4. October 7, 2009FPL prepares to power up nation's largest solar PV power plant facility this month The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center's 90,000 photovoltaic panels will energize Florida by end of October JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company announced today that it expects the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia, Fla., to begin delivering electricity to customers later this month – ahead of schedule. The facility will overtake Nevada’s Nellis Solar Power Plant for the title of largest solar photovoltaic solar facility in the nation and in North America. Constructed in less than a year, the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center uses over 90,000 photovoltaic panels to turn the sun's rays into electricity to power more than 3,000 homes.
5. Florida Will the Second Largest Solar Power in the Country The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center is one of three new commercial-scale, renewable, solar power plants FPL is building in Florida, along with solar energy centers in Martin County and at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Together, these will total 110 megawatts of capacity by the end of 2010 and are expected to make Florida the second largest solar power-producing state in the country.
6. Solar photovoltaic power also provides significant environmental benefits because the facility consumes no fuel, uses no water and produces no waste. Over the life of the facility, the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center will avoid the release of more than 575,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to taking more than 4,500 cars off the road every year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, the electricity generated by this facility will reduce the use of fossil fuels in Florida by more than 277,000 barrels of oil and 7 billion cubic feet of natural gas. 277,000 * 73/barrel = 20,221,000 Million Dollar Reduction in Fossil Fuel Usage

12. Electricity Monitoring at Home Saves Energy on Gadget Use The big lesson they've learned from this energy monitoring exercise is that measuring the household electricity usage, and the awareness it produces, "typically results in an almost immediate 15% reduction in use." That's a significant amount, considering that it centers solely on the awareness of the energy usage, not on giving up any of the creature comforts we're used to.

14. World's Biggest Photovoltaic Projectsfor Florida One of the world's biggest photovoltaic projects is planned for southwest Florida. Florida Power & Light will spend $350 million to build a 75-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant at a planned city, Babcock Ranch, near Fort Myers, the company announced Thursday. Construction could begin late this year, subject to state regulatory approvals. Eric Silagy, the ultility's chief development officer, said at a press conference that the company's photovoltaic project is larger than any previously announced.
15. World First Solar City The developers, Kitson & Partners, hope that Babcock Ranch will be the world's first city to get all its energy from renewable solar energy. "The FPL solar plant will be inside Babcock Ranch. Along with solar panels on the roofs of buildings citywide, it will be a revolutionary leap forward in clean energy for an urban area," said SydKitson, CEO of Kitson & Partners, in a statement. 18. Gulf Power Offering Financial Incentives for Saving Energy The utility, which serves more than 425,000 customers in Northwest Florida, is offering incentives for customers to install solar thermal water heaters, with a finance program and state and company rebates. Customers will also be eligible for a federal income tax credit of $1,200 and save an average of $240 yearly in energy costs. The program will also give customers free compact fluorescent bulbs for completing an energy audit. Other EarthCents programs include free energy surveys, energy efficiency programs for homebuilders and public education on energy conservation.
19. Gulf Power believes the EarthCents program will postpone the need for building new peaking power plants in the future as Florida continues to grow. "EarthCents is one of the most comprehensive programs we've asked the FPSC to approve in years," said Lynn Erickson, corporate communications for Gulf Power. Gulf Power's EarthCents' announcement comes less than a week after the utility announced that it is asking the Florida Public Service Commission to approve an increase in electricity prices to cover a $76 million shortfall in 2008 revenues. The increase would raise the cost of 1,000 kilowatt hours from $102.22 to $113.76 and compensate the rising cost of coal and natural gas, the two fuel sources used by Gulf Power for electricity, spokesman John Hutchinson said.
