
• Explore the benefits of individual and small group conferences
• Learn how to move beyond using generic prompts by building writing content
knowledge in the genre being taught
• Consider ways to use of a variety of mentor texts in your conferences
• Analyze conferring data to determine next instructional steps
• Consider conferring notes as one piece of a body of evidence
